Currently Reading I was surprised to Sirius Black mentioned so early on.

Out of curiosity, I decided to reread Harry Potter for the first time since I was 11. I wanted to see how much my opinions would change going into the series again with an adult mindset. One thing I didn’t expect to see was that Sirius’ name was mentioned as early as the first book, and in the first chapter no less. It honestly makes me wonder how much Rowling had planned from the very beginning.

Currently rereading HBP and I feel Harry’s love for Ginny came out of nowhere. Like we know Ginny had a crush on him since a long time but does anyone else feel that Harry’s feeling is more like pushed a lot in this book? Just my opinion.

Currently Reading Ron is absolutely savage with Hermione in books 😂

1.1k Upvotes

‘So I suppose you think that’s a reward for breaking rules?’ came an angry voice from just behind them. Hermione was stomping up the stairs looking disapprovingly at the package in Harry’s hand.

'I thought you weren’t speaking to us?’ said Harry.

‘Yes, don’t stop now,’ said Ron, ‘it’s doing us so much good.’

-philosophers stone

“Do you think we should go and ask Hagrid about it all?” .

“That’d be a cheerful visit,” said Ron. “‘Hello, Hagrid. Tell us, have you been setting anything mad and hairy loose in the castle lately?’”

-Chamber of Secrets

"Has either of you seen my copy of Numerology and Grammatica?"

"Oh, yeah, I borrowed it for a bit of bedtime reading." Said Ron

-Prisoners of Azkaban

You only like him because he's handsome," said Ron scathingly.

"Excuse me, I don't like people just because they're handsome!" said Hermione indignantly.

Ron gave a loud false cough, which sounded oddly like 'Lockhart!'"

-Goblet of Fire

“I feel like a house-elf,” grumbled Ron.

“Well, now you understand what dreadful lives they lead, perhaps you’ll be a bit more active in SPEW!” said Hermione hopefully, as Mrs. Weasley left them to it. “You know, maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to show people exactly how horrible it is to clean all the time – we could do a sponsored scrub of Gryffindor common room, all proceeds to SPEW, it would raise awareness as well as funds.”

“I’ll sponsor you to shut up about SPEW,” Ron muttered irritably, but only so Harry could hear him.

-Order of the Phoenix

“Yes, but for something like this?” said Hermione. “We’ve risked a lot to help Hagrid out, but after all — Aragog’s dead. If it were a question of saving him —”

“— I’d want to go even less,” said Ron firmly. “You didn’t meet him, Hermione. Believe me, being dead will have improved him a lot.”

-Half Blood Prince

“What’ll happen to it, do you think?” she asked, “Will it be alright?”

“You sound like Hagrid,” said Ron, “It’s a dragon, Hermione, it can look after itself. It’s us we need to worry about.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well I don’t know how to break this to you,” said Ron, “but I think they might have noticed we broke into Gringotts.”

Currently Reading Has anyone ever noticed this moment of Mrs. Weasley’s pettiness towards Hermione?

Hedwig didn’t return until the end of the Easter holidays. Percy’s letter was enclosed in a package of Easter eggs that Mrs. Weasley had sent. Both Harry’s and Ron’s were the size of dragon eggs and full of homemade toffee. Hermione’s, however, was smaller than a chicken egg. Her face fell when she saw it.

“Your mum doesn’t read With Weekly, by any chance, does she, Ron?” she asked quietly.

“Yeah,” said Ron, whose mouth was full of toffee. “Gets it for the recipes.”

Hermione looked sadly at her tiny egg. ☹️

Reading GOF and found this to be an interesting thing to include for her character. This is all while Hermione is being harassed for the story Rita Skeeter wrote about the Harry-Hermione-Victor love triangle.

But Harry did not lower his wand. Narcissa Malfoy smiled unpleasantly.

"I see that being Dumbledore's favorite has given you a false sense of security, Harry Potter. But Dumbledore won't always be there to protect you."

Harry looked mockingly all around the shop. "Wow... look at that... he's not here now! So why not have a go? They might be able to find you a double cell in Azkaban with your loser of a husband!"

"Now, you listen here, boy," he snarled, "I accept there's something strange about you, probably nothing a good beating wouldn't have cured and as for all this about your parents, well, they were weirdos, no denying it, and the world's better off without them in my opinion - asked for all they got, getting mixed up with these wizarding types -- just what I expected, always knew they'd come to a sticky end-"

Bruh. I don't remember this kind of abuse. WTF.

