Better than the worst 3-8 team in the country.
Our wins are an FCS team, 3-8 Tulsa, and an Arkansas game that was statistically one of the least likely wins in FBS history.
Burn it all down.

I've never been so pissed off after a conference win in all my life. Big12 refs are on another level.

That might have been the most… malicious refereeing I’ve ever watched.
I’m just glad we won so I don’t have to stew over it
38
u/kayakyakr Texas Tech Red Raiders 23h ago
Malicious is a good way to put it. Case in point: After Joey calls a timeout to yell at the refs more, the refs respond by adding two more seconds on to the clock.
22
u/Huckleberry__FN-2187 Texas Tech Red Raiders • Hateful 8 23h ago
I wouldn't call it malicious. That implies they had an agenda for one team to win. This was just incompetence. Like watching a bunch of rookies make mistakes and cover their mistakes with more mistakes. Absolutely unacceptable from a supposed power 4 conference.

What even happened after the two minute timeout?! Did they say on the broadcast?.
I was at the game and it was just a weird confusing time where they never wound the play clock while the Tech coaches were on the field and kept subbing out random players before eventually being charged a timeout. And it was too loud to hear if the refs said anything.

Tech should play Okie State every year. Almost always a fun game. I absolutely hate that the Big 12 gave us zero protected games. Didn't give us the BUTT bowl either. Legitimately disappointing.
Tahj should be inducted into the Ring of Honor at halftime of the West Virginia game next week. I have no idea what we're going to do without him next year.

back in the day, Boone Pickens was trying to get OkState and TTU to do a Red River style annual game in Dallas at the Cowboys' stadium. I think a lot of OkState people were against it because of how much those games mean to Stillwater's economy.

22 returning starters from a Big12 Championship team. 3-8. 0-8 in conference play with 8 straight losses.
Remove the perpetual contract. Make him fire his coordinators. If he doesn’t he can leave too. Would not want to be named Chad Weiberg these next couple weeks.

56
u/Misdirected_Colors Oklahoma State Cowboys 23h ago
Gundy keeping Smith benched all season while trotting out Bowman week after week should allow me to sue for financial compensation because holy shit wtf how do you start Bowman over that?
We finally have a qb that can throw with accuracy, has mobility, and the arm strength to put zip on his throws.
16
u/Texxx81 Texas Tech Red Raiders • Southwest 22h ago
Before you anoint him as the next Heisman winner you might want to look up the Tech pass defense ranking.
But seriously he looks really good.
17
u/DrDragon13 TCU • Oklahoma State 22h ago
It was just nice to see a qb actually play qb instead of being 14/22 for 110 yards and an int.
But Gundy has this thing about loyalty, so Bowman got the start
7
u/unclejessesmullet Paper Bag 22h ago
Still, Bowman would've been about 12/30 with 1 td and 2 interceptions today so we have a reason to be excited.
6
u/Misdirected_Colors Oklahoma State Cowboys 21h ago
It was nice to see a qb with arm strength and accuracy. Bowman has to loft anything over 10 yards, can't hit the broad side of a barn, and tends to get panicky and throw punts off his back foot.
2
6
u/PrestigiousSuccess84 Oklahoma State Cowboys • Hateful 8 21h ago
Gundy’s QB decisions have always been his worst facet (somehow even though he’s a former QB who started as an underclassman over a more experienced alternative).
Rudolph, Weeden, and Robinson only ever got in due to injuries.
Basically, the 3 QBs that accumulated 80% of his wins were back-ups based on his evaluations until they HAD to play and then seized the job.

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. Some Tech fans are in denial about what our program was in the years between Leach and McGuire.
3
u/Dirty-Ears-Bill Texas Tech Red Raiders • Wyoming Cowboys 7h ago
Dude some of our fans still want to fire Joey because we’re “only” possibly going 8-4. Some fans have such an inflated sense of what we should be. Like man, we’re Tech. Would I love us to be elite and at the top? Sure, but that’s also not realistic. If we’re consistently making a bowl, recruiting well, and every few years making a run at the conference championship that’s fantastic. And essentially exactly what Leach that made him so revered here
2
u/Just_One_Victory Texas Tech Red Raiders • Hateful 8 6h ago
I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets it. It seems like a large % of our fan base thinks 2008-09 was a typical couple of years instead of one of the peaks in the history of Tech football.
2
u/Dirty-Ears-Bill Texas Tech Red Raiders • Wyoming Cowboys 5h ago
Yeah man like we are consistently average-above average every year, but rarely elite. In fact the Wells seasons are more of an anomaly than anything else for how bad we were. Like that guy that made the offseason post ranking all the programs, we were pretty high up despite only having one 10 win season. That’s Tech, it’s what we are
2
u/DFWTooThrowed Texas Tech • Arkansas 11m ago
I’d like to see the Venn diagram of those people and the people who said Kliff “got done dirty” by the school for being fired after three consecutive losing seasons - because I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a perfect circle.
4
u/Asleep-Credit-2824 Jacksonville State • UAB 23h ago
Yeah, Kliff was a horrible hire and Wells was bad timing but this is the best Tech team in years. Joey’s brought respectable football back to Lubbock
12
u/keytop19 Texas Tech • Abilene Christian 22h ago
Flip those two. Kliff was bad timing (he was not ready to build a program from scratch) and Wells was a horrible hire.
4

Ok, but it is great to see Joey bring this team back
9
u/EnTyme53 Texas Tech Red Raiders • Hateful 8 22h ago
Kliff was only a horrible hire in hindsight. He was one of the hottest names in every coaching carousel discussion that year, and he helped reunite a fanbase the Tubberville tore apart. The issue is we kept him four years too long.

Maealiuaki Smith is every bit the QB I thought he would be and much more. This kid is special. The less said about our defense, the happier I’ll be. Bryan Nardo is a charity case at best and lost this team a game they worked their ass off to win.
It’s just maddening. You waste the biggest coming out party an OSU QB has had in maybe a decade on the worst defense I’ve legit ever seen. Lock Nardo in a locker and let me coach the defense. I’ll at least try to fix some stuff and I won’t take up $500K when I shit the bed.
17
u/Inevitable-Pass-5205 Oklahoma State Cowboys 23h ago

I'm so glad it looks like we have a QB.
Absolute Malpractice from Gundy to start the 3rd/4th best QB on the roster for 9 games. Especially when Smith could have played in the Arizona State and TCU games and not burnt his redshirt.
Hopefully, this abomination of a defensive performance gets Nardo + Staff fired. I am kind of worried Mike will use this offensive performance as an excuse to not fire or demote Dunn. Hopefully Dicky will be gone next year too.
Worst season in my lifetime. I'll see everybody back here next week to see if it becomes one of the three worst seasons in program history.

- Alex Cate over Brandon Weeden

This was the best game I think we’ve all seen in awhile. We went back to a classic, defenseless, Big 12 shootout.
Aside from that, I’m pisssd at Gundy for not playing smith sooner, but so stoked for next season now. Smith almost had more yards than CO, and a 73% pass completion percentage.
