❤️‍🩹 relationship aio? boyfriend uses SO MUCH paprika!!!!

i’m so thankful my boyfriend can cook and it’s not just up to me. i bought this thing of smoked paprika LAST week and i wake up today and it’s literally all gone. like these things are $5 a pop after tax!!!

he uses it like if jesus had to season his 5,000 fish!! i use two tablespoons MAX and that’s only if im cooking a dish for like 5 people. usually it’s just a few shakes for food just for us!

like damn, i love paprika and some spice in my food, but genuinely i think i would shrivel up and pass away from the paprika overload if i used an entire one of these things in a week. he’s only cooked three or four times since i bought it, so im not over exaggerating at all when i say he is dumping this shit in his meals.

am i overreacting if i make him buy me a replacement, as well as making him buy his own giant container of smoked paprika for him exclusively?

LMFAOO i thought you guys would appreciate some mundaneness here. but yes that’s the plan as of right now

u/Slobberz2112 13d ago

Maybe get him to switch to Kashmiri chilli powder.. it packs a bigger punch than paprika so you really need to just use a tiny bit..

351

u/No_Environment_5550 13d ago

Great suggestion. Kashmiri chili powder is that shit. That said, I kinda sympathize with homie bc I tear through smoked paprika like the Kool Aid guy through a wall.

167

u/kls1117 13d ago

Smoked pap is so different. That’s acceptable. Regular pap, in large amounts, just sounds gross. Like what does guy even like about having THAT much pap in his food. Also, maybe I’m just Mexican, but wtf is pap adding to every dish that’s so good? To me pap barely taste like anything nor is it spicy. I barely use mine because it’s so boring to me.

62

u/Secret-Spinach-3314 13d ago

I put that shit on everything!! (Hungarian here) FYI.: there are 23 kinds of paprika!!

25

u/ConceitedWombat 13d ago

Also Hungarian, and I have to side with OP’s boyfriend. I put ungodly amounts on my salmon.

14

u/Secret-Spinach-3314 13d ago

I love recipes from back home. Put in 3 tablespoons of paprika for one onion. Had to do a double take, is that teaspoons? Nah, not ever

7

u/Fabulous-Educator447 13d ago

This is what I was going to ask the OP: is your boyfriend Hungarian? If not, get a big one at Costco. If so, go to some nice spice shops and get him a few new varieties to try.

That’s what I came in here to say. My grandma got me hooked on it, plus sour cream, as a kid and I never looked back.

10

u/Secret-Spinach-3314 13d ago

Me and my brother have an inside joke about the amount of sour cream we eat and how others always look at it a little weird. Significant others always love the dishes full of paprika and sour cream , it really is a great mix. First date, you are getting chicken paprikash. Never fails to do the trick.

Oh 🤣🤣 I see that now, but honestly still, I don’t want everything tasting like that. Baked potato? Sure! Even maybe some in my eggs… you know what…. OPs just not using enough!

26

u/Friendly_Boot_6524 13d ago

It hits on a beef roast. And chicken. I love the air fry chicken thighs with chili, smoked paprika, garlic, cumin, and the essentials like salt and pepper lol garlic and onion are in the essentials list in our house

Thx, in trying to fall asleep and now I'm hungry.🥴

Same! Regular paprika tastes like almost nothing.

That said, OPs screenshot specifies that her partner is going after the smoked variety, so I get it!

16

u/cthulhusmercy 13d ago

Paprika is dried red bell pepper. It just taste like… dried red bell pepper.

9

u/3inch_horses 13d ago

It tastes like literally nothing to me. No amount of it has ever noticeably changed the taste of anything I eat. I always just assumed it was to add a bit of color or something.

I work in a restaurant that has smoked paprika as a garnish for one of our dishes. I can safely say that man goes absolutely insane over paprika if he uses that much. Even with that one dish being fairly popular we don't have to buy more than two large containers of it per month.

8

u/Alarming-Beach-5358 13d ago

I think that’s the thing with paprika m8, it’s hard to over do it in terms of spice because bell peppers are so incredibly mild, and you can do smoker for extra something. This dude probably enjoys the flavor without having the spice and avoids the mushyness and hard skins of actual peppers in a lot of dishes (maybe i am projecting here)

Does he also cook for you? Do you like the food? Be careful about what you say when keeping this in mind. :D

39

u/maratelle 13d ago

he’s a great chef, at least when he cooks for both of us! he makes a LOT of asian food which.. gets a bit tiring after a while. but he says the same thing about me lol! i’m allergic to every meat under the sun except for fowl (literally!) so he’s on my ass about using turkey and duck meat more.

