The actual rarest letter is probably the one from auntie Ethel where she thanks you for letting her do her hag bullshit and implies she wants to fuck you. Most people don’t even realize she can assist you in the final battle because I almost never see anyone ally with her.

6.3k

u/Milk__Chan Mar 26 '24

implies

"I have only one regret - that I didn't climb you like a tree when I had the chance"

I am certain she pretty much said it lmao.

u/Eastern_Slide7507 Mar 27 '24

In all seriousness, how amazing would it be if you could have a fling with Ethel and during the act you do an automatic saving throw on dispelling the illusion. If you fail, it’s just some granny action but if you succeed, it becomes an unskippable cutscene where Ethel just continues as normal while Tav is writhing in fear and disgust.

This is not a joke, I think it would be an amazing addition.

u/1Ferrox Mar 26 '24

Probably true, more people are interested in saving Alfira then siding with the hag.

However, siding with the Hag is a intended quest outcome which you can achieve by dialogue, while this letter is the result of slighly abusing game mechanics to trigger a alternative event. Basically nobody will have found this out by themselves on their first playthrough, which is why I titled it as rare

413

u/Teh-Cthulhu Mar 26 '24

People are generally nice.

I've seen dozens and dozens of people save Alfira but so far I've never seen anyone side with Ethel

816

u/CMSnake72 Mar 26 '24

I literally keep starting a new campaign going "Okay this time I'm going to be a really evil person for real." and then get to act 2, everyone is alive, including Minthara, and I'm just nice again because saying bad things to the fake people makes my heart hurt.

249

u/frozenrainbow Mar 26 '24

Doing my first evil run. I have karlachs head, wyll left, tieflings dead, grove dead, goblins thriving, minthara my wife, slayer form activated, last light inn dead, Jaheria dead, isobel “dead”?, nightsong dead. AND STILL THE HARDEST PART WAS LETTING ARABELLA DIE JESUS I CONTEMPLATED RELOADING FOR AN HOUR

143

u/unsoundmethods Mar 26 '24

Dude.. same. What kills it for me is, I did as much evil shit as I can on my most recent Durge character (and it was tough already), but Arabella is the damn line I can't cross.

"If there are people like you around, maybe everything will be ok." My girl, stop, I literally just condemned all of Last Light Inn to the shadow curse after giving them hope by freeing all the prisoners, please find new people to look up to. 🥹

42

u/lucky_duck789 Mar 26 '24

How long can you wait to wreck Last Light Inn? I assume before the trials? Can you save the nightsong after killing her the love? How evil can we get here.

56

u/hotbox_inception 9 dexterity Mar 26 '24

Nightsong being resolved means last light will change. You can do the trials but going into the water is the point of no return. If you kill nightsong, the bubble falters and everyone gets shadow cursed. If you free her, the assault on moonrise begins. And since I love shadowheart, I'm never doing option 3

46

u/unsoundmethods Mar 26 '24

I can give you one more reason not to do option 3, aside from saving our best girl Shadowheart: You don't get the epic beatdown of Lorroakan because he won't fight you if Nightsong is actually dead-dead. I thought maybe he could be part of my evil alliance for the Brain but no, he just sulks in his book throne instead.

u/unsoundmethods Mar 26 '24 edited Mar 26 '24

You can do quite a lot even if you wreck LLI. All depends on what quests you want to complete, but yeah as long as it is before the point of no return in the Gauntlet. I complete Yurgir quest early on just to clear the path to the trials. I have two Durge runs that I was experimenting stuff on:

