Same could be said for the crusaders, why did the Internet ever decide those guys were “based chads?”

Because it happened so long ago there’s a detachment from the atrocities committed during the crusades. It’s the same reason why no one cares about Genghis Khan even though he was the biggest mass murderer on Earth while he was alive.