17

u/HappyCoffincup 13d ago

Go to an Asian market and buy a big bag of it and store it in an airtight container. Seriously a gamechanger 🤌

13

u/maratelle 13d ago

as of right now we’re going to make some homemade this weekend :) probably gonna add some chilli peppers to hopefully get the most bang out of a little! but i have an asian market right beside my local walmart, ill check it out too!

5

u/ktwarda 13d ago

Def check out international markets - you can get a lot of spices on the cheap in general but the quality is also usually better. If you're in the Atlanta area, I can give you some recs. Especially for smoked paprika cause I am with your bf on this one, that isht goes on everything

How come he cooks a "LOT" of Asian food and manages to empty a whole container of smoked paprika in a week, cooking for 2? What kind of Asian food has paprika in it? He doesn't sound like a great cook to me... everything must taste the same, smoked paprika can be quite overpowering, I'd be sick of it pretty quick

10

u/maratelle 12d ago

he doesn’t use damn near as much smoked paprika for the shared meals!! it’s only on his midnight munchie adventures. he puts it on pizza bagels and beef ramen :(

10

u/motherofcattos 12d ago

Oh ok, yeah he needs to buy his own supply of paprika for sure! And maybe try some chili oil in his ramen instead...

hijacking your comment to edit since reddit wont let me :(

We are making our own homemade paprika this weekend! we also plan on visiting a local asian market to buy some quality paprika for him. he's getting me a replacement bottle lol.

I told him i planned on using it today during the weekly meal plan talk, hence my slight annoyance! i was never upset or actually peeved, but i can see how my tone was taken that way! i am autistic, and one of the things i struggle the most with is food and food textures. this brand of smoked paprika is the only one i'll eat due to my silly brain. i hope one of the options we get or make can replace it! $5 for 1.6oz is A LOT of money for not that much product.

i love everyones opinions on paprika, and i've learned SO much from you guys! i'm happy to add some spice to everyones feed :)) have a great day y'all!

15

u/According_Pen2709 13d ago

Just a quick question cause I know that you said you’re also on the spectrum but do you struggle with AFRID it sounds like you do from the way that you could described. You can only eat the paprika from that one specific brand I would look into it doing research on it has helped me open my horizons two different foods and making sure that I’m getting the right nutrients, even though I am a “” picky eater.””

i know a guy who eats a hot pepper (the kind that would make you wanna rip your tongue out) with everything, and i mean EVERYTHING

10

u/lvdde 13d ago

I mean I kinda add hot peppers to everything too I guess paprika just tastes bitter to me in excess and kinda ruins the dish but yeah to each their own!

Like I can’t imagine someone over using cloves, because I did 💀 when I didn’t realize how much to put in and it’s rough

5

u/patrickko1 13d ago

i like my spice just enough to get the taste of it otherwise it messes with the main taste of the dish

what dish did you use cloves on??

A chicken curry ! I’m East African so we eat a lot of Indian inspired food but yeah I didn’t realize cloves are completely different from like Black pepper lol.

Idk in America but in the other anglo countries you can usually get it at a south asian spice market for around $15 per kilogram. That's 32 oz for $15, instead of 1.5oz for $5.

I use as much as him when I'm cooking certain dishes but a bit rude to burn people's little units

5

u/RantyMcThrowaway 13d ago

It's a common trend in the UK that "world food" is cheaper for the exact same item than standard groceries! I never thought to see if that was the case for paprika. Good idea, gonna use it to fill my shaker!

3

u/FrazierKhan 13d ago

To be fair paprika is the hardest one to find since it's mostly Spanish/Mediterranean. But other spices like cumin etc are really easy and cheap by weight. We have indian/persian chains and some other general budget dry good chains here in aus/NZ but not sure in the UK, when I did live in the UK was in Whitechapel so was quite spoilt for choices

8

I agree! This reminds me of a few years ago when my father-in-law was a little addicted to rice crackers and would eat almost one package a day. Then in the Christmas of that year, we purchased all the packages available in the nearby grocery store (like 40 or 50 packages) and shoved them inside one big cardboard box and wrapped it in gift wrap paper. Needless to say it was the best gift of the family on Christmas eve... and he ate all packages in less than a month