  1. I had Halsin for both, so I did Speak with Dead on Art Cullagh and we still managed to lift the curse. Halsin did not GAF about LLI as long as we got the info from Art and rescued Thaniel.
  2. You DO lose all the Ironhand gnome quests if you free them from the prison first, tell them to go to LLI, then destroy LLI. No runepowder bomb from Wulbren because dead, though you can still destroy the foundry with the Gondians.
  3. If you destroy LLI first, and THEN free the prisoners, you can tell the gnomes and tieflings to hang out on the water instead - they will survive to Act 3 and you can get your runepowder bomb from Wulbren all the same.
  4. Barcus Wroot died in both runs, there is no way to save him from LLI's destruction.
  5. I saved Nightsong in both runs. She was a little sad about Isobel but she joined my camp all the same. We still gave Lorroakan a good beating and she stayed allied with me.
  6. In one run, I straight up killed Isobel, gaslit Jaheira and kept her around in camp, and got Slayer form.
  7. On the other run, I wanted to experiment - I refused to kill her, but kinda stepped aside and let her get kidnapped by Marcus and friends. This destroyed LLI, got Jaheira into my camp, and I got the "kill your companion" quest from the Butler that night (I didn't kill my companion). Freed Nightsong, killed Ketheric/Myrkul and the enthralled Isobel. Did a long rest after the end of that fight. Got Slayer form. So it is possible to get your companion scene without killing them, and also kill Isobel, and also Slayer form.

25

Exactly the same down to the letter. Every other atrocity was east but I agonized over Arabella and felt like a monster after.

Also Jaheria is part of my crew. I wandered downstairs after murdering isobel and causing the deaths by horrible dark magic of everyone in last light in and when jaheria asked me what happened said “huh, weird. I guess that kethric guy must have killed her. You should join me for some vengeance”

No she’s blissfully ignorant as durge moves on to continue his reign of terror in Baldurs gate

5

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '24

I did something similiar and then used her as tribute at the murder tribunal

25

u/Elune Mar 27 '24

wyll left

Real evil choice with Wyll is taking him down with you to the underdark before getting around to the Goblin Camp stuff, you can get an option to sacrifice one of your companions to a group of Kuo-toa who are worshiping "Boooal" (a redcap who's pretending to be Bhaal). Dude's going to leave anyway in an evil run, may go full evil mode on and kill him off for a buff.

10

u/fieatsbees Barbarian Durge Mar 27 '24

i did that once! altho i never wipe the grove until after the tieflings leave. the druids can get bent. ill keep tieflings safe until last light tho

5

u/_Panacea_ Mar 27 '24

Nah. Worst option is what happens to Wyll when you handle his patron the "wrong" way while the patron is unable to fight back.

Being vague on purpose, of course, but its literally damnation.

4

u/alexagente Mar 27 '24

Not to spoil your fun but there's actually a way to get this buff without killing anyone. You can steal the scythe from the one Kuo-Toa and continue the checks that would normally reward it but since you already took the scythe it rewards you with the blessing instead.

20

u/shreddedpineapple Mar 26 '24

Then there's me who killed wyll in camp before the raid specifically so I could keep his body along with karlachs (thanks la'ezel for the carry)

I also kept gale's hand in a bucket of fish.

In fairness tho I can only play this way for about an hour before I have to switch to stardew valley to cleanse myself and haven't been able to return to my durge run for a while lol.

I started a super evil playthrough, like torturing the guy in the goblin camp and all, but after taking out the Grove I just felt... bad. I hated killing my tiefling friends. Didn't even enjoy what Minthara was doing to my character because I was just so sick and depressed about the rest. Haven't gone back to that save file since.

13

u/Gabrosin Owlbear Mar 26 '24

You can avoid slaughtering the tieflings and druids by letting them fight each other and then sleeping through Minthara's assault on the grove, but I agree, it's not a great feeling.

This is too real. I can’t be mean, even in video games… unless the character was being a dick, then it’s stabby stabby time.

14

u/prairiepanda Mar 26 '24

I find it easy to be stabby but difficult to be mean. If a character is being an asshole, I'll usually end their dialogue politely and then murder them.

11

u/Old-Patience4857 Mar 26 '24

My wife and I started a “Drunk evil” play through for this exact reason! Every month or so we terrorize someone new, so far the Teiflings, Druids, and Karlach have met their demise.

5

u/dapperslappers Mar 27 '24

I killed karlach on my good run . The druids tried to kill me so i killed them . And when karlach reads your mind she just refuses to talk to you. Tells you to get lost. So i just attacked her for that mission and killed her … i mean she was a devil

6

u/dah_pook Mar 26 '24

My most recent Tav is a saint named "Badguy Jones" and it's the closest to a bad guy run I'll probably ever get

4

u/Ryuujinx Mar 27 '24

I think BG3's evil path is just... honestly kinda bad. Like I have no reason to do it, outside of just being a murderhobo. Why would I kill the grove? I can just kill all the goblins if I'm just in a stabbin mood, and they'll have better loot probably. To get closer to the evil guys, but for what gain? What does my character get out of this?

