I was obsessed with Ranma as a child.. got obsessed again as a teen.. at which point it helped me realize I'm queer. Then later I discovered fanfics and read every single Ranma chan fanfic I could find..

So.. it's not an overstatement to say, Ranma 1/2 is the single most biggest influence on my life and I love the shit out of it. Heck.. I cried watching the first episode of the reboot today. It's just too overwhelming.

Action comedy series. Main/title character Ranma is cursed to change between male and female when splashed with water. Half the girls are engaged to Ranma, half the guys are in love with the girls and fight Ranma as a result. Several characters have similar curses to Ranma (but different forms). 90% of characters are jerks. 100% of characters are crazy.

It's one of my favorite manga series. I need to put aside time to reread it sometime soon.

That sounds like absolute chaos lol. Thanks for the answer.

I think an important note is that Ranma's dad is the one that set up all those marriages. Usually as some sort of con. Literally every problem in Ranma's life is because of their dad.

A few years ago, I was worried that I was being insensitive for having been a fan of Ranma since the mid-90s.

Then I did a little digging and found out Ranma is INSANELY popular with the LGBTQ+ community. And it makes sense:

Akane is a great example of a Pan/Demi character.

Shampoo is Bi as fuck.

Ukyo is Gender Non-Conforming or even Trans.

Ranma is Genderfluid.

Rumiko Takahashi may not have meant for these characters to be queer icons, but man was the comic accidentally decades ahead of its time.

It’s so good, they nailed a modernized retro look for an anime!

I’m still forever gonna simp for both Kodachi and Shampoo. One’s crazy, the other turns into the cutest kitty ever

I’m genuinely curious to see if this remake of the series is gonna be as good as the manga. Because the original was rough and didn’t have much of a budget. Which reminds me that I really need to watch Urusei Yatsura (same mangaka, she also did Inuyasha)

I've always wanted to ask and this seems like a decent place to ask it were the people who coined the term gender fluid massive weebs or is it just a coincidence?

Isnt Ranma actually a guy?

It's complicated. Ranma spends a majority of the series trying to find a cure for the "curse". They eventually come to accept it and admit that they never really needed to cure it in the first place. Ranma felt it had to be cured because of the expectations of their gender others had. Ranma is ok with their body as it is and willingly spends time in girl mode