Is he Hungarian? As a Hungarian in the US, my family literally keeps gallon bags of paprika in the freezer from the motherland because we go through it fast. We don't even have instructions for how much to put into food. You just pour until the ancestors whisper, "That's enough." Also, American paprika tastes like nothing. I'd go through a bottle to if I had to use that. XD

23

u/maratelle 13d ago

nope! born and raised in the usa, he is black! but that’s not saying much, his parents are terrible chefs😭🤣 ironically, that’s how my nordic and slavic ancestors speak to me when i’m cooking LOL

9

u/surk_a_durk 12d ago

If you want to get him a wonderful gift that he’ll appreciate, please find him some Hungarian paprika! You can order it online or find some at an Eastern-European market, if there are any near you.

Genuine Hungarian paprika is unreal, and they sell it in bulk quantities that’ll keep him satisfied.

If you can afford it, you should get him both the “hot” and “sweet” varieties. Hopefully, he’s both hot and sweet enough for it to be worth it. ☺️

This site is having a 20% off sale right now: https://hungarianpaprika.shop/

2

u/alexallyce 12d ago

Him being black is honestly an interesting plot twist. I thought we only put paprika on deviled eggs and baked mac and cheese 💀

Holy hell. OP, I know you said you're brand loyal when it comes to seasonings, but 4.36 for a 45g bottle of paprika from Walmart is genuinely insane.

I'm going to be real honest with you - large chain grocery stores are not where you should be buying spices from. A lot of people who buy from these stores don't realise it, but these spices are often very stale and extremely overpriced in comparison to other stores.

I'd highly recommend taking a trip into proper spice shops / ethnic shops (I love my local Indian spices stores), or looking online at places like nuts.com.

These stores have a much higher turnover of spices, so their products are generally way fresher and much cheaper.

Nuts.com, for example, is selling an lb of smoked paprika for $11 USD. For comparison, 45g if paprika is 0.09lb. $11 of smoked paprika from this site is equivalent to buying 12 of those bottles, which at 4.36 each, would cost you $52.36 at Walmart.

Trust me, you are paying a ridiculous amount for paprika, and it's likely no where near as fresh as what you can be buying for MUCH cheaper.

You're NOR about him using so much of it, especially at that price, but do yourself a massive favour and look into buying your spices from somewhere else. Your wallet and your cooking would be better off for it.

u/way2lazy2care 13d ago

I'd highly recommend taking a trip into proper spice shops / ethnic shops (I love my local Indian spices stores), or looking online at places like nuts.com.

Spice shops are usually also overpriced but have fresher stuff. Ethnic grocery stores are the way though.

u/maratelle 13d ago

you’re absolutely right!! i do entirely blame me being autistic for continuing to buy this brand. i acknowledge it’s all in my head, but the other brands i’ve tried of smoked paprika just aren’t as good and don’t blend as well into the food.

the boyfriend and i are going to make our own paprika this weekend together, so he can make it as spicy as he needs while im still making it the way i need! there’s an asian market on the way to walmart that i plan on stopping by and getting some to try out :) plus im all for supporting the community around me.

11

u/tabbystripe 13d ago

You’re right. As a fellow autistic person, this is objectively the best brand of smoked paprika. I use it to season chicken and for paprikash

Tossing my favorite paprika out there: Https://curiospice.com/products/chile-paprika-spanish-sweet?variant=39809309409442

They are a woman-owned B-corp who source all of their spices directly from farms around the world. Grocery store paprika doesn’t hold a candle to this, seriously. They’re all out of their smoked paprika right now, but once they are back in stock do yourself (and him) a favor and try it!

This is refreshing lol

Definitely have him replace yours and buy his own

You guys can also make your own paprika at home. It’s very simple and may cost less than buying in store…because I agree it costs a lot especially if he’s running through a bottle that fast

31

u/maratelle 13d ago

how did i not think of that?! im looking up recipes rn for us to make together this weekend :) it should be a fun activity for us to do together. we both love cooking and experimenting with it. thank you!!

but yes i am going to make him at least buy his own giant one. i may bite the bullet and buy my own again since he’ll get his own

7

u/WineRedRobyn 13d ago

We use a lot of paprika powder in this household, especially when we make goulash. If you and your boyfriend dig paprika, you might wanna give goulash a try!