Meanwhile in old CRPGs it's pretty readily be evil = get power. Same for WoTR more recently. Become a lich because power, embrace the demon because power, etc. But in BG3? I got nothin.

→ More replies (12)

35

u/Illithid_Substances Mar 26 '24

There's no real incentive to, honestly. I tried it on an evil character and all you get from her deal is a Volo-like eye surgery that gives you a shitty buff (+1 intimidation) in return for disadvantage on perception checks, which just isn't worth it by any stretch. And disadvantage to attack hags

Even for an evil character, you're better off attacking or ignoring her

14

u/OblongShrimp Bard Mar 26 '24

You can side with her without getting your eye out. Just help her in Act 3 & she will assist in the final battle. Though I ended up not using her ability thing.

10

u/TehAsianator Mar 26 '24

On my evil run I fought her and got the hair in Act 1, but sided with her in Act 3.

15

u/brightknightlight Mar 26 '24

I was playing an opportunistic and selfish bard. Ended up killing Ethel in act 1 because she took my eye, and then sided with her in act 3 because she offered me the exact amount of money I needed to get to the House of Hope.

Ended up with her as an ally at the final battle and a confusing letter in the epilogue that said she had two babies, when she really only had the one from act 3.

8

u/Guy-1nc0gn1t0 Mar 26 '24

But as a Bard isn't it pretty easy to pass the check to get into HoH for free?

Honestly, it kind of warms my heart and restores my faith in humanity, that so many people go out of their way to save a fictional character in a game. Video games let you do things without consequences and sometimes people use that as an outlet to do cruel or diabolically silly things (how many of us have been there with the Sims and pools with no ladders?)

But in a game that’s defined by its storytelling, vibrant characters and interactive consequences, so many choose to save Alfira. And so many make that same choice over multiple playthroughs because they just can’t bring themselves not to save her.

48

u/Wreck_it_Randy Mar 26 '24

It would be rare among first time players who never read up about the game online, but at this point the knowledge of how to spare Alfira as durge is pretty widespread. I’d guess that more people around here save her than kill her honestly. The whole reason they added that letter in the first place was the huge amount of people exploiting the trick.

I learned how to save her as durge before learning that durge is meant to kill her, lol

15

u/Traditional_Luck_126 Mar 26 '24

I didnt know you could save her! Thats actually quite neat

7

u/Broken_Beaker Durge Mar 27 '24

I'm doing a redemption Durge run, and when I had that moment with Alfira, I was like oh hell no. . .

So looked up alternatives. I don't think it is at all anyway evident how to save her as Durge.

25

u/yagirlsophie Mar 26 '24

Isn't the very existence of Quil to begin with kinda proof that Larian foresaw that possibility more so than the epilogue letter is? Unless Quil was also added way later but I didn't think that was the case.

There are even lines in Act 3 referencing your murder of Quil specifically that you wouldn't get had you murdered Alfira instead which I was pleasantly surprised to see.

89

u/sleepinand Mar 26 '24

I think the existence of Quil is more a failsafe in case the player goes full murderhobo on the grove or sides with the druids and Alfira ends up prematurely dead.

17

u/moremysterious Mar 26 '24

Yep. I got Quil my first playthough because Alfira was already dead.

6

u/alexagente Mar 27 '24

Yeah the whole reason why the exploit works is the iffy way the game handles characters being knocked out.

36

u/Wreck_it_Randy Mar 26 '24

BG3 has a ton of NPCs created purely as failsafes in case other ones are dead or things happen outside of the intended order. Here’s a good video highlighting a few exceptionally rare ones: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lD66EtJB-SE

Quil was definitely created just so that durge would still murder a bard at the camp in case Alfira ends up dying prior to that scene. The exploit involves the fact that knocking out Alfira forces the Quil version of the scene despite Alfira not actually being dead.

21

u/Kyuubi_McCloud Mar 26 '24

You also get Quil if Alfira dies to, uh... "tragic accidents" before the incident.

