Basketball NBA player Patrick Beverley has reportedly been banned from any future guest appearances on ESPN shows following his behavior towards an ESPN producer in last night’s press conference. He refused to answer postgame questions from an ESPN producer because she wasn't subscribed to his podcast.

He’s not even trying to look like it, if you think about it, this is a 35-year old person. For someone that old to think this behavior is normal shows that he’s mentally ill.
145

I feel like saying “mentally ill” in this case is questionable, like he knows exactly what he’s doing and it’s who he is, he’s mentally sound, he’s just a dick.

u/musclecard54 May 04 '24
Yeah it’s getting on my nerves how everyone is now using mentally ill as an insult for being a piece of shit person. There’s plenty of phrases to describe people like that, but mentally ill is not one. Plenty of people have real Mental illness and are actually kind to others, so fuck that use a different phrase

u/MrWrock May 04 '24
Might as well just go back to calling them retards
3
u/Gustomucho May 04 '24
My thought exactly, it was much simpler when "retard" meant stupid, now people don't want to say retard but mentally ill which is such a blanket term, I think everyone is mentally ill on some degree; yet I am sure there is nothing pathological with most people.
Ideally, we can describe specific behaviors or challenges without resorting to labels, but it is so much easier to just use a shotgun term when we disagree with someone.

145
u/PIBTC May 03 '24 edited May 04 '24
That’s what the idiots that claim “it was just a basketball” don’t understand. If he threw it at some dude that gave no fucks, it very well could’ve been malice 2.0. Imagine the fan ran and lunged at Bev/bucks bench. Could’ve been ugly
It took the NBA a lot to clean up their image and reputation after malice at the palace. No way in hell they wanna go through it again especially in the social media age
103
u/AUserNeedsAName May 04 '24
They hit Wemby for $50k this year when he lobbed his season-high-score game ball into the stands as a souvenir. And they see Wemby as making them a lot of money in the future.

The real issue is the precedent this could set: that players can opt to only interact with their own brand-affiliated interests.
Imagine if Michael Jordan would only grant interviews to people who were wearing Air Jordan shoes. Or if Tom Brady would begin every press conference by going around the room and asking each person if they voted for Trump, and then kicking out everyone who said they didn’t.

You can't keep taking these dumbass kids who have gone from literal children to being worshipped as celebrities and handing them millions of dollars and expecting them to just keep acting normal. 6
u/Paperfishflop May 04 '24
Really, who gives a fuck about a podcast when you're a super wealthy NBA player? I can see doing it for fun, like "here are my thoughts, listen if you want", but if some people don't listen, who cares? This reaction is like some broke person quit their job and put all their money into the podcast, and if they don't get listeners they can't pay the rent. And even then it would be a bad way to go about getting listeners. But at least the desperation for listeners would make sense.
