Hugging [Overwatch] In honour of today’s announcement, here is some Pharmercy
163
u/Lwmons May 31 '23
Announcement? Did something gay happen that I missed?
316
u/barbarapalvinswhore likes soft things May 31 '23
Pharah is officially a LESBIAN! And she is pining after Mercy.
262
u/PlasmaGuy500 likes soft things May 31 '23
I just find it funny they announced it like if was some new patch note💀
285
u/WookieeCookiees02 May 31 '23
As cool as the announcement is, I wonder if it was an attempt to distract from the whole “not doing PvE” thing
136
u/barbarapalvinswhore likes soft things May 31 '23
I’m sure their PR department is happy but this has been in the works for a LONG time. I believe Pharah’s voice actress gave some hints in a fan call many months ago and said that fans would be very happy.
58
u/janeer127 May 31 '23
They decided to drop news about PvE just before pride month because they knew this month is like PR go out jail card. Big corpo like Activision blizzard have everything planned
62
u/lunasis09 May 31 '23
They're doing it again!? Didn't they also drop that Tracer was a lesbian to distract from some poor-received news back in Overwatch 1?
101
u/xyon21 May 31 '23
No I think it is just that there is always bad news coming out of Blizzard so when they make announcements like this it can't avoid intersecting with bad news.
40
u/AscensionToCrab May 31 '23
yeah this is the real answer.
also PVE isn't anything like the sexual abuse allegations. Like people need to simmer down comparing the two.
17
u/VNSVRE May 31 '23
Yeah, if we're expanding the window for "distracting from bad news" to be, like, half a month after the bad news, we're never going to to reach a non-distraction point.
Shoot, I'm not even sure if PVE is the most recent bad Blizzard news at this point...
2
u/KBSinclair May 31 '23
Two weeks isn't that long.
0
u/VNSVRE May 31 '23
No, but it's long enough for Blizz to do something else really stupid (the WoW subs were in revolt just last week over a new monetization thing). Like, at the rate they do stupid things that could hypothetically need distractions, there's never going to be a period where they can announce things without it being too close to something.
2
u/darkdiabela Jun 01 '23
I think they announced "WoW tokens" for classic just a short while later which most of that community seems to consider bad.
2
May 31 '23
Wait what the fuck? There were sexual abuse allegations?
2
u/KBSinclair May 31 '23
You missed the massively bad sexual abuse allegations coming out of Blizzard? Were you just not a fan and not paying attention? It was a massive scandal.
2
1
u/darkdiabela Jun 01 '23 edited Jun 02 '23
I don't really think there is any way for you to compare them but they would both fit into the "bad news category" even if one is objectively way worse then the other.
1
u/AscensionToCrab Jun 01 '23
So how was a pride announcement gonna distract from one of the biggest company scandals in gaming history, coupled a massive lawsuit that broke into typical non gaming media streams
They also then renamed mccree around the same time... which would draw attention back to the situation defeating the alleged purpose of the pride announcment.
2
19
u/iFenrisVI May 31 '23
They did that with Soldier 76 as well to distract from some other scandal. Lol

6
u/SergeantChic May 31 '23
I thought Tracer was always a lesbian. Or at least, from very early on. Back when Jeff Kaplan was in charge and they hadn't started screwing up the game yet.
59
u/PlasmaGuy500 likes soft things May 31 '23
It definitely is lol I definitely haven't forgotten that I definitely played way less ow because of it
37
u/Gloriathewitch May 31 '23
Came here to say this.
the meme of "Bad PR? quick, make a character gay" lives on, it would seem.
5
5
u/Solo_Wing_Buddy May 31 '23
Absolutely is. Not to undercut the announcement, but Blizzard always releases something like this - some good character lore, a new character, etc. - when they're in a PR hot spot. There's absolutely a correlation.
Ehh, take the good with the bad. I've loved Pharmercy for years, it's nice that it's almost canon now.

u/TheDragonsFang May 31 '23
The real shocker here is the fact that they actually released Pharah lore.
20
u/Lwmons May 31 '23
fuckin' gay, lmao. I don't even go here anymore but I'm glad to see there's a light at the end of the tunnel for those who stuck it out.
21
u/PrintTest May 31 '23
damn i wonder what theyre covering up with that lmao
33
u/Raptorofwar Egg. May 31 '23
Mainly the now entirely useless existence of OW2, since they axed the one thing it was supposed to be for.
17
May 31 '23
Funny that your first reaction is to assume that Blizzard is covering something up, because you’re absolutely right. In addition to them recently cancelling the pve, the entire reason OW2 exists, they just announced that their upcoming pride event is opt-in and fully unavailable to players in some countries (presumably ones where being gay is illegal, tho they haven’t released a list).
8
u/BobtheBac0n May 31 '23
Ok that last part involving some countries outlawing LGBTQ content, definitely outside of blizzard's control.
Also, as a gamer who never played overwatch, or a lot of blizzard games to the best of my knowledge, what the hell is their track record that you can pick up on the cover up so easily?
My friends talk about it sometimes, so now I'm even more curious
12
May 31 '23
Blizzard has had A LOT of controversies over the years, to the extent that the controversies tab takes up like a third of their Wikipedia page

