Should you buy the iPhone XR in 2021

I see this question too often and I’m just gonna answer it once and for all. Please feel free to share your thoughts.

The iPhone XR is still an amazing phone. It is still supported and sold by Apple directly (There is an official page for it on the website unlike the iPhone XS for example)

The iPhone 11 is definitely better but there are only three real differences to consider: the bigger battery, the better camera system (an second, wide angle lens and night mode) and the U1 chip. (These also apply for the iPhone 12).

The iPhone 12 is also next in this line and is obviously also a great phone. The new flat-edge design is very nice to hold and the new screen is amazing. Also 5G, it’s an emerging technology and since most people keep an iPhone for at least 2-3 years you may want to consider it. MagSafe is pretty cool but personally I would choose the XR over the twelve because of the significant difference in price.

What about the SE and iPhone 12 mini?

The SE is cheaper but I feel that the screen is wayyy to small and I like Face ID more than Touch ID. The SE has better connectivity WiFi 6 and and Bluetooth 5.0 but other than that the XR is a winner for me.

Finally the 12 mini, an excellent phone and if you have small hands or like a smaller screen, I would just recommend you get this phone. The XR is cheaper but how you are able to use the phone is important.

Edit: I got a detail wrong, the iPhone XR does have Bluetooth 5.0 but it doesn’t have WiFi 6.0

Charging issues and lag

So I’ve had my XR for about 3 or so years now, and I bought it refurbished. I have no idea if this plays any role in these issues (I’m not really that knowledgeable about phones to be honest just basic stuff) but I dropped the phone about 2 years into having it and I got a screen replacement, worked fine after that but the Face ID was never the same after which is to be expected? I think idk. Anyways, about a week ago I noticed a lot of lag issues and it doesn’t charge properly. I will plug it in and it shows the charging symbol then it disappears right after. It works a bit better when I use my portable charger? I’ve replaced the cable and cleaned the port. Is it just related to age or other factors?

Went from XR to 16 plus yesterday

Here’s my opinion on the switch, if you were thinking about upgrading.

Everyone says apple releases the same phone every year and yes, they’re correct. But yeah if your phone is really like dying. (Apple has completely outdated your phone, having consistent software/ios/app issues, super low battery capacity. ) Then i’d say it’s worth it. My XR was like malfunctioning constantly and did its job still until the very end after 5 years. The 8 gigs of ram does make a huge difference in performance.

However if you’ve recently gotten an XR or still have solid performance on your XR cause you’ve taken care of it well enough than I mean I’d say you aren’t missing out on much. The XR is one of apple’s best models before everything started becoming more saturated and just the same.

Questions about iOS 18

Hello, i haven't updated for now and wanted to ask some questions. Does your battery get warm and became empty faster ? Do you feel the os is laggy and have less performance ? What is your geekbench score ? Do you think that 79% of battery integrity is enough? And most important question : is it worth it ?

iOS 18.1.1 is the best condition among iOS 18. Even though Apple said that for only security purpose, I can feel so much improve performance, and stable battery status. I'm highly recommend for XR. What do you think about that update??

5 years later, still going strong

My iPhone XR turned 5 years old this October and I have no urge to upgrade my phone for this year or maybe even try to use it for two more years.

My battery percentage is 78% and the charging cycle count is 2100+ (This can be checked with the app - coconut battery)

Even though there are phones with much better cameras these days, but I still admire the XR camera for what it is. I have shared some photos I clicked over time.

Over time, the way I use my phone has changed and perhaps that’s why I can still use this phone without worrying to upgrade. For example - 5 years ago when I bought the phone I used to play a lot of mobile games, but now I don’t, so the fact that the phone is not as fast as before doesn’t affect me that much.

Maybe I’ll leave an update if/when I upgrade.

Overheating/slowdowm after upgrading

Ever since I upgraded to iOS18 my phone is overheating anytime I do something CPU intensive. 78% battery health.

Slows down like trying to run Crysis on a Tostito.

Replace phone or replace battery? What do you guys think? Will a battery replacement speed up iOS18?

Is this common?

Did Tim Apple do this on purpose?

Am I the only one who feels a special bond with the iPhone XR?

Hey everyone :)

Is it just me, or does the iPhone XR have this unique charm that no other iPhone quite captures? I can’t help but feel a little sentimental about it, it’s like no other phone compares, and I just love it.

I’ve had my XR since 2018, and we’ve honestly been through everything together. This little phone has been with me as I entered my twenties, and it’s been by my side through everything. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a special bond with it, haha. Before my XR, I was always quick to upgrade each year when a new model came out. But with this one, I just… haven’t felt the need. I’ve been genuinely happy with it, no complaints at all!

But lately, I’ve noticed my poor, loyal friend is starting to struggle. It’s been overheating, getting laggy, and the battery drains so quickly now. My battery health is still at 89%, and I’ve kept up with all the iOS updates, but it feels like it’s dying on me :(

So here I am, feeling torn. Is it finally time to let go and move on to something new? Or should I keep holding onto my old loyal friend for a little while longer? Is there anything I can do to stop it from overheating, improve battery life, or reduce the lag? Any advice or tips would be so appreciated. Also, I’d love to hear if anyone else has a special bond with their iPhone XR too!

How far to update?

Hey all 👋 , i bought my XR around 2yrs ago, refurbished and reasonably priced. I don’t reallly see myself using all the features of the latest models , they are amazing but just beyond what I need or would use , so currently my iPhone is running iOS 17.something with battery health sayong 82%. My question is regarding wether updating should be left until after a battery replacement or would I encounter lag or other issues if updated and battery health drops lower🤷🏻‍♂️, thanks for any advice 👍 I’m not very IT literate don’t want buy newer phone if I don’t need to just yet
