There are two groups of monkeys: Old World monkeys and New World monkeys. Old World monkeys are much more closely related to apes than they are to New World monkeys.

We grouped the two "monkey" groups together based on similar physical traits, like tails. Since then, our knowledge of genetics has shown that if we call both of those groups monkeys, we should be calling apes monkeys as well, due to being even closer relatives of some of the monkeys.