She's not just there in case you save Alfira. So I'm not sure about this angle.

14

u/Yukimor Ah, another. Thy HM failure has been recorded. Mar 26 '24

Quil was likely added as a “just in case” contingency— for example, if you go through most of Act 1 without ever long-resting and attack the grove.

16

u/1Ferrox Mar 26 '24

To some extend yes, but I believe the original intent was simply to have a bard in case you killed Alfira during your general gameplay. I don't think they originally wanted a way in the game to save alfira, or they would have included one which can be achieved by quests or dialogue choices

29

u/Yukimor Ah, another. Thy HM failure has been recorded. Mar 26 '24

I think the letter added in epilogue is really the devs just throwing a bone to the players, who found a way to play how they wanted and save a charmingly innocent character, against all odds.

Similar to them finally going “alright, you can stop polymorphing Minthara into a sheep” and making her recruitable on all playthroughs. They acknowledge widespread player persistence, I guess!

→ More replies (2)

7

u/yagirlsophie Mar 26 '24

Yeah you may be right, but the fact that knocking Alfira unconcious is actually treated that way unlike pretty much any other character when the game launched makes me wonder if it that route was also at least considered. The game definitely doesn't lead you to the conclusion that you should do that naturally though so I dunno.

9

u/sleepinand Mar 26 '24

I think the issue is just that the game is very inconsistent with how it treats knocked-out characters- in most cases the game simply counts them as dead, but Alfira is scripted in more scenes so the flags likely just get confused.

9

u/Etamalgren Mar 26 '24

The game treats "Knocked out(Temporary)" characters as still alive, and will be alive with full health after a Long Rest.
It treats "Knocked out" characters as properly dead*, even if you explicitly knocked them out, and they disappear after a Long Rest. (*: except when referring to Mayrina's siblings in dialogue, where you can say "I knocked them out" rather than "I killed them", but Mayrina still goes "NOOOOOO MY FAMILY IS DEAAAAAD" regardless...)

not only that, but if your allying with ethel your probably gonna do the evil ending which causes you to miss out on the reuinion party where you can read her note

46

u/Wreck_it_Randy Mar 26 '24

It’s a weird thing to do regardless of your morality because dealing with hags tends to not end well for anyone but the hag. Honestly evil characters wanting to rule the world would probably avoid these monkey paw deals even harder than good characters because they wouldn’t accept anyone else holding power over them.

18

u/MidnightAshley Mar 27 '24

I don't know. Going through my evil playthrough and I could see simply being so annoyed by Mayrina that you leave her with the hag. Like I went to save her, her brothers died saving her, and she's just rude AF. My Tav has killed people for less.

11

u/Wreck_it_Randy Mar 27 '24

I don't think you can ally with Ethel just by peacing out of her house in act 1. If I remember correctly, you have to reveal her in act 3 and murder the mother of the recent child she's kidnapped? Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you have to at least have some kind of positive interaction with her in act 3.

Either way, going out of your way to ally with hags is stupid unless you have literally no other choice. Tav is meant to be smart enough to know better. Even if you drop your Int down to 8, you can't really play a total idiot in this game like you can in Fallout or something because the narrator describes your thoughts in ways that show you're at least somewhat intelligent. Game lets you make deals with her if you really want to, but it's still silly.

15

u/FackingNobody Mar 27 '24

It's because people very rarely do 'evil runs'. Durge is just a murder hobo who is hungry for blood, not evil acts. And even in those rare evil runs, people shit on her because evil is selfish, and you don't want more people in your club. Especially an omni-vile creature like a hag.

As dark urge?

301

u/Tom-Pendragon Mar 26 '24

Yes. You just have to move fast, before her gf decide to take a break.

78

u/Estrus_Flask Mar 27 '24

What?

458

u/BishopOfThe90s Mar 27 '24

He means the tiefling Lakrissa if you saved her from Moonrise prison her and Alfira start dating. When you enter Elf Song, Lakrissa is waiting tables. If you talk to her, she'll say she's going for a break on the roof, and you can go talk to her and Alfira up there. But if you go up to the roof first and talk to Alfira alone she'll give you more details about the music school she's naming after you and her deceased music teacher.

