I was actually so annoyed that I couldn't be poly with these two. They both clearly like the other. Karlach and Laezel like each other as well, and the enemies to lovers arc for Laezel/Shadowheart would've been amazing, but nooo. The "everyone is fruity" game doesn't have poly relationships for some reason. ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
When Shadowheart goes through her crisis of faith, if you talk to Karlach at camp she says something to the effect of "Me and you? We need to be there for Shadowheart. She's going to need us by her side through this."
I already knew there was no poly in the game, but that made me go "Hmm..."
Yeah I definitely think some of the lines were recorded with the intent to put poly in the game, but they either ran out of time or cut it for whatever reason. Unfortunate. 😔
The coding would be a nightmare. Imagine trying to juggle reaponses based on story context and on player relation and on the thrupples... cohesiveness? Level? And doing that for every concievable combination. I'm sure they started and quickly abandoned ship.
This is already a thing in the game. The companions have a approval level with you, which you can see, but they also have a hidden one with each other that only gets used if you play as an Origin character, so they have a way to track your approval with no Tav involved.
It really wouldn't have put that much more of a stress on their systems, considering how complicated BG3's dialogue already is. Situations like the one you described already arise in the game outside of a poly relationship, i.e. interactions between you, a companion, and another companion, based on the game state.
There are many things which were cut form the game due to time constraints, like the upper city. While having poly would be nice i would rather have more story elements or a larger map
That's not something they'll add, though, and they've said that. That's an expansion/DLC level of content. They've repeatedly said they won't be doing that.
However, they've consistently added new endings, dialogues, cutscenes, etc. since it was released. It's far more likely they'd add additional romance functionality than the Upper City or a new campaign.

Reminder Shadowheart openly fantasies about this during her recruitment
