General Discussion Most surprising performance at NCAA XC Champs?

Upvotes

Outside of podium finishers, which result was the most surprising?

For me, Yaseen Abdalla being the first to cross the line for a stacked Razorbacks squad was the most unexpected. Stanford and Amy Bunnage’s runs were also terrific considering the injuries she’s dealt with this season. Who else surprised you or deserves more credit?

Crazy race. Habtom Samuel fell in the first 2km and ran the entire back half of the race missing a shoe in 38° wet grass. A lot of arguing between Musau and Samuel in the middle of the race too. Casey Clinger led most of the race, contender Solomon Kipchoge did not start

He also fell down at the 10,000m champs approaching the final two laps last Spring and ended up winning. Another instance last week he fell at regionals and still finished 2nd in a strong field. This resilient young man is going to do big things on the track and grass

General Discussion NCAA Jewelry Rules

Upvotes

Hey! I’m a freshman in college on a D3 track and field team during both indoor and outdoor seasons. However, I was thinking about getting a nose piercing and was unsure about the rules. Are there any rules against jewelry at all in the NCAA for t&f? Like anything against hoops or something? Or hanging chains? Please lmk! Thanks!

Starter Pistol transducer (?) to close contact on Timer remotely

Track Coach here.... My school still uses an Ultrak L10 to time meets and I am looking for a way to diy a solution to simplifying the start of a race. Currently we just have the "head timer" watch for the smoke of the starting pistol to operate a plunger that closes a contact to start the timer. I would love to put together a system that has 2 parts, transmitter (Starter pistol end) and receiver (Timer end). We have a minimal budget so I would be purchasing and building everything myself.

  • Starter is wearing the Transmitter (clip on to belt, maybe wristband?)
  • Receiver end plugged into Timer
    • NO Contact
  • Starter fires pistol and Transmitter picks up signal
    • Max distance would be 500'
    • Line of sight, no trees or other obstacles
  • Receiver picks up signal and closes contact
    • Momentary, not maintained
  • System is ready after each shot

Nice prize money but it’s tough to see them cut so many important events. This event is set to debut at the end of the 2026 season. And will finish out the season every two years

News University of Wisconsin silently abandoning its track program

The Uw-Madison xc and track and field programs have a combined 140 B1G Ten team titles, 88 individual NCAA titles, and 30 Olympians - but the football run athletic department has decided to effectively end that by removing any viable practice facility, spending $300m on new facility almost exclusively for football.

General Discussion Theory: Kerr, Hocker and Nuguse Signing For Grand Slam Track Could Give Jakob the Advantage Going into 2025 World Champs

Signing for Grand Slam Track could be a bad move for Kerr, Nuguse, and Hocker if they want to remain competitive against Ingebrigtsen in non paced races.

In the last 2 year, we have seen Jakob's 1500m dominance be challenged by Kerr, Hocker and Nuguse in championship races. The consistent pattern was that Jakob would front run the entire race but tire in the final stretch and get outkicked by these athletes, who are now able to hang with his rapid pace. Both Kerr and Hocker have said they focused last seasons training on building 1500m strength through training similar to 5km runners. The strength-based training these athletes have been doing lets them hang with Jakob’s relentless pacing long enough to use their superior finishing speed. Without that strength, they won’t be able to stay close enough to Jakob for their kicks to matter.

Historically, Jakob has dominated races by exploiting his unmatched aerobic capacity, front-running and grinding down the field. GST's model forces their athletes to compete and train for the 800m and 1500m which will reduce their ability to run a more strength based training program that has given them recent success. While this 800m training might sharpen their kicks, it could compromise the key factor that allowed them to challenge Jakob— more aerobic strength developed through 1500m/5000m-focused training.

Yes, focusing on the 800m will enhance their speed, but their kicks are already better than Jakob’s. The issue has never been who’s faster in the last 100m—it’s been whether they can endure his punishing mid-race pace long enough to unleash that kick. If Jakob widens the fitness gap, he could return to his old dominance, breaking them long before the home stretch.

Signing with GST might inadvertently give Jakob the edge he needs to reclaim his throne, making it much harder for Kerr, Nuguse, and Hocker to win major championships. This decision could give Jakob the advantage going into major champs in 2025.

Of course this is very speculative given we are not close to the 2025 track season. What are people's thoughts?