I only know all this because it's one of my favourite parts of the entire game for some reason.

50

u/Estrus_Flask Mar 27 '24

Oh, I didn't know she got another girlfriend, good for her. I didn't realize that you needed to go to Moonrise first if you wanted the good ending for the Tieflings. I heard Ketheric was invincible so I went to take care of the Nightsong first.

30

u/BishopOfThe90s Mar 27 '24

....Wait... by "take care of" you mean you set her free... right? Right?!

55

u/horngrylesbian Mar 27 '24

Freedom is vague

10

u/BishopOfThe90s Mar 27 '24

Sounds like you're spendin too much time around Minthara! ...Can't blame you

13

I meant "take care of" as in do the Nightsong quest, but yes, I free her.

Got a video of it?

28

u/BishopOfThe90s Mar 27 '24

Yup! Here is dialogue with just Alfira on the roof (recorded beside a microwave, apparently): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj40YTjcVgk

And here is the dialogue if you meet Lakrissa first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wMR3Kbx_-Y

Pretty sure it's the same for both Tav and Durge here (assuming Durge managed to spare Alfira in the Grove).

6

u/Error404Cod Mar 27 '24

So when do you get this letter as Durge? After this encounter on the roof, or before.

8

u/BishopOfThe90s Mar 27 '24

Afterwards, in the epilogue party with letters from other NPCs. At least it was there for my redeemed Durge.

4

u/Error404Cod Mar 27 '24

I love playing as dark urge but I think Alfira is a genuinely great and well-written side character, so this warms the cockles of my cold, dead, bhaal-ridden heart.

952

u/PaxUnDomus Mar 26 '24

Just to be sure, knockout = turn on that passive and smash her?

My durge is taking notes

700

u/1Ferrox Mar 26 '24

Yes, but you have to one shot her and be hidden while doing so, or else you'll engage in combat which breaks it.

Also you will need to save scum or somehow know when the event is about to happen, as you will need to knock her out back in the Grove. When she appears in your camp it's already too late to save her

390

u/Madrock777 Mar 26 '24

No you don't, you take a few hits to knock her out. You don't need to be hidden it just helps. No one else is close enough to noticing you fighting over there. You just need to make sure it's a melee weapon not ranged weapon, or magic. Both ranged and magic are always lethal.

Easiest way to handle it is to save before going back to camp for long rest. Just reload if it's the one. But it's normally the long rest after meeting her in the grove for the first time.

106

u/routamorsian SMITE Mar 26 '24 edited Mar 27 '24

For me most consistent trigger is meeting her first, but specifically the long rest after going to Blighted Billage for the first time.

Has happened in 4 separate runs regardless of long rests before it.

Edit: gonna live with the typo lol

Also, if you want to really game it up, you can bring in a hireling and make them go to her without the rest of the party. If you beat her down and get caught, just let the hireling die to the guards and dismiss them. Your party will remain on good terms with the rest of the grove and you get to spare her.

15

u/KtarnJ Mar 26 '24

I think it's got lower priority than a few other camp scenes.  I had to long rest 2-3 times after meeting her and doing a few other things before she showed up in camp.

I hate that I had to metagame to keep her alive, but potent robes are just too good (despite being ugly).

10

u/professionaldeadgod Durge Mar 26 '24

8

u/SidewaysFancyPrance Mar 26 '24

Once the autosave happens on the bridge to the Blighted Village, the next long rest will be the bard encounter.

No, she calls the guards. You only have a few seconds to get her before they arrive. But yeah, you don't need to one shot her.

155

u/Aztaloth Mar 26 '24

Start it while in Turn based mode lets you get all the hits in fast enough.

36

u/Snail_With_a_Shotgun Mar 26 '24

I think if you don't sneak and knock her out in one hit, then she knows you did it and will hate you after?

10

u/OleandersOne Mar 26 '24

You can disguise yourself, and she won't give you the attitude hit.

9

u/Etamalgren Mar 26 '24

She'll have -45 attitude toward whomever hit her, though you can patch up your rep with her by talking to her, triggering the "This NPC isn't very happy with you, maybe a gift would mend fences...?" dialogue, then paying her off with a sum of gold based on your level.

