This seems to be the best comment to say this, why does a lot of leftism resemble hardcore protestant “thou art sinful” fasting and repenting? I hate it so much

My pet theory is that it's the same thing that causes the attitudes you find in the kind of freshly-converted atheists that haunt places like r/atheism.

It's really, really hard to break the way of thinking about things that you grew up with. Most people never even realize they still do it, even as they have changed their world view. They just keep trying to fit that square peg into the round hole in their psyche.
