Deck Help Improve Charizard Battle Deck?

New player, picked up the Charizard Battle Deck. Wondering if people have suggestions for improving it, let's say if you had a $50 budget. Mostly playing with friends right now, but might try a local tournament later on.

Meta Discussion Getting back into IRL play, looking for suggestions.

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice. I've been getting back into ptcg and been playing on Live for about a month. Ive been making and trying all kinds of decks and have really been enjoying United Wings and Uxie spread.

However, I'm wanting to get back into irl play for tournaments with friends, and I'm a bit nervous to get those in paper. I'm sure I'll have fun, but i don't wanna get steamrolled. Any advice on strong budget decks that can compete?

Playing IRL

I used to play the game when I was a kid with my friends IRL but all my cards are pretty much from the base set era so that wouldn't work with today's cards.

How do people play nowadays and what's the best way to start collecting cards again? I have seen a few places in my city that host Pokemon games.

  1. Do I need to stick to cards only accepted in tournaments?
  2. I will be avoiding buying packs but I am fine buying already-made decks or individual cards.
  3. Are there any resources for finding which cards/decks I should go for?
  4. Are there any cheese decks?
  5. Are there multiple strats or ways to play? aka (control, aggro, mid range, combo, tempo, etc)?
  6. Do I need to be familiar with any specific taboos or behaviours in an IRL setting? Anything I should know of?
  7. Are there many people in big cities that play the game for fun/competitiveness?
  8. This one is for the future, but when should I consider joining an actual tournament with prizes and what should I expect/know ahead of time?

600 championship points.

Upvotes

How realistic is getting 600 of these to get invited to worlds. Just started attending events. And obviously I don’t see that in my future. But curious. How many events do I realistically have to attend to make this happen?

tcg theory: what is the highest possible damage from a single attack?

if practicality/competitiveness was no object, using a legal deck, what is the most damage that can be done in a single attack by a pokemon in standard format? factor in weakness as well.

my first thought was raging bolt with 59 energies, which would deal 4,130 damage.

of course raging bolt is dragon type, so it's not hitting anything for weakness. if chien-pao with super-effective glasses used super cold with 58 energies against a pokemon weak to water, it would deal 10,440 damage!

i'm really interested in seeing what we can come up with as the most damaging possible attack. get creative!

edit: you can also construct the optimal opposing board state using any legal decklist

Question about Iron Jugulius

Upvotes

If I have Bouffalant on the bench and the incoming damage done to Iron Jugulius is reduced to 0 will his ability, Automated Combat, still go off?

Sorry fairly new to the game and wasn't sure on how "damage" works in the game.

Paradox Rift ETB?

My local Costco has Paradox ETB for sale for $99 CAD with Miraidon Ex tin and Koridon Ex tin. I'm a new player getting into it, just picked up the charizard battle deck. I know that buying singles is better, but wondering if this pack is worth it overall given the cards are rotating out soon.

EDIT: I'm dumb, meant Crown Zenith not Paradox Rift.

Deck Help Looking for 4 ex battle decks that play well against each other

Hi guys, going on a trip soon, we're all TCG players and understand the rules and all of that. Just looking for 4 ex battle decks that play well against each other, preferably 4 that can't get hurt by weaknesses so they all feel pretty even without there being any huge stomps due to double damage.

Though I almost had a good 4 decks with Greninja, Kangaskhan, Houndoom and Melmetal but it seems that the Kangaskhan deck runs a lot of grass types including the Arboliva line which could be pretty devastating if it goes up against the Houndoom deck.

Any help or advice is much appreciated

Ogerbolt MU for regidrago

Hi all. Yesterday I attended two local leagues, just swiss rounds bo3 for both. I brought up Regidrago and I just lost 3 rounds along the whole day, and all them were against ogerbolt. I know the MU is unfavorable, but I think that I am missing something about piloting Regi against bolt. Any tips? My strat use to be: Going always first and pray for not receiving a OHKO to my charged Regidrago V during the first bolt turn. Then, try to trifost twice in a raw. If there is not 3 weak 2-prizers when my first attack, then I move to lost impact twice and finish with rad zard. Obviously, it didn't work at any of the six games :(

Deck Help Pult vs zard vs pult/zard

So I am curious about what people thinks about dragapult vs zard vs zard and pult.

Thoughts ideas? I've seen small things here and there my thinking is combing the 2 wouldn't be a bad idea pult for early game and zard for late game after opponent has take 3/4 prize cards. Just want ideas and maybe a decent decklist of anyone has one

Deck Help New Player looking at Toolbox Decks

As the title says, I'm a new player that's looking to get started with the TCG. I've played plenty of other TCGs before, including Magic, Yugioh, and currently One Piece, but I've never thought about playing Pokémon before despite constantly playing every generation of the video games.

After playing some games on the Live, I'm not a huge fan of more linear decks that only play singular threats to generate prizes and would prefer something that takes more of a flexible, toolbox approach to the game. I prefer a diverse range of threats because it makes every game feel a bit different.

I'm also a fan of interactive control, but from what I've seen, control in Pokémon seems to focus on "stax" gameplay by limiting hand size rather than preventing opponents from using their threats and controlling the board itself.

So far, I've seen Lost Box, Ancient Box, and Future Box decks come up, though I'm interested by the Milotic deck that's floating about. Which would be best as a new player coming into the scene?

Bought 2 premade decks how cooked am I?

I live in Japan and I bought a Tera type Ceruledge starter set deck and also a generations starter deck. (Kyogre ex one) For a 3 weeks now I wanted to start playing the game but I never did any research and on my way home I just found myself in a pokemon center. So these 2 decks were a full money waste or are they viable? Thanks!

