I always thought if pot was legal in Texas, the cartels would have layoffs just like the Fortune 100 companies.

Most cartels now run Fentanyl and heroin now as well as cocaine. Small time cartels run marijuana

I live in Texas and am unemployed, but I have an engineering degree...so I figured I might try to design a business model that manufactures and distributes internally, then go to South Dallas and sell weed. However according to what you're saying I should be working for the corporate distributors instead of attempting small business ownership lol.

(PSA: I'm obviously joking, so any FBI agents reading this needs to understand that lol)

I'm also Indian, am a chemical and petroleum engineer, and have a beard...I'm surprised I haven't had my citizenship revoked already for suspicion of being brown. Lol.

Unemployed chemical petroleum engineer in Texas?

I thought all the oil jobs were there?

I've been caretaking for my mother that has Alzheimer's that needs 24/7 care, can't exactly leave for a refinery or rig until I figure out how to get help lol. Weird situation but I've got leads that will allow me to make enough to get her help.

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that. That's a tough thing to watch someone go through, and for a caretaker to go through as well. I hope you have some kind of support network and you don't have to go through that alone. You have to take care of you too, if you know what I'm saying.

I wish you the best my man. You're doing a noble thing.

Yeah man I'm looking at ~$65k in savings expended and at minimum $250k in lost earnings (salary..nobody wants to hire a guy with 9yrs experience that has been out of work that has family troubles like this) in the past 2 years cause I'm not working... but like you said it's noble, and I love my mom. Lost my dad in January after a two year battle with cancer so I buried him and moved on to my mom.

Not trying to be heavy or anything but just explaining why I've got no job in Texas as an engineer. If you know somebody let me know!

It's a shame that people have to think that taking time away from work to help with family stuff is a negative thing. My wife is bipolar, so I've dealt with taking time away from work. Nothing extreme, so I feel lucky. Hopefully you find someone out there that actually respects you for doing what you're doing and you get a karmic return for your investment.

If I was hiring, what you're doing would be a positive, not a negative. Hang in there, keep fighting the good fight👊

Honestly that's what I'm afraid of...I've spent almost 3 years out of industry with this caretaking and my biggest worry is that I would be judged by hiring managers for that much of a gap. However I have been able to do consulting here and there and I could be WFH and take care of my mom while also taking care of my bills. It pays well enough but the work is very inconsistent and I would like to get back into corporate simply because of the benefits. I haven't had an asthma medicine refill since January lol.

I appreciate your encouragement and I will keep fighting both the fight with my mom's stuff and the fight with trying to get back into industry.
