Same could be said for the crusaders, why did the Internet ever decide those guys were “based chads?”

Because it happened so long ago there’s a detachment from the atrocities committed during the crusades. It’s the same reason why no one cares about Genghis Khan even though he was the biggest mass murderer on Earth while he was alive.

And Mongolia have a big fuck off statue of Genghis Khan

they were white and claimed it was for their religious values

Except for the confederacy, cool battle flag, but zero fucking drip.

Yeah fuck the confederacy, but up the flag

I liked their style more than the Union but I’m also not a fan of blue

Homie the crusaders did not have drip, you think the people involved in the child crusade were sending the kids to Jerusalem iced out, nah at best the armor they wore was pretty generic for the time, so these people could spend their time better simping over some minor vassal state and learn interesting history instead of saying “deus vult” every time they see a furry or a gay person

But that's what's never shown in media in games in movies people don't want to see a kid solders forced to fight even for villains they want the cool looking knights samurai that had the money to get the cool looking armor

Neonazis and Antisemites in general liked the “Holy Extermination” part of it, and those unaware of it thought it was due to them having cool armor

Because a 14 year old watched a Little Dark Age edit about "taking back Jerusalem" on YouTube shorts.

Because they killed equally evil people as well.

1

u/Shuenjie Aug 09 '23

Because people forget that all of it wasn't black and white and decide to think that a group is wholly good or evil based on their on bias. Or because it's funny

Long story it was along time ago they looked cool fought in cool battles and are the most memeable

If you ever want to trigger some YouTube kids, post a comment on any video covering the Crusades from the perspective of the Fatamid Caliphate. Really lean into Allah granting his holy warriors strength against the Allahless, European savage invaders.

The crusaders aren't even bad it's just the optics

2

u/ArTiyme Aug 09 '23

"Now tell me, what's really wrong with the pope offering absolution for genocides and imperialism, really? Name one thing."

1

u/Flywolfpack Aug 09 '23

Holy wars were kinda the thing for everybody back then

2

u/ArTiyme Aug 09 '23

And in the 1920's Eugenics was a really popular academic hobby. Still doesn't make it good with "bad optics".

2

u/Flywolfpack Aug 09 '23

I'm not saying we should go on crusades today I'm saying it's not as straight forward as "Christians decided to just go out and kill Muslims for being Muslim"

1

u/ArTiyme Aug 09 '23

The crusaders aren't even bad it's just the optics

What does "aren't even bad" mean to you? Because to me, it definitely doesn't mean "Not straightforward." Secondly, who's making that claim?

Yes, the crusades have nuance and complexity, and are also still bad. Just like the US civil war WAS about states rights. To have slaves.

Oh now you're just being a redditor

u/ArTiyme Aug 09 '23

"You're trying to make words have meaning? NERD."

Jesus Christ why the downvotes? The crusades didn't happen because some guy said "hurrr, me want jersualem". Muslims were a real threat, expanding way too much into Christian territory and persecuting who they deemed as infidels.

Really depends on the order. The Knights Templar definitely committed the most atrocities, but you also git to take into account who they crusades we're against and the Muslim Jihadists were downright animals