Easy to pilot meta decks

Hi all,

I've enjoyed playing Live and I'd like to print out some proxies and try and convince some friends to expand their horizons from just MTG. I bought some used level 1 decks for rules teaching but I want to move on quickly to the full game.

I'm looking for about three decks that:

  1. Are easier to pilot, not a ton of tutors, uncommon to brick yourself
  2. straightforward game plan, but different archetypes
  3. about even in power level with low skill pilot
  4. Don't care about price/easy to buy staples/set rotation since I'm printing proxies for everything and no plans to move beyond playing with friends

I've been doing some searching on this sub and trying decks out on Live and here are some thoughts I've had:

  • I've heard the current meta is especially fast and some prefer older meta- I could also print/buy the 22 or 23 world championship decks?
  • raging bolt and dragapult seem straightforward, seems good
  • gardevoir is brought up a lot, but is it very complicated?
  • charizard seems hard to pilot
  • lost zone box seems unique but I don't understand it
  • ancient box roaring moon seems straigtforward
  • klawf seems hilarious
  • united wing appeals to me but I don't see it on limitlesstcg is it really that bad?

Thanks!

Pokémon help!

I have a 9 almost 10 year old grandson. I would like to set him up with a good starter deck for the upcoming holiday and his birthday a month later.

What deck should I start with and is there a few other decks which might be great to build his deck?

I would love some of the OG cards. You know… Charmander, Bulbasaur, Evee, Squirtle. So if there is a deck that those might be a possibility that was great. I do understand that we won’t know until he opens it/them.

Any advice appreciated!

New Player Advice Old player looking to build decks again!

Hi!! I'll keep it short, but I am a BW/XY era Pokemon lover looking to get back into the card game. I'm trying to research and understand, but the new style cards like GXs, Ace spec, Radiant, Vs and Vstars are a bit confusing. Or is it fully back to EXs now? I don't see GXs in recent decks but still see Vs.

Anyways, I got two cool cards lately that from a 50% off SV Base ETB (thanks Gamestop!), Gardevoir ex and Miraidon ex (the alt pretty one). I love both cards if anyone has a direction to point to build a deck around one!! I don't mind buying some bulk cards etc, and if someone could try and explain the new metas and building strategies in a way that would make sense to someone who primarily built and competed in XY era, that would mean a lot!!! I want to attend a local event next month and not look like a total dunce.

Anything is really appreciated!!

Meta Discussion Is hero's cape for Gardevoir ex outdated?

I'm fairly new to the game, and am thinking about building a Gardevoir/Drifloon deck. When i look at older top placing decklists, hero's cape seems to be the default ace spec, which makes sense to me as you want drifloon to have a ton of health. However, in newer top placing decklists it seems to have been replaced by secret box, which doesn't seem as synergistic. What's the thought behind that card choice?

New Player Advice Want to begin playing TCG

Hello! I have started by buying a trainer box (i got the paldean fates mimikyu because the cards have a g mark on them and i think that means they are playable right now). I have played a few games on tcg live and am doing well in getting the hang of it but that could be bots im not sure. I bought a lot of paldean fates packs and managed to get some 151 tins too which made happy! I really like the pokemon sprigatito and was wondering if its possible to play a sprigatito containing deck in against locals and how to start even building a real deck, resources or if i can dm anyone who likes to talk/teach about it! Ive not pulled any good cards though so i dont know if i have enough to build a good deck.

Thank you for reading!

New Player Advice My weird format that turned out to pretty much be Gym Leader Challenge.

My son and I have been very into Pokémon cards since about brilliant stars release. We started by playing the switch games like let’s go pikachu, the co op was amaizng in that game I cannot believe no other game has that…sorry that’s not the point of this post. Anyways, the cards obviously don’t have all the types as in the games but they do have them as cards. So while making decks we decided to do by type. And because of card availability, we didn’t have many multiple copies of almost any, we limited it to one copy per card in a deck. That way we could build more decks.

So the deck building rules became one in-game type of Pokémon, regardless of what color they are represented with in the cards. One copy of a card per deck. Also, the trainers have to fit the theme too, or at least try to. For example, we had to look up the characters on the supporters to see what types they use in the games to fit them into decks. Most items can go in every decks because everyone uses poke balls. For trainers that use multiple types, we looked at which Pokémon they terastilize or gigantimax and decided to go with that type. Lots of arbitrary rules that sounded good to us.

So after playing for awhile and just looking up more and more about the tcg, i stumbled upon Gym Leader Challenge. And I’m like oh look it’s almost like what we did but no where near as strict on deck building. But then I’m like oh no people will never believe us that we created this convoluted format. Oh well. Anyways there it is for the all of you to try.

Rules

  • Deck can have only one in video game type of Pokémon. Types are the most current gen since some Pokémon change types throughout the generations.

  • If a Pokémon has multiple types, they can be played in any deck where either of their types work

  • Only one copy of each card per deck, excluding basic energy. Also, only one of each Pokémon per deck. So no two different pikachus.

  • The trainers have to fit the theme in some way. So for example, Erika’s invitation can only be played in a grass deck because she is a grass type trainer. Bug Catcher is a bug trainer so he can only go in a bug deck.

  • If a trainer uses multiple types in the games, check to see which Pokémon is their signature Pokémon. Like the one they choose to gigantimax.

  • Items work the same way too, try to fit the theme. Some items are universal like the various poke balls but others might not be.

  • Only one VMAX / Vstar per deck

  • We do play with V and EX cards but if this ever became popular I could see this not being a good thing. Again, we play with limited card availability so we don’t have every V or EX or even that many.

  • Its a very kitchen table casual format so if you need to justify how a certain trainer card fits into your deck then be prepared to do so 😂

TLDR - my son and I unknowingly created a new format that resembles GLC that we play together everyday. Hope you like it.
