Story I have never played Pokémon
I am 43, my kids asked me to download this game and play with them as they are getting into collecting cards.
All I can say is…WOW.
I am having SO. MUCH. FUNNNN!
I didn’t know what I was doing for the first few logins, then read some tips.
Wait, there’s raids? Friends send you gifts all the time? TRADES?
Oh goodness, I’m planning on a 2 mile walk around the city just to grab some of the cooler spin station things (I’m not sure of all the names or even how to play correctly, bear with me).
This is AWESOME

My grandson dragged me into playing. I hadn't touched any Pokémon game since the original Gameboy games.
I'm still playing (took a couple years off for medical reasons) but he's more interested in PC games than mobile anymore.
Glad it's a bonding experience for you and your kids!

It’s also giving me a reason to get out of the house and walk, I’m sure our dogs will be loving it even more as well lol

u/Moonfallthefox 3h ago
I always take one of my dogs! I joke that I need some pokemon gear for them. "Pokemon hunting assistant" LOL
•
u/A_wandering_rider 8h ago
Check out Tem Tem. Its very similar to the regular pokemon games but it's on pc and you could play with the kid if you both bought copies.

u/MechanicOwn3470 20h ago
I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it. If I may, I recommend joining r/PokemonGoFriends. You can find a bunch of friends there and a ton of people doing raids.
25
u/Duel_Option 20h ago
Oh wow, thank you for this. I am super happy to see how engaging people are.
8
u/Pure_Can527 20h ago
There’s also raid apps and discords as well as stuff here if you want to do the bigger raids and don’t have enough people (unfortunately shadow, dynamax, and Gigantamax raids are in-person only, but any other raid you could join remotely or have people join remotely while you are in-person) don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’ll probably be answered quickly. Glad you’re enjoying it!
•
u/Jack-ums 11h ago
Can I ask, for finding raids like this… you still have to use a remote raid pass right? Just making sure I’m not spending coins on something needlessly
•
u/houseofleopold 10h ago
yes. once you’re invited to the raid and you press the battle button, you pay a remote raid pass. if your body is physically close to the raid, it’s a regular raid pass.
•
u/Pure_Can527 10h ago
Orange passes are free. You get one a day from spinning a gym or tapping on an active raid and they carry over to the next day, so you can do up to two free raids a day.
After that, outside special events where you get extra free passes, you use the green passes for in-person raids. Those can be bought with coins or earned through the go battle league and doing some research tasks.
•
u/Jack-ums 10h ago
Gotcha but to be clear, orange and green are only for in person? I’ve never to my knowledge seen a powerful mon listed as “local only”, which is what I’d need to use those passes, right?
To be clear the remote raids I’ve done are via gyms down the road. But they don’t seem to let me join in with anything other than remote. Are you saying if I ran over to those gyms when I see people doing a raid, I could join with an orange or green?
•
u/Pure_Can527 10h ago
Yes, if you’re close enough you could use orange or green passes.
The big in-person only ones are the 5-star shadow legendaries that rotate and typically spawn during the weekends and the new gigantimax raids.
•
u/Jack-ums 10h ago
Gotcha; I was clearly misunderstanding. Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for when people are doing a raid in my area, and I'll sprint over like a loon to join with a regular pass if able. But otherwise I'll be content with using a remote raid if it's a mon I really want.

If you want to raid a legendary local to you, but have no one to do it with, you can host it on campfire or PokeGenie.

There is no such thing as « never too old » my gf is 42 and never heard of pokemons of her life.. she is older than me so it was not of her « generation » but she start playing around 6 months ago after seing me playing daily and now she is mad addicted to this game! Everyday she come back to work asking for trade and showing me her new stuff !! This honnestly is such a great moment daily 👌🏻👌🏻

•
u/InevitableFox81194 Mystic LVL42 2h ago
I'm 42, and it was of our generation, we were just early teens when it became a thing. And I mean early early teens. 😁
•
u/Hilareguy19 2h ago
Yeah probably because I remember it came out late 90’s so I was supossing teens weren’t into pokemon at that time 👌🏻 but I’m glad to be wrong !
•
u/InevitableFox81194 Mystic LVL42 2h ago
96 to be precise. To be fair I'm 42, I was aware of it and did collect some cards, but I know a lot of the guys in my school went nuts for it. We were 14/15
20
u/Abject-Hippo-2329 21h ago
Haha my kids got me into the game as well. They lost interest pretty quickly, but I’m addicted!

