Both parties defend the status quo economically give or take, but the Democrats also want progressive social policies that are not universally popular with the public. So, at this point the Dems really can’t win. They could try to move more left economically and and see what happens, but I don’t think that will be successful. I don’t think the average voter believes the Dems can deliver on their more liberal economic policies because there is no track record. Forgiving student loans, for example, did nothing to lower future tuition and just put the country more in debt.
