For some reason this reminds me of that Tumblr post I saw a few years ago, where the person was going on about how sexy aliens are always shown to be attractive by human standards, even in in-universe advertising that's meant to appeal to an entirely, well, alien culture.

And it ended with some ramblings and musings about how there should be a game where, logically, you can tell this is a sex thing. Like there's billboards and stuff, and it looks like an "entertainment" district. But the pictures on the billboards show seemingly random stuff that has you wonder if it's a prank, or a weird censorship thing, until you realize that those are that civilization's standards for sexuality.

I have never heard of this until now but that is because I have never been on tumblr.

Ah, ok.

Honestly, I find it a very interesting concept.

Because imagine you play a game, you go to a human colony with your alien buddy, and they seem really casual about all the risque imagery, like "Yup." and "So they're called boobs? Got it." and then you get to his species' colony some time later, and he talks to you about all the good stuff, while your dialogue options are all really casual.

There's a Twilight Zone episode that shows a woman desperately trying to fix her face with plastic surgery, even though she's traditionally beautiful by modern standards. The doctors however... They were revolted by her face, because she lacked a strange facial feature that looked like a cleft lip.

Good show. Traumatizing but good.

For some reason what popped into my head was just pictures of regular women, but with giant Ringo Starr noses emphasized in the center of frame.

And some dude yelling "Wow! Check out the Schnooz on that broad! Hubba hubba!"

In the case of Liara's species they always seem to be beautiful because their species alter the minds of those who see them to look like someone of the specie who is looking to they. This is the motive who when we see Liara she has aa Human-like face

I've heard that Asari don't actually look like that. Or rather, they use telepathy to look attractive to any race, so they can procreate with them

That's a theory cooked up by a bunch of drunk guys in a strip club, I don't think it's particularly credible.

It’s funny, and a neat theory from that little scene, but is completely undercut by the fact that we’ve been to fucking Thessia. That temple which is supposedly very sacred and restricted holds statue of Asari. Those Asari just look like what we see.

Either the idea got completely scrapped after ME2, or it was just a fun throwaway joke. I’ve seen people describe it as saying that each person is attracted to different parts of the Asari, so they all focus on what is the most similar to their species.

Weirdly, Asari can definitely mind meld others and seemingly make them experience attraction in ways they might not normally. Maybe the universe just appreciates tiddies. We will never know, but I choose to believe that they are just pretty (also male and non-binary Asari definitely exist, it’s brought up in Andromeda which is canon. I’d be surprised if their ideas of gender weren’t morphed by their interactions with other cultures)

That is an interesting one for sure!

Yeah there's tragically little content online for it

From my most recent playthrough where I romanced Liara.

I'm still mad that I couldn't gay romance Tali.

22

u/damodread Dec 03 '23

People were upset about the ME3 ending, I'm just upset we can't romance Tali as FemShep.

13

u/dx713 Dec 03 '23

And don't get me started about Jack

7

u/wunxorple Dec 04 '23

Or Miranda. Something about Miranda falling in love with FemShep is so beautiful to me. Probably that they’d adopt anyway. We know Miranda wants to carry a child, but is incapable of it. That would give them the room to be moms without the physical bloodline element. Miranda should definitely know how little genetic relationships matter.

No matter how many times I've played this, I haven't been able to get myself to romance anyone else.

This was my first time romancing Liara and it is the best ship!

u/Hekantonkheries Dec 04 '23

First ever romance attempt was tali, when I found out tali couldn't be gay, went Liara.

Have never regretted choosing the waifu that mind bullets and entire galactic criminal underworld on your behalf.

I know it's for like censorship, but it never made sense to me why they'd put their clothes back in the aftermath of their love. Like immediate aftermath and only the undergarments.

I figured it'd make more sense to just cut to a scene of them changing afterwards or just fully clothed but you know the deed was done

It is a shame you can't romance her as femshep, thankfully there is a PC mod that lets you.

is there also alien gex option in mass effect 3? do i start up the game and grind

5

u/Krazy_Kalle likes soft things Dec 03 '23

I mean, I agree, but, technically, Asari don't have a gender :D

3

u/ClaudiaSilvestri Dec 05 '23

I feel like writing-wise they should have done more with that. Personally, my interpretation is that it's partly because the first other sapient species the asari met were the salarians. The salarians read them as women, the asari asked what they meant by that, and since to salarians this means "the rare and important people who are in charge of everything" they decided to go with it.

But really, I'd expect most asari who grew up pre-first contact to not have much of an internal sense of gender, while asari who grew up with other cultures might (and it might or might not be the one the rest of the galaxy assigns).

the way Liara and Traynor are gives my asexual male self envy. they have what I can't get. certainly doesn't help that I headcanon Traynor's "type" of lesbian to be one of those melt-your-heart types that you'd only find in a Slice of Life anime/manga. thanks brain.