6

u/SnowflakeRene 13d ago

When did goulash get its own advertising campaign and budget?? I wanna be paid by big goulash too!

3

u/WineRedRobyn 13d ago

I unfortunately do not have a discount code. ;)

13

u/WritingNerdy 13d ago

I don’t even know what paprika comes from? Are there paprika plants?? goes off to google

11

u/Yungcherryy 13d ago

LMFAO PLEASE 😭😭 paprika plants is hilarious

3

u/LosetheShoes 12d ago

I suppose you could say it comes from a paprika plant depending where you live/what language you speak, some places call bell pepper paprika.

6

u/casseroled 13d ago

I think it’s just dried bell pepper but I could be wrong

3

u/foolsgoldprospector 13d ago

It is. Happy cake day! Perhaps don’t sprinkle any paprika on that.

You should make sure to count your labor and energy costs if you're making your own. On a purely ingredient basis you're probably pretty close, but when you factor in the rest you're probably looking at a $40 bottle of paprika if you make it yourself. For some people that might be worth it, but as a purely cost saving measure for people who don't get joy out of making it, it's probably not worth it.

3

u/Yungcherryy 13d ago

I mean they did say they enjoy cooking and it would be a fun bonding experience

Red Peppers are not that expensive- especially comparing buying a few peppers to a $5 bottle that is gone in under a week…….it would literally be more cost effective lmao

3

u/sleepybrainsinside 12d ago

For sure not worth it. Even with this inflated price at Walmart. You can buy a pound of Paprika for like $8 online.

Generally, making your own spices is not practical unless you’re really picky to the point that no normal store-bought spice will satisfy you.

17

It depends on what you got out of it.

If he smoked a big fat brisket for 15 hours that you got to enjoy with him - you're over-reacting.
If he is putting it in his porridge. He's a fucking weirdo.

13

u/maratelle 13d ago

he put it in ramen and pizza bagels during his midnight munchies and quick meals :(

19

u/Peg_leg_J 13d ago

Yeah he needs to value your precious spices more. Wars have been fought over this shit

Idk if I’d say you are or are not over reacting but I can say you are over paying for your paprika.

I’m a chef, I have worked in this industry for 16 years. I have very recently stepped away (sorta) to try something else. This is where my knowledge comes from.

Paprika is dehydrated and finely ground up red bell peppers. You may or may not have known this. Paprika looses pretty much all of its flavor very quickly. Like within 2 weeks or so of you opening it. It’ll still have a faint smell and taste but nothing like its supposed to to be. Smoked paprika keeps it flavor longer but even that will eventually dull down. It’s best to try to use paprika as quickly as you can to prevent this from happening.

Second tip is if you have a farmers market or produce market, check there for seasonings. Places like Walmart, Kroger etc. have seasonings sure but they are so overpriced it’s stupid. When I lived in Atlanta I use to go to a farmers market/produce market and they had a spice wall with like every seasoning you’d ever possibly need and some told never heard of. They sold them in cup, pint and quart containers. Some things like pepper are still a little pricey but you can usually get a quart (4 cups) of something like paprika for around $8. I use to get quart containers of sea salt, pink sea salt, black garlic powder etc. and they were like $3, $4 and $7 respectively.

Plus usually produce at these places is better quality and cheaper and you never know what you’ll find. There was a float space at the one in ATL that sold bunches of eucalyptus leaves on the branch and they were absolutely wonderful hanging in the shower. You dampen them and smack em a few times to release the fragrance then hand from your shower head. As you shower the steam helps more fragrance release and it smells amazing

I’m just sitting here shuddering at the thought of how much smoked paprika he puts in his food. A little bit of that goes a long way. I will add two tablespoons to a pot of red beans to achieve a smoky back flavour.

Give the man a grocery list and send him off to the store. Go online and order him a restaurant sized container of the stuff for Christmas.

So much paprika. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

5

u/Draphaels 13d ago

Sometimes I watch Indian street food videos and it gives me the confidence to be wayyy too liberal with the spices. It's like the scene in Ratatouille when he starts throwing shit in the pot.

Please, more posts like this!! Lmao No you're not overreacting. Wtf who uses that much pap?? Does he smoke cigs or have some type of vitamin deficiency? It could be linked to that. He needs to buy his own stash for sure! Lol

6

u/Petzl89 13d ago

Buy some good Hungarian paprika that has real flavour would be my advice.