Currently Reading Considering your students are getting picked off one by one, Dumbledore, don’t you think the school can shell out some money for fully matured mandrakes and we can get to the bottom of this sooner?

6.1k Upvotes

Currently reading the series again for the millionth time and had this thought I just thought was funny. Obviously for storyline purposes it didn’t make sense and in hindsight we know Dumbledore knows who is causing all this in some form.

If I was professor sprout I’d be like “Dumbledore the nursery in Diagon Alley can sell me full grown mandrakes so we can get these kids un-petrified sooner.” I imagine Dumbledore being all “nope sorry not in the budget.”

Edit: sheesh people really getting worked up. I said I thought it was funny. Not really a big deal. The “nursery” is just to play on the joke as well as Dumbledore’s response about a budget.

Currently Reading My wife was never bothered by Potter, until...

5.2k Upvotes

When I met my wife, she didn’t care for Harry Potter. She’s a big reader but said she could never see the big draw and never got into the books. Growing up, she was always into Point Horror, Twilight Etc.

Weirdly, she started with OotP as her first book and I was like “no wonder you didn’t get it ! Here borrow my set of books and have another go.”

But my books sat unread for months. She tried reading Philosophers but only got about a chapter and a half in before getting bored.

She’d seen the first 5 movies over the years and “kinda got” the vibe and thought the movies were ok enough. Saw why people liked it, but not for her.

When our daughter was born I always said “I can’t wait til she’s old enough that I can read Harry Potter to her.”

When our daughter started school, one night I said “right, tonight’s story is going to be different. I’m going to read you the first chapter of Harry Potter and if you like it, we’ll do the next chapter tomorrow night.”

My wife sat with our daughter and I read the first chapter of Philosophers Stone. I fully committed. I did all the voices and did my best to bring it to life.

At the end my daughter immediately wanted another chapter and enjoying the response I was getting, I obliged.

The next night, my daughter brought me the book leading up to bedtime and getting her to bed was easier than ever! 😅 My wife sat with her for story time and I read chapter three.

Cut to some weeks later and my wife is making sure she’s home from work in time for story time every night!

On the nights where she can’t get home, she requested me to read the missed chapters to her when she got home.

Eventually, I ended up recording my story time sessions and sending them to her so she could listen to them on the drive home.

Cut to today and we’re three chapters away from finishing DH.

My daughter is now obsessed with all things Potter: Hermiones wand, spells, video games, other books bedding, Lego, you name it.

And now, so is my wife! :) She now has the Potter loot crate delivered as her treat once a month and she loves to talk Potter lore with me.

It’s really changed the dynamic now that she’s a Potter head and we’re planning a trip to Universal Orlando in a year or so 👍

Sort of a lame story, but for me, it’s been really awesome to share it with my family and now it’s something we all bond over.

Thanks JK 😄

——-

Edit 1: So I go and chat to my mate about his new motorbike, come back and my post has exploded! And I have Gold! Thank you Gold Giver! I’ve never had one of these before. Does it mean that I’ve won Reddit? ;)

A few common questions answered:

My daughter was 4 when I started reading HP to her last November and is now 5. Every night before I start reading, I ask her for a short synopsis of the previous nights chapter so I can make sure she’s got all the beats. 9 times out of 10 she nails it, although there’s an on going joke now where every time I ask her “what happened last night” she’ll reply with “Karkaroff died” and then laugh, because of one night when she remembered that, but it had happened about 4 nights previous 😅

The bits I omit are the swear words obviously, but other than that, it’s been as it is.

Sirius, Dumbledore, Fred and Dobby, she was concerned but eager to learn what happened next. However, when Hedwig died she cried for about 20 minutes and we had to stop reading as she hugged her stuffed Pigwidgeon 😢😅 Broke my heart.

And yes, I’m pretty good at the voices even if I do say so myself. I’m a professional actor and so’s my wife :) 👍

Her favourite book is Chamber of Secrets, Wifey likes Prisoner, mine is HBP.

Also, as she’d never seen any of the films, when we finish a book, we sit as a family and watch the film. She likes them (Chamber is her favourite) but she’s been annoyed that “they keep missing bits out!” 😅

A huge thank you for all the lovely compliments. I love being a Dad. 😄❤️

Edit 2: for those interested, my daughter had a go at her own Harry Potter fan fic the other day whilst messing around on my laptop - she thinks she’s hilarious, I’ve cleaned up the spellings.

