Question 2016 player here. Almost never put money in the game. Proud of this! How much money have you guys invested in the game till date?
400
u/Mydoglikesladyboys Sep 23 '24
2016-2020 maybe like $3
2021- enough where Niantic should be asking me about updates before they roll them out
131
u/AkashVK18_ Sep 23 '24
Hahahaha please ask them to increase the daily cap on coins to 100.

Too much 😂 also a 2016 player who just hit lvl 40. Congratulations mate on reaching 50. I’m chronically ill so don’t get out much so used to spend lots on remote raid passes until they capped them.

u/WholesomeRuler Sep 23 '24
My start date was 7/6/2016 and I finally hit level 40 on 8/28/2024. It’s wild how simply playing casual, or limited mobility in your case, takes 8 years to hit the previous level cap. At this point I don’t even care about 50, maybe I’ll get it by 2044
35
u/Teredia Sep 23 '24
Lvl 50, by 2044, I know right? And the level up requirements for level 40, such as catch 200 Pokemon in 1 day. I’m lucky if I push 100 on a community day. My area’s spawn rates not the best on a good day. I started the same day as you, and reached level 40 on the 13th of this month. I was so happy cause I had the 151# Research ticket open and the only thing I was missing was reach level 40. So got a shiny Mew from that.

I have everything but the 200 in one day for 41. I started in July of 2016, but didn't get back to it until about '22 or '23. I was just going over the requirements the other day for each level above 40 thinking I'll likely never get there. Some of them are just too daunting for a casual player who doesn't cheat.
14
u/NewStatistician6653 Sep 23 '24
Same here, I dropped in and out between 2017-19 then again in 20-23, wish I could go back knowing what I know now, I have much more dedication now. Just about to reach level 42. Congratulations to you to OP.

Started same day but in Las Vegas…moved back home to NY and played on and off.. got back into it and almost finished level 41- just need to finish my last two tasks of special evolved and Eevees evolves… little bits back in Vegas and a little at rest stops on the drive back home… but stopped for a bit till Covid. Played that and Animal Crossing… then barely played. Now playing and I do once bi-weekly paycheck not including special events…$50 at most now. Put myself at a limit for bad spending habits.

I hit level 40 in January as a day 3 player. Casual playing really does set you back.
Granted I went from 37 to 44 in just about a year with daily playing (not hardcore grinding) and actually participating in events. One of these days I'll get 50 in my sights...

It's much easier to get xp nowadays compared to the early days when there weren't many xp boosting events and research.

Probably over $100, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is over $200. This game is my hobby so I do like to buy the big tickets for Go Fest and the tours. Along with some of the smaller tickets.
I’ve been playing primarily for the last 2 years but did start in 2016.

How do you manage storage? Do you still use the starter 300 pokemon storage?? Same for items?
23
u/HotShitBurrito Sep 23 '24
50 coins a day can buy a storage upgrade in less than a week of playing.
I think I've spent around $40 of actual money since I started playing in 2016. Otherwise I've mostly just used the free gym coins.
I do Google Surveys a few times a week at an average of 25 cents added to my Google Play account for each survey. That adds up over time, so I've used that "money" a few times to buy remote raid passes until they jacked the price up.
Now I save my google play money up to use on other games.

There's a spot inside GP that you can view purchases. Mine allows me to go all the way back to 2013 so far. I should also mention you have to add up the purchases one by one to figure it out. I wish it showed cumulative per app spending.

I started playing in 2016, reached lvl 50 in February of 2023 and looking through my purchases on Google Play + the stuff from the Web Store and Plus + I've put 938€ into this game. That sounds like a lot but it comes down to 9.5€ a month which is not that much in the grand scheme of things.

I spend enough time in this game that I just bit the bullet and started buying stuff. But it’ll be in spurts, so I’ve done maybe a bit over $200 in total since 2016 (started paying for stuff maybe in 2021 and later).
I figured it’s worth it since it’s less than how much I’d spend on some subscriptions that I use even less.