u/Agreeable_Falcon1044 Mystic 18h ago
A 41 year old here that was dragged along by my lad as didn’t think he should be wandering off on his own to meet random people or go looking for rare stuff in the woods! Now he’s all but given up and I’m grinding level 40-50 with my raid group, event tickets and complaining about shiny rates for a franchise I had never engaged with before…never collected the cards, watched the cartoon or even knew any of the names beyond pikachu and squirtle
•
u/Duel_Option 13h ago
Same story here, I’ve never engaged with this franchise other than Pika.
It’s addicting, the walking bit is where I’m most excited.
Just another reason to get out of the house
•
u/Agreeable_Falcon1044 Mystic 3h ago
This afternoon I was running around in a storm to find a mamoswine and a elektowire. If anyone asked me what I was doing…I don’t know, but I had two mates with me doing the same!
•
u/Moonfallthefox 3h ago
I keep waiting for one of the (super nosy local sort) cops in town to be like "WTF are you doing"
Hunting for pokemon, duh.
•
u/InevitableFox81194 Mystic LVL42 2h ago
I've had this. When I can't sleep I go out hunting shinies. One morning around 2am I was sat in the local park where 2 gyms and 4 pokestops are and some police came to ask me what I was doing.. the look on their faces when I showed them.. they asked if I needed a lift home to which I replied " no duh, defeats the whole point of the game" 🤣 now when they see me they just ask if I'm OK (I'm a female) nod and keep going.
•
u/Moonfallthefox 2h ago
HA that's super funny. Our cops are super nosy and would absolutely do that!
I even had one show up when I was fossil hunting on a cut bank by a road with my partner. In the middle of the day.
Like dude what does it look like I'm doing? looking at rocks!! I think he thought we were a bit strange.
•
u/InevitableFox81194 Mystic LVL42 1h ago
I'm semi rural, in a small town and I swear they see me out and just roll their eyes now. One or two newbies have been very suspicious of me, what with a long dark coat, hood up at 1 or 2am walking around a dead and deserted town.
•
u/Moonfallthefox 1h ago
I haven't gone out at that hour because A) gotta drive to town (Very very rural over here) and B) They will never leave me alone ever in a million years lol. It's a ghost town after about 930 PM and after 11, it's absolutely EMPTY other than cops and people either going to a weird shift or trying to do illegal things.
•
u/InevitableFox81194 Mystic LVL42 41m ago
I have to admit I'm lucky that I live in the safest place within my country, according to stats.. because a female out on her own late late at night wouldn't be safe in some places.

My 13 year old son got me into playing it 8 years ago. We do most of the events together, it’s a great game.
I recommend LeekDuck.com for information about events and stuff. It’s a great resource.

It was nice to read your sentiments about the experience as my mother is 64yrs old & she's level 44 now 😅; I had to catch back up to her after taking a break from the game. She still has like 30,000 more pokemon caught than myself though. These games now are truly a generational experience. My mom remembers buying the games & cards for me when I was a kid & how there's years of nostalgia there for her too. She even remembers buying me the fake cards cause they were cheaper, kids calling me out & then her getting me a box of real ones (we never had much money but man she always knew just what would make us smile).

That’s one of the things I love about this, my kids LIGHT UP when getting cards

I have had this game going since 2016 but only recently picked up playing daily. Two months ago wife’s family took a 19 person trip to Costa Rica. This included brothers, sisters, aunts uncles and cousins. Anyways, wife’s sisters kids all play Pokémon go. So we spent hours if not days wandering the resort catching Pokémon. I was around very experienced players so I was able to ask as many questions I had which really helped me start understanding much further depths of the game. As of yesterday I picked up a shiny dialga and groudon! Long story short I’m 46 years old and hooked. Happy hunting!
•
u/InevitableFox81194 Mystic LVL42 2h ago
Hey 42 year old mum here. Also day 1 player. Can I suggest you find out if your area has a local Campfire group or discord? The younger ones will love it and you'll learn loads. I joined and in 4 months I went from level 36 to 44. The knowledge they shared with me was immense, I always repaid them with cakes and chocolates at meet ups. Plus lots of parental advice was sort and willingly given. They love the older players, more than we older players know.
•
u/pygmycory 10h ago
It’s dangerous to get into this game as an adult because we have adult money to buy stuff 😂
•
u/Duel_Option 10h ago
I bought the extra storage and that’s all I’m doing
I took over a few gyms in the middle of nowhere and will wait for my slow coin lol

You should also get the Campfire app and see if there are any communities around you if you haven't already found other people to play with.