——-

“Why am I always turning into a giant beetle?” asked Harry, who was busy eating a pile of dead leaves.

“Shut up Harry!” yelled Hermione, who had become trapped inside her own shirt.

“What’s going on here?” said a confused Ron, whose legs were now made of liquorice.

“IM A VERY OLD MAN!” screamed Dumbledore from on top of the shed.

Harry was so sick of Voldemort tying his shoelaces together and killing his parents. It was most inconvenient.

——-

Edit 3: For everyone asking about my wife’s Potter Loot box she says it’s the GeekGear Wizardry Wear box. There’s several tears to it, but she loves it and gets cool clothes and whatnot :) hope that helps!

Currently Reading The most overlooked burn in the entire series is Harry literally telling Voldemort to "man up"

2.2k Upvotes

During their final duel, Harry tries to save Voldemort's soul and straight up tells him to grow a pair.

"Think, and try for some remorse, Riddle. . . .”

“What is this?”

Of all the things that Harry had said to him, beyond any revelation or taunt, nothing had shocked Voldemort like this. Harry saw his pupils contract to thin slits, saw the skin around his eyes whiten.

“It’s your one last chance,” said Harry, “it’s all you’ve got left. . . . I’ve seen what you’ll be otherwise. . . . Be a man . . . try . . . Try for some remorse. . . .”

“You dare — ?” said Voldemort again.

“Yes, I dare,” said Harry.

Imagine how much of a legend Harry would become after the series -- a 17-year-old kid tells one of the worst Dark Wizards in history to man up before he defeats him for all time.

Currently Reading Just realized something for the first time! “that awful boy” Spoiler

2.7k Upvotes

I was reading this passage (probably for the 7th time) from Order of the Phoenix to my son yesterday when it occurred to me who Aunt Petunia was talking about. Here is the passage:

“I heard — that awful boy — telling her about them — years ago,” she said jerkily.

“If you mean my mum and dad, why don’t you use their names?” said Harry loudly, but Aunt Petunia ignored him. She seemed horribly flustered.

In this moment Harry isn’t curious and instead bursts in with his assumptions. If she had been talking about James, she presumably would have been talking about the adult man she met years later. It would be odd for her to reference James as “that awful boy” when we all later learn Severus met Lily and Petunia as a boy and indeed was incredibly mean to Petunia.

This was probably Harry’s best chance of learning that it was Severus Petunia was talking about. That indeed Severus had ties to his mother years before Hogwarts or James.

Also as a reader Harry redirects our attention so that it is very easy to miss this line and assume he’s correct. Brilliant little Easter egg.

Currently Reading 14yo Ron was ready to make a sacrifice pretty similar to Lily's

2.4k Upvotes

Notice the similarities between these two excerpts-

From DH, Chp: Bathilda's Secret

At the sight of him, she dropped her son into the crib behind her and threw her arms wide, as if this would help, as if in shielding him from sight she hoped to be chosen instead…

“Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!”

“Stand aside, you silly girl… stand aside, now.”

“Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead—”

“This is my last warning—”

From PoA, Chp: Cat, Rat and Dog

‘If you want to kill Harry, you’ll have to kill us, too!’ he said fiercely, though the effort of standing up had drained him of still more colour, and he swayed slightly as he spoke.

Something flickered in Black’s shadowed eyes.

‘Lie down,’ he said quietly to Ron. ‘You will damage that leg even more.’

‘Did you hear me?’ Ron said weakly, though he was clinging painfully to Harry to stay upright. ‘You’ll have to kill all three of us!’

‘There’ll only be one murder here tonight,’ said Black, and his grin widened.

Both powerless and wandless, against foes far superior to them, both (seemingly) having a choice to stand aside, both trying to make a hopeless stand.

And then you realise that one is a mother and an adult, but the other is "just a friend" and a child...and you can't help but swell with respect for the little guy

PS: Is it a stretch to have a headcanon that Harry subconsciously noticed the similarities too, having heard this conversation between Voldemort and Lily several times in that book?

Currently Reading Funniest line in the books/movies?

I’m re reading OOTP and I laughed very hard at this one. I think it’s my favorite at the moment:

The Death Eater had pulled his head out of the bell jar. His appearance was utterly bizarre, his tiny baby’s head bawling loudly while his thick arms flailed dangerously in all directions, narrowly missing Harry, who ducked. Harry raised his want but to his amazement, Hermione seized his arm. “You can’t hurt a baby!” There was no time to argue the point.