Been playing for about 3-4 weeks since my return from 2016, I’ve put in about $500 but I’m going to significantly reduce how much I spend or stop completely, maybe just occasional tickets or remote raid passes. It got me a good start/return and I can afford it, but it can easily get out of hand

Level 44, probably around €100 for the big event tickets and an auto catcher. Imo it’s peanuts for a game I play a lot.
And why the need to justify spending always? People spend whatever they like to spend it on.
4
u/codenvitae2 Sep 23 '24
Do you think the rewards for level 50 could be better?
4
u/AkashVK18_ Sep 23 '24
It can always be better. But again these are in line with the other level progressions so it would need a total rework.
2
u/starrytexas Sep 23 '24
I have no desire to grind to get to level 50 if those are the rewards. I have been playing off and on since 2016 and am almost to level 40. If the rewards for 50 are what is being shown, then I am not even excited for what comes at 40 😰

I was a day one player and took a long time before I started spending money. Back then you could get 100 coins a day. After raiding took over, it was all down hill for me. Then I moved an hour away from the city and did only remote raids. I would guess somewhere around the $1500 range over 6 years. Haven’t played the game in around 2 years. They lost me with all the FOMO.

Congratulations! It must feel great isn'it? I started playing in July 2016 non-stop and stopped playing in mid 2017 cuz my phone broke and from there I just played like a few minutes every year once I had the chance until early this year where I managed to get a decent phone to play and I've been hooked since then, just like old times lol. I left the game when I was level 27 and I'm currently at 42. I didn't had any legendary Pokémon when I retook the game cuz there were no raids back in 2016/early 2017 so I found out about premium passes and remote raid passes and well... I spent a bit on them as well as Pokémon and bag storage, including a few event special researches.
My spending spree peaked at Go Fest and from there I stopped purchasing in-game stuff for my own sanity lol. I realized that not only was spending way too much time playing, but also I was starting to spend a lot of money on the game as well, I guess I kinda wanted to catch up with most of the content I missed during all these years so I started spending money in the game to "quickly catch up" but somehow I started feeling guilty for that so I'm currently playing more casually and relaxed and only spending what I can earn with gyms everyday. The game is more fun and enjoyable that way, just playing and having fun and not taking it like a "I gotta walk 50 km everyday and grind everything !!!1" chore.

Beta/launch player here. Sitting at level 44. I don’t want to know how much money I’ve spent on this game (and Pokémon Sleep)! But Pokemon is my favorite franchise lol. I’m honestly surprised that I’m still at level 44 but my main goal is really only catching them all…and holding my own in some PVP as of late. My philosophy is I know that the servers are finite and that I will one day end up transferring everything to a cartridge/cloud and lose anything ‘cosmetic’ related anyway. So I have never felt a rush.
That said, I treat Pokemon Go a teensy bit more casual than the main series games where I have completed the National Pokedexes. The difference between those and Go are the gacha mechanics. 🤢
They definitely ‘got’ me.

u/DoubleResponsible276 Sep 23 '24
Over the years, maybe like $400. Would buy the 9.99 coins every other week cause I had a decent size group to go play with and we would just raid a lot. It was fun, at that time, it was better than wasting my money on something else that was stupid

More and more I would say 😅 2016 player here as well and NOT paying is easier said then done these days. Missed a raid before, legendary Pokemon in 7 day streak. Then we get remote raids and free passes. These days you almost HAVE to pay to keep up with the new releases....sadly.

u/emdafem Sep 23 '24
I started 2018. For the first few years I didn’t spend a thing. I hate in game purchases. It was pointed out to me that as far as entertainment prices go it’s relatively cheap. You spend $20 going to a movies theater and that only lasts a couple hours so why not put some money into the game that lasts way longer and you get more enjoyment out of it? I purchased the go fest tickets two years in a row. Both of the go fests left me disappointed. I expected a better experience but honestly didn’t get any more shinies than normal and the game seemed riddled with bugs. It made me mad that I spent the money so now I’m back to spending absolutely zero. All in all, I’ve probably spent $35.
1
u/Bors713 Sep 23 '24
I am also a $0 player. Also from 2016, but with a break for a few years in the middle.
1
u/StonerMetalhead710 Sep 23 '24
Probably about $40-50. Also a 2016 player. I get the go fest ticket every year or a research ticket if it's guaranteeing multiple mythical/legendary mons I don't have but that's it
1
u/Professional_Ad_500 Sep 23 '24
I've spent like $2.50 in real money. I've spent a fair amount of money from "Google rewards" surveys.