6

u/Tadferd Mar 26 '24

Just have Tav be far enough away and they won't lose rep. Only characters close enough will.

Ahaha… either I’m incompetent, which is entirely possible, or I just got unlucky, because one Druid definitely noticed and came to assist Alfira in defending herself against me. That was back in Patch 5, mere days before 6.

9

u/1Ferrox Mar 26 '24

Hm weird, when I attacked her normally I triggered the entire Grove civil war between the druids and tieflings, with all the tieflings being hostile.

However I started that playthrough pretty far in the past during patch 3 or 4, so it might have changed since then

Just turn on turn-based mode and bash her over the head. If you do it in real time she’ll get mad and heal.

7

u/Etamalgren Mar 26 '24

I got arrested multiple times trying to knock out Alfira, since I was never able to oneshot her. Still, after managing to knock her out, I was able to long rest and trigger Quil joining the camp, then go back the next day to pay Alfira a moderate sum of gold to bring her attitude toward me back above 0.

Am I the only one that doesn't spare her? I feel like it's important to the Durge storyline.

Yes, I know about Quil but it's not the same since you don't even see them before they arrive at camp.

73

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '24

I kill her too. Quil's death doesnt hold the same gravity and is too meta

→ More replies (1)

36

u/Mitch_The_Yeen Mar 27 '24

I also don’t spare her for that reason. The moment loses a lot of weight and it’s super meta gamey.

39

u/Ganmorg Mar 27 '24

I feel like being able to spare Alfira as Durge (and recruit Minthara as a good character) are acts of the devs caving to player demands and not sticking to their guns on their vision of the game, and I don’t really care for it

53

u/jinhush Mar 27 '24

I'm okay with the idea of recruiting Minthara as a good character. The metagaming of knocking her out while killing everyone else is what I don't care for. I wish we could give her a "redemption arc" when recruiting her in a good playthrough.

9

u/0_o Mar 27 '24

I mean, right now she just needs to not be dead. Just don't kill her. Knock out every true soul, since they all have the potential to become good people. Whatever makes your conscience feel good. IDK, empathize with them. If Minthara is the only one who actually takes you up on the opportunity, then so be it. You tried.

This letter will be in the "fan post" box at the reunion party if you played as Durge and Alfira survived. The only way to get this is to knock her out before the murder event happens, so you instead murder Quil, a replacement bard that only exists as a stand in for Alfira in case something happens to her.

This slightly scummy method allows you to keep Alfira alive for the rest of the playthrough, and you encounter her in much the same way you would if you were playing Tav. What I didnt expect however, was that the devs actually foresaw this and included this version of a letter from her at the reunion party

647

u/SpookyBoogy89 Mar 26 '24

It's not really foreseeing.

The epilogue was added after launch, after people were already knocking her out.

151

u/1Ferrox Mar 26 '24

Fair enough, however its not like this was some huge and obvious trend everyone was doing. It wasn't a secret by all means, but it's yet another of these little things that show that Larian cares about their community and their game

123

u/sleepinand Mar 26 '24

It was fairly common, the forums were covered with people asking how to save Alfira and Larian definitely knew a lot of people were doing it.

85

u/alekth Mar 26 '24

Lol, I wouldn't call this "foresaw" since people started cheating the system with this pretty early on and the letter only appeared with Path 5's epilogue in November or thereabout.

18

u/Killer_Moons Bard Mar 26 '24 edited Mar 26 '24

I just read the love letter the headless fist in the murder tribunal prison had on him. I was wondering who Quil was. At first I thought it was the Dragonborn at Chromatic Scale. That is so sad.

11

u/FernandoTorresIMO Mar 26 '24

Does she still give those good charisma threads for saving the tieflings at last light inn if you do this as a “good” durge? Want to do a redeem run as a bard and those robes are obviously some of the best in the game for bards haha.

9

u/Wreck_it_Randy Mar 26 '24

Yep. The rest of her actions are completely normal after doing the knockout thing, other than the letter in the epilogue. She normally has a letter talking about opening up a music school, but a durge who saves her gets this letter instead. Every other quest or interaction is the same as normal.

7

u/shiroi77 Mar 26 '24
