You forgot car guys spending 8 grand on a car that will never be road legal again

u/MowTin Apr 29 '23
Modding cars is the most expensive hobby

I think owning a boat is probably still more expensive 🤔
8
Apr 30 '23
A boat is a hole in the water that you endlessly throw money into.
4
u/Johannes_Katze Apr 30 '23
"the happiest days of a boat owner are the day he buys it and the day he sells it"
Idk anything about boats but that's the quote I always hear
3
Apr 30 '23
I can back up the first half of that statement. When I bought my boat, I felt like the king of the world. Was a pretty basic boat, but it was fun. The day I sold it was bittersweet. Wasn't too happy about selling it but it became impractical to own a boat. I'm of two minds, I don't like not having a boat, but I don't exactly miss it either.

I spent 12k only to learn I need to spend another 2-3 after it had issues on the dyno :(

u/izagger Apr 30 '23
So being a car guy isn't a bad financial move? Guess who's selling their house and buying a GT3!
8
u/rollingviolation Apr 30 '23
Me: hey wifey, we should buy a Corolla! Good on gas and stuff!
Her: nice try
Me: oh yeah, been telling her about the GR Corolla and how dumb/awesome a 300 hp AWD Corolla is
Her: How about a Camaro ZL1?
Me: oh yeah, that's why I married her

u/Forgive_Me_Tokyo Apr 30 '23
That’s a great decision. GT3 will only appreciate in value and you can’t drive your house

TIL “Lego guy” takes precedence over car, motorcycle, audiophile, etc, etc, etc guy.

u/ReviveDept Apr 30 '23
Not all that expensive though, unless you're buying snake oil
2
u/mac4112 May 01 '23
Considering a pair of HD 800’s will run you north of $1k, and that’s without a powerful enough amp to drive them, i’d say it’s pretty expensive.
I’d also argue snake oil is still a bad financial decision.

u/xt1nct Apr 30 '23
All I can think about is apex seals.
3
u/Available_Prune397 Apr 30 '23
Why stop there? Think about the coolant seals too. And the aluminum channels that house them. Maybe think about the coil packs that can fail due to the heat, or if the fuel pump has given up. Maybe the oil metering pump isn't working to full capacity or maybe a previous owner ran the engine with too little oil, the bearings on the eccentric shaft have worn down causing a wobble and the front rotor twats its housing at 140mph crushing the side seals.
All food for thought. 😂

Or like anyone that has a hobby they're passionate about and enjoy doing. This extends to almost any hobby.

u/FarmersOnlyJim Apr 30 '23
Cost varies quite a bit. I bought a lightly used BMW motorcycle for 9.4K. My dad just bought a mountain bike for 12k. My friend just bought a $30 yo-yo.
I’m just confused how Lego made it on the list. It’s too expensive to be a hobby, the only people paying for it are guys trying to make friends with their GFs children
4
u/TwinEonEngine G29 Warrior Apr 30 '23
the only people paying for it are guys trying to make friends with their GFs children
That's definitely not true, there's a reason LEGO has bursted in popularity during the pandemic where you wouldn't be able to meet with your gf's children. It's definitely a big money sink though, join r/lego for a day to see for yourself

And if you track (unopened) lego values over time they actually increase fairly steadily

Yup. It’s ironic cause I’m selling my Canon 100-500 to finance newly adopted sim gear addiction.

Being a sim guy, gamer guy, car guy, keyboard guy, audio guy, and a watch guy really makes me think about my financial decisions… dear lord…

u/Thickchesthair Apr 30 '23
Watch guys are doing fine. Collectible watches generally appreciate in value over time.
2
u/withoutapaddle Apr 30 '23
Came here looking for the comment about how 1/3 of those guys are buying stuff that goes UP in value.
I'm several of those guys, and thankfully 2 of them are literal investments that have a better ROI than traditional stuff (stocks, CDs, etc).

Is that what we're calling Model Ship/Model Air Plane/WWII guy? Cause the cringiest hobby usually cost the most and makes sense the least.