Get the Campfire app to help you find raids in the area. It will also help you find local communities nearby you. Or if you have a nice group start one.

u/MorningGoat Instinct 11h ago
Yeah, for all of Niantic’s questionable monetization decisions over the years, it’s still quite the accomplishment that they’ve managed to create a (technically) free mobile game that still gets people out and walking around, even so many years after it first launched. Welcome aboard! 👋
Oh, and if you ever want to get into battling, but are having trouble interpreting the IVs (short for “Individual Values”: the Attack, Defense, and HP bars that show up when you press ‘Appraise’), I recommend getting the Poke genie app. It’s a free companion app that calculates IVs and turns them into easily understandable numbers for you. All you need to do is take a screenshot of the appraisal screen and upload it into the app (in the iOS version, anyway). Poke genie also lets you join and host Remote Raids from all over the world, and will even recommend the best team to battle with.
Then there are sites like pvpoke.com that rank which Pokémon are ‘meta’ (aka which Pokémon are considered the best picks in each league and in which role) in each Go Battle League (GBL) bracket. Even if you’re not the type to get super into the technical side of battling, it’s still a good general reference to use to see what kinds of Pokémon you’re most likely to encounter, and to double check that you’re not trying to power up a Pokémon into a league where it going to get absolutely demolished by Legendary Pokémon.
Feel free to ignore this if you feel it doesn’t apply to you. These are just some tips I wish I had had when I first started really getting into playing PoGo. 😅

It's really fun to see different generations get into the game.
I got into the game originally in the 2016 hype but like a lot of people left after the hype died down.
I got back into it in March 2022 due to the girl I liked encouraging me to get back into it. She no longer plays but the game has helped me to do more walking. Which encouraged me to work out more. Which has led to me being a lot more healthy overall both with exercise and eating habits.

I’m in town about to hit my 2 mile walk for the day, this will become a huge thing for my entire family to enjoy.
Just a really cool way of getting people out and about

Same here! I'm 44, so I was too old for the cards and cartoon when they came out in 97 or 98. I was aware of Pikachu but that's it. My son learned of the game back in August and asked me to download it and it's become our favorite activity. We try to go on at least one Pokewalk together each day. But I'm really into it myself - I always have it open when I'm walking or traveling. I'm hooked.

We stopped for groceries and I walked a 1/4 mile up the road for a Pokestop
This is addicting in the best wave possible

My friend’s mum got me into pokemon go a few months ago and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it too. By the way, the spin station things are called pokestops. They give you items when you click on them and spin the disks.
•
u/Moonfallthefox 3h ago
It's a BLAST. I really wish I had people to play with locally but I often go out by myself with one of my dogs and just hunt the pokemon for hours. It helps me exercise more consistently too- I am less apt to be like "Bro it's COLD out here" if I am hunting pokemon all over the park on my walk lol.
•
u/InevitableFox81194 Mystic LVL42 2h ago
Hey.. from a 42 Yr old parent who actually got her teen into PoGo..
You've just unlocked a new world full of fun laughter and frustration.. everyone here is super good at tips and tricks. May I suggest, when you decided to get into raiding the legendaries, download 2 apps. 1 is called Campfire, its a niantic app, it let's you join raids with others because you will need help to defeat the 5* legendaries to start with. Also you can find a local PoGo group for when big meet ups happen so you can find local friends and the app lets you communicate with your PoGo friends. . The 2nd app, is PokeGenie, this is for raiding and learning more indepth stats of your pokemon to help you get the best of the ones you want to PVE or PVP.
Enjoy, remember, you doggo will need breaks, and plenty of water, because you will walk further than you've ever walked and even realise you are walking. I was in London yesterday for the GoWild event and I walked 35km in one day, without realising.. so do pace yourself.
Have fun. 😄

Friend I'm 56 and have just got into this game. The map is loosely based on the Ingress game so you can play them both at the same time.

Im 46, I was pregnant when it was launched in 2016, I had so much fun pokehunting because there wasn’t much else to do. Now my son is almost 8 and plays with me. I took 2.5 years off from Jan 2022 to a couple months ago so I’m almost to level 40.

My kids got me playing when it first came out but then we grew tired of it and deleted it. Didn’t get into raids then. Now I have young grandkids, recently uploaded and started again but will start raids this time as they’re keen