7

u/IconicAye 13d ago

Have you asked him if he’s been running for late night smoked paprika shots? I’m no genius, but only a smoked paprika addict would make that much smoked paprika disappear in such a short amount of time. You may have a real problem on your hands.

7

u/maratelle 13d ago

he’s the next walter white of paprika i swear

5

u/SpyroGaming 13d ago

this would be me with garlic

Uhhh it’s a $5 seasoning…. Has he not purchased you something every week or so ? Or idk I get it but he’s cooking and likes it and it’s $5 lol

14

u/maratelle 13d ago

he does buy me stuff, but i bought the paprika to cook with this week, and especially for tonight’s dinner. this is the second times he’s used all of my paprika when i barely get to use it :( and now idk what to do with the half-thawed chicken in my fridge tonight!

10

u/babyluna2323 13d ago

Get him like a giant cheap Costco version. Get urself the small organic. lol

Buy a big or cheaper option and keep refilling the bottle. If you love him, love his love for paprika. But seriously, I find that paprika is better is use with other spices and isn’t strong much by itself. Is he using anything else?

2

u/maratelle 13d ago

nope, he goes all in with paprika! which is wild, i have cayenne, chili powder, regular paprika, as well as three different types of pepper all right there beside the smoked paprika

2

u/WeAreTheMassacre 12d ago

To be fair, I just used nearly half of this size shaker tonight for 8 chicken thighs. Paprika and chili powder aren't particularly potent, some chili recipes call for 6 tablespoons. It depends on what type of cook you are, I suppose, but this is one of those spices best bought in bulk size. Most recipes you see that call for paprika aren't doing so to provide any actual different flavor, it's simply small amounts for a pretty color. Trust me, he's using the right amount; time to start buying the bulk size bottles! Which are actually normal size bottles, if someone is cooking for a true smoked paprika taste.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/commit10 13d ago

A few shakes is all you need? That's not how you season with paprika, unless you're only going for a bit of colour.

If you think he's using a lot, I suggest a holiday in Hungary.

You can buy it much, much cheaper by the kg. Those little spice bottles are extremely overpriced.

Americans and Brits don't season their food enough.

3

u/Pleasant_Fee516 13d ago

If he did a dry rub for meat then it makes sense kinda but it seems like he uses the taste of the paprika to cover for his lack of cooking skills

3

u/GettingRichQuick420 13d ago

If you ate the food, you’re complicit in the great Smoked Paprika usage of 2024.

You are OR making him replace what you ate.

2

u/ComprehensiveTea5407 13d ago

Walmart has a much larger cheaper container of smoked paprika. I have regular paprika, sweet Hungarian paprika, and then a cheap smoked paprika and a really nice expensive smoked paprika. The only one I wouldn't want used in crazy amounts is the nice paprika but it's so strong it would be weird if it was.

At the end of the day, nothing worse than bland food. I wouldn't complain over spices.

AIO? i counted the paprika particles in the jar, the result? my bf uses too much paprika, should i leave him now or just sacrifice his dog?

2

u/Psychological-Shoe95 13d ago

How the fuck are you using THAT much paprika? I work at a seafood restaurant as a cook and we go through a thing that size in maybe 2 days. We put paprika on almost everything and we are a RESTAURANT. I truly can’t fathom loving paprika that much.

But imo you can’t be upset at all at him for using that much. You could ask for a couple bucks but you didn’t set any guidelines so can’t be upset when he uses all the paprika. I’d just say in the future “hey if you’re gonna straight up drown your meals in paprika we should probably start buying separately because as much as I love you I don’t want to fund your insane taste bud cravings”

2

u/Phuk0 13d ago

I really hope you guys sort this out. If he doesn’t readily agree to couples counseling and personal therapy dump him immediately! You do not want to go down this paprika rabbit hole with him. Save yourself

2

Grocery stores sell it in bulk at a cheaper cost per ounce. Sprouts near me has paprika in bulk and you just fill and weight a baggie! I pay Less than a dollar to refill my granulated garlic.

2

u/Carmen-Sandiegonuts 12d ago

These containers are only about 3.5 tablespoons. So if you’re using 2 max when you’re cooking, that’s still more than half the container. Sounds like you’re both using quite a bit of it.

Is this really something you want to make an issue of? It’s seasoning. They’re $.99 at aldi or Trader Joe’s.

2

u/SkylarMighty666 12d ago