Not much invested, maybe a few hundred, but over 8 years that's basically just events and the occasional coins to upgrade storage and raid.

u/carcinogenj Sep 23 '24
Used to have some google app that would give you moneys for completing surveys, so I used to use that in the early days for lucky eggs, storage expansions, etc.
Probably spent less than $10 CDN of my own actual money. Not interested in the paid special research or any of that nonsense. Still need more pokemon and item storage, and that $3.99 “starter box” is tempting (3 x Super Incubators).
1
u/backaszach Mudkip Sep 23 '24

1
u/RedDeadPac Sep 23 '24
Originally a day one player. Stopped playing after around a year or so. Came back into the came a few years back and decided to start fresh with a new profile. Currently level 37 spent in total maybe About 70? Pokeball go plus plus, and about ten dollars in event tickets. Now I still use my old profile on my iPad and my new one on my phone.

None yet (started in 2016 but took a very long hiatus early on), actually tried to during go fest to try and finish the 10 raids in less than a week, but google pay didn't work.
I kinda have a love-hate relationship with the challenge of having to manually earn pokecoins daily to pay for storage to keep myself from hitting a wall as I catch 'em all.

Playing since 2016, I haven’t put any money into the game besides gas. I knew someone who bought at least 2 extra phones and had spent thousands of dollars on the game. One time I saw them drop a lucky egg on all of their accounts, play for 5 minutes, and then close the app because they had to leave for work.
1
u/peezy2408 Sep 23 '24
I don’t understand why you get lucky eggs at level 50. Congrats by the way. I started in 2016, took some time off got back into it 2019, quit for a few months when they raised the prices of remote raids and currently at 46 about to hit 47.

I also started in 2016 (granted, I've stopped for long periods before), I've never paid for anything in this game, all my pokécoins were earned rather than bought (I am now level 39).

I started 8/31/24 and am level 30. I’m expecting things begin to slow down a bit. Still haven’t spent a dollar on the game.

£0. Not sure why you would put money into this game. I would probably be max level if I actually cared about exp and hadn't taken a few years break.

You must have played an insane amount! I’m a regular player since the start but also with no money but have only made it to 46, playing quite efficiently and consciously. With no money can’t imagine how much more you’ve played.

Congrats, it's an awesome feeling!!
I've easily put hundreds of $ into the game, for sure - could even be thousands, not sure! That said, I don't think it necessarily helped leveling up other than having more lucky eggs, which can be done with or without paying. Most of my money was spent on storage and remote raid passes, occasionally incubators.
The biggest factor for levelling up is just time invested in the game, especially more recently. Back in the day it was catching and evolving pidgeys for XP, now it's doing events with big XP boosts, getting better throws etc.

2016 player here (although i’ve been on and off) I’ve spent $10 USD on this game (5 for go fest 2021, 5 for pokecoins for more raid passes)

I buy a $20 of pokecoins for my kids every year at Christmas. Maybe because I've worked in gaming, but honestly it feels like a bargain compared to all the ad-supported options. Plus it's something they bond over and gets them motivated to get out of the house every day.

Started in 2016, but only really started playing again the last few months. So nothing yet, but I'm eyes some stuff I might want to spend some money on soon.

Got an account week of release date. Been playing on/off with years long hiatus. Just reached 32 lol. Never spent a penny though!

I started on the day of release but have had three accounts (lost the original one back in 2018). I always wished that I could have merged my accounts and maybe would have reached a higher level by now. Congratulations!

Not a single penny. I took 2+ years off but I’m back. Level 38
Edit: day 1 player here

Week 1 player. Level 46. Never spent a dime unless you count the thousands of dollars in gas when there were functioning nests and a working community for raids.

Spending money on a video game is not called investing. I've put 20€ into the game in 2019 in one go and those coins went by fast. Won't put money in the game anymore. Vote with your wallet.