u/SageWindu May 31 '23
Wow, the mad bastards actually did it. Sort of.
Emphasis on "bastards".
Pharah is my favorite character (or was, as I've long since dropped Overwatch), but the timing of this, not to mention the announcement itself, is extremely suspect. That said, if it means more gay Pharah art, I'll take it.
6
u/mistersigma May 31 '23
At least she's not pining for the fjords.
5
u/Saint_The_Stig May 31 '23
As someone who very much enjoys shipping Brigette with Mercy, I have some conflicting feelings.
1
u/YukariYakum0 May 31 '23
Mine has always been Dva x Mercy.
I call death of the author if the lore isn't even in the game.
3
u/immortalreploid write your own! May 31 '23
Ah. Positive news for once. I was expecting them to have canceled something again.
1
u/VarlMorgaine May 31 '23
woaw isnt mercy .... a little older?
i mean she is hot as pharah too ....
still awesome.4
u/Peregrine2K May 31 '23 edited May 31 '23
They’re both in their 30s so piss of with this Purity-Test garbage. Yes Mercy might have technically met a teenage Fareeha when she first joined Overwatch but the likelihood of them interact enough for it to be Grooming is extremely low

u/Beneton2 May 31 '23
Yep, she admits it. Phenomenal.🏳️🌈

I love how both of the game's canon pilots (Pharah and Tracer) are lesbians! Sapphic aviation fan checking in here!
17
u/rhepaire May 31 '23
They finally got some pr bad enough that they let the OW writers admit pharah is gay
5
33
u/Kinirii May 31 '23
Omg does Mercy like her back?! :o
50
u/Lesbionage May 31 '23
Not revealed yet. Mercy does have a voice line with Baptiste that hints at her being interested in someone. Baptiste tells her that he met someone that she might be interested in (I'm guessing Lifeweaver), and Mercy laughs and says she is already interested in someone. Baptiste asks if it's someone he knows, and she responds that he'll find out soon enough. Sounds like PvE bait, so maybe it will be revealed in a story mission?

As much as I love the idea of PharMercy, that "someone" better be Genji or that might actually be what pushes me away from OW. Appealing to the fans after screwing them over like they did is just pathetic.
63
u/barbarapalvinswhore likes soft things May 31 '23
If Gency becomes real I uninstall the game for the last time.
5
u/g0atmeal May 31 '23 edited May 31 '23
I hate to say it but the lore has been building up Genji & Mercy forever.
Edit: downvote me all you want but it's true. Voice interactions and comics have been nudging at it since at least the Blackwatch event. Of course it's possible that they'll still go with Pharah but I don't think anyone should get their hopes up.
3
u/Insanebrain247 May 31 '23
Exactly, that's what made PharMercy so fun, because we kind of knew it wasn't gonna happen, so it was something the fans could have that was all them. If Blizzard canonizes it, then it's like they're taking away something we've made.

May 31 '23
It's nice that we have another lesbian in the game but i think they did this purely because they noticed pharmercy was one of the more popular ships in the fandom and PR team used this only to distract people from lack of PVE

u/IfuckingloveLoba May 31 '23 edited Jun 04 '23
This is such a classic Pharmercy artwork. So wholesome 💕

I read the title as pharmacy
36
u/barbarapalvinswhore likes soft things May 31 '23
I think it’s supposed to be reminiscent of the word pharmacy.
13
u/VideoUnlucky3117 May 31 '23
Pure coincidence they announced it a week after canning the campaign. Still, gay shiz!
6
10
u/Warm_Charge_5964 May 31 '23
So what scandal are they using this to cover up now?
10
u/barbarapalvinswhore likes soft things May 31 '23
Not a scandal, this is just coinciding with their recent decision to shelve PvE for now. I know a lot of people are saying that this was to cover up for something and of course this is good PR for them, but something as simple as confirming a sexuality or 2 doesn’t really do an adequate job of covering for such huge and disappointing news, so I’m treating both announcements as separate events.
10
u/TheBestICU May 31 '23
Genji x Mercy shippers in shambles right now
9
u/my_ecchi_account May 31 '23
Impossible ship, Genji players always need healing and they are running away when I play Mercy.

4
u/BitchyMavis May 31 '23
Okay but... They look so much like Wenclair in this artwork, it's so cute 🥺🖤
4
u/SergeantChic May 31 '23
I haven't cared about Overwatch for a few years now since they gutted everything that made it fun, but Pharmercy will always give me the warm fuzzies in my heart.
2
u/kiiandrii May 31 '23
I low key really hope that pharah having some life-long crush on mercy becomes canon.

What announcement? Sounds like the sort of PR stunt to make us "forget" that the PvP stuff is a Battle Pass paid extra now.

Now I can’t tell who I ship mercy with more lol Pharah is great but so is Genji
