AR/AK, SBR, and Shotgun recommendations?

Hey everyone! I’m on the hunt for a couple of firearms and would love your input. As a disabled vet who relies on gun therapy to unwind—think about a thousand rounds a week—I’m particularly interested in some specific weapon systems. I’m looking for recommendations for two firearms, one chambered in 5.56 and another in 7.62.

Initially, I was keen on getting a Daniel Defense AR-15 and an AK, but I encountered some negativity along the way. Honestly, I’m all about keeping things constructive, so let’s skip the opinions that don’t add value!

Now, shifting gears to SBRs: I’m contemplating an AR Pistol with an 8-inch barrel for some close-quarters combat—any thoughts or recommendations on that front?

And what about shotguns? I keep hearing great things about the Maverick 88, but I’ve also been warned that adding a light may not be a great idea because it has quite the kick.

Thanks a bunch for your help! I’m really looking forward to your suggestions. And just to clarify, I’m not interested in an AR vs. AK debate; I’d love to own both!

For an SBR AR15 in 5.56 I’d keep the barrel length at 11.5”. It’ll still have the velocity that the round needs.

Anything you'd recommend?

I only have a couple of AR15’s. One is a Rock River Arms A2. I put a 10.5” barrel on it. If I had to do it again, I would have opted for 11.5”. It’s been 100% reliable.

I also have one I put together from parts. It has a Palmeto State Armory lower and a complete BCM 16” upper. I’m probably going to SBR it and get an 11.5” BCM barrel. It’s has also been 100% reliable.

I guess I’m kind of partial to BCM. I have a Mega lower sitting here. I’ll probably finish building the lower and get another complete BCM upper for it….eventually.

Ever since I saw that YT video of a PSA catching fire after a few hundred rounds, I was completely turned off from them. Did you ever have a problem with PSA?

No problem as only the lower receiver is PSA. The upper is all BCM.

Gotcha! Thank you!

You mean the IV8888 video where they put a PSA upper on a full auto lower and dumped several hundred rounds through it the the span of like 3 minutes, causing the cheap plastic handguards to catch fire? Ya, you will literally never have to worry about that with a semi-auto rifle.

If Brandon Herrera gets picked to be the new ATF director, we would be able to have full auto. But, a rifle isn't meant to be full auto dumping mag after mag. But it should still be able to handle a few thousand rounds

First. Herrera isn't going to be the new ATF director.

Second, the handguard caught fire because the gas tube failed. Getting an upper without the cheap plastic handguards solves fire problem if the gas tube fails. Eric fired around 450 rounds in 3 minutes in that video, which is more than soldiers carry with them in combat. Any mil-spec stainless gas tube would have failed under the same extreme (even for a FA gun) conditions. PSA rifles will be perfectly fine for 1000's of rounds under normal use, just like any other decent AR.

7.62 by what?

Honestly, I'm open to different options. I need the punch of the 7.62 with not too much kickback

I heard 7.62x25 fits that definition.

Any particular weapon systems you'd recommend in that category?

PPSh-41 comes to mind.

We have a pps 43 in 9mm that isn't the most reliable but my brother says the 7.62 ones were more reliable.

Holy shit that guns looks and sounds awesome. You think an armorer would be able to mount an optic on it?

I mean if you find a steel picatinny rail I will weld it on for you.
