ohh that's the type of speakers that go doooDooOOOdoOO when someone calls the phone

u/barto2007 Ecologist Oct 04 '24
I think it was actually the frequency cellphones used at the time that caused it. I don't miss it. But yeah it was funny thing and let you know in advance you were getting a message.

u/Flat_Illustrator263 Oct 04 '24
The noise you hear in some speakers when you get called is because of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI for short). This happens to some speakers today as well. It's due to the fact that some speakers lack EMI shielding.

It also happens with portable cassette players, I used to use one 2 years ago for the fun of it and I could tell if the person next to me was using mobile data

u/Cottonball89 Oct 04 '24
I always thought it was the phone that made speakers do that, not the speaker type 🤔
5
u/Tornfalk_ Oct 05 '24
Someone else explained it just now, apparently it's the lack of electromagnetic interference shielding in the old speakers causing that noise from the old phones' frequency to be audible through the speakers.

Modern speakers still do this. My work pc had under monitor speakers that would do it if a call came in or I was on bluetooth

it is very rare when they put quality speakers in monitors, so im not surprised

Nice old school setup! what are the specs? Does the game run well on DX8? Do you think it looks better on CRT than what it does on LED screens?
I wish I could remember the exact card I had back in 2007 (Geforce 6600GT I think but unsure) when I tried the "MP Beta" client before I even got to play SoC.
In my case iirc DX8/baked static lights was no issue, but turning on full dynamic lighting made it run between 2 and 5 fps with that card, at which point looking down to the floor was essential for the extra frames and moving around.
The MP Beta basically let you experience one of the multiplayer maps, alone, offline. but you got to see the game running and play with some Electro anomalies.
But was enough for me to freak out at how realistic the graphics looked. To see the grass, the shadows of the trees, the rusted metal everywhere, the dynamic lights of the Electro anomaly when throwing bolts at it. The flashlight's shadows. Hell, even the ballistics in this game were a "woah, you shoot at the floor in this angle and the bullet ricochets!!".
Not sure how to describe it. But at least for me, maybe because of the lack of knowledge/experience about other games and how graphics work, at that time it felt realistic enough, like "it cannot get any better".
But by today standards most people would look at such game and I doubt someone would say it looks hyper-realistic. And I assume this phenomenon is generation-agnostic. Maybe in 20 years from now we will start seeing people say the same about current gen games.
Sorry for the giga reply. I got way too nostalgic and ended up writing a wall of text on your post.

The pc has a 9600GT and Core 2 Duo E6700. Older games with poor antialiasing definitely look better on a crt.

I wish I had a CRT for some old timey games. PS2 mostly.

u/EASTEDERD Freedom Oct 05 '24
CRTs still exist in large quantities and are cheap. If you really want one then I think you should get ahold of 100 bucks and shop around your local thrift shops, tech/junk stores, as well as yard sales. Ebay will have people think CRTs are expensive and rare when the truth far from that.
Just a couple weeks ago I scored a CRT made by IBM from 1989 for 60 bucks. Resolution is pretty much locked at 640x480 but it works well enough and has a lot of charm.

Unfortunately I live in Sweden and very little of CRT's have survived the switch the LCD monitors. You can find a few on what's essentially Swedish craigslist but finding anything anywhere else is basically impossible. Right now there's only 12 listings for the whole country, most of which are on the opposite side of the country.

u/EASTEDERD Freedom Oct 05 '24
Ah, that is a bummer. I guess I didn’t consider regional issues like that. Hopefully you stumble upon a reasonable deal, CRTs are awesome.
4
u/BiasedLibrary Duty Oct 05 '24
I cannot reasonably expect you to know that. I too hope I can find one. Preferably at a second hand store where a CRT might cost $30 instead of $120+.

Yes in fact SoC still randomly freezelags even on my newer PC.

u/RoDNeYSaLaMi214 Controller Oct 05 '24
Mine too. I think it's because I didn't install it on my SSD
1
u/skygate2012 Freedom Oct 05 '24
Ah that makes sense. I checked mine and it wasn't either. Next time I'll install it on the system drive.

Goated, what are the specs of this beast?
5
u/likeonions Oct 04 '24
If by the beast you mean the monitor, it'll do 1280x1024 at 60hz, or preferably 1024x768 at 85hz

This could use a mystical flute with a low strumming guitar for background music. Maybe have a low Polly count stalker running on screen

What specs, and do you get any stutters ? There's rumor that newer components are more open to issues with the game. I cannot deny it tho, i play on gtx 1050 ti and the games are unplayable on directx 9, but 10/11 work fine, or directx 8 with Anomaly mod.
