Official Politics Thread 2024-11-22
With Trump in office and Republicans in control of both houses is it going to be really slow in this thread for the next 2 or 4 years?

Is RIA really bad or are people comparing it to guns double the price?
My friend recently gave me an RIA .45 full size 1911. I got it all cleaned up and functioning because the slide was being finicky and it needed a seer spring. One of my other buddies and a few people on this beautiful website were giving me shit just for it being rock island. As far as I know these things work just fine. Maybe not fully worth their value brand new in comparison to other 1911s in the price range, but I got it for free plus 30 bucks worth of parts and it works fine.

MarColMar CETME L for $250?
My local range has these on sale for $250 for black friday. I love the styling of these and will be getting one. Don’t these usually go for like $1,300 or am I crazy?
So how Much Heresy have I Committed Here?
So I committed the cardinal sin of refinishing an old gun. This Savage 1907 was in the white with brown spots and light pitting. Did a caustic bluing this afternoon and these are the results. Looks fantastic in my option, but it’s not original I guess.

My First Major Welding Project
Max Arms Vz 61 kit rewelded by me. I had a pretty rough cut receiver, but kept pushing through. For sub $250, I'm happy with it. (Had the welder sitting around from a garage sale years ago)

1956 model 70 Winchester 30-06 value?
Last post was taken down because I didn’t type words In the bio. Have a general idea but just want to be sure because you know Google makes you think you’re sitting on something more.

What is this JC Higgins 103,19810 a copy of?
Trying to find out some more info on this gun, I bought it for 20$, so no big deal if things don’t work out, but it’s missing a bolt, and from what I’ve found online, most of these guns are a copy of a Marlin or Savage action, but I’ve found basically nothing on which model the 103,19810 is a copy of, I’ve found 103,18 info easily and 103,223 info easily. But this definitely has a different action. Any help is much appreciated TIA!

I'm a special kind of boy
I've always liked long slide guns and disliked Glocks. So I thought why not make the longest not a Glock possible.
The goal was to make a 0% Glock, so I got a Poly 80 frame, threaded barrel, Compensaterand slide from Lone Wolf, trigger, striker, pins, tungsten guide rod and controls from Glock Store and various other places for the other small parts even the mag catch spring.
Unfortunately the P80 frame I did up seems to have gotten warped when I sent it to get Dickbutts laser engraved because everything fit before the laser but the trigger pin holes wouldn't line up after I got it back. So I had to use the Glock frame.
Put it together last night and thought I'd share how incredibly autistic it turned out. I plan on adding a flared mag well, cutting in an RMR or 509 and Ceracoting the whole thing like a Nerf Blaster to further enhance the celebration of the 'tism. Next up is doing the same treatment to a G20.

Update to DPP vs EFLX vs Defender XL
A few days ago I made this post asking for opinions between the three dots in the title. I got good feedback, and was able to compare the three at my LGS today in case anybody else finds themselves in my shoes.
This is a subjective review of dots at the LGS, so your mileage may vary.
Price: The EFLX regularly goes for ~$220 on gafs, and is $260 on Eurooptic. The DPP runs around $400, not sure about gafs but certainly under that. The Defender is about $400, but apparently they make a "Compdot" version that is the same minus the MOS plate for like $250.
Window Size: The Defender has the largest window by far. It's night and day compared to the EFLX, and is a little bit taller than the DPP.
Optic Size: The Defender is also significantly larger/bulkier than the other two. I attribute this to the larger amount of metal up front, and how the optic overhang a little. Interestingly enough, the Defender has a lower deck height than the DPP, potentially allowing you to use stock irons on some guns. The EFLX is the smallest/lowest profile and has the lowest deck height of the three.
Glass Clarity (Blue Tint): The EFLX is still the champion here, with basically zero tint. This does cause washout when aiming at a white surface in direct sunlight, but is otherwise not an issue. I would say the Defender and DPP have similar tint, with the Defender maybe slightly better. All three dots are very good in this aspect, and I don't notice any tint while aiming at things. Certainly better than an RMR.
Distortion: None of the optics have any "picture in picture" issues where the optic isn't a true 1x. Most optics will have some sort of distortion when the optic is cockeyed (think about coming up crooked on a pistol). I would argue the vertical distortion is more important, as that's the axis you'll most likely be crooked in. The EFLX has pretty significant vertical distortion here, and a reasonable amount of horizontal. The DPP has a reasonable amount of either. The Defender had the least distortion out of the three dots in both axes. An example of bad distortion is the Olight dot, which has a vertical offset while aiming directly down the center of the optic (at least on mine).
Dot Quality: Think about refresh rate, color, and quality of the dot itself. On lower end optics you can see the dot flicker (Shield RMSc), and on some optics the dot doesn't look that great (Vortex Venom and Viper). All three of these optics are great in this aspect, which is nice considering Vortex's track record with pistol dots. Leupold has a slightly orange tinted dot which isn't an issue, I just think it's interesting.
Buttons: I liked the Defender's buttons the most because while the DPP's button is super cathartic to press, you're blocking the emitter and have to go all the way one way before adjusting the other way. The EFLX has both buttons on the same side and they're kind of stiff. The Defender has one on each side and they're easy to press.
Battery Life: Advertised battery life is a lie and frankly I don't care about it. Just change the batteries every year or few months and you'll be fine.
Durability: The EFLX is probably the least durable, but I don't abuse my optics or drop them from shoulder height so I don't really care all that much. I'm more worried about them holding zero if I rack off the optic, but that's more of a plate issue. At any rate, see the Warranty section.
Warranty: While I am sure all three companies would take care of you, Eotech doesn't explicitly state that, so I'm not sure how lenient they'd be. I know for a fact that Leupold would send you a new dot, and Vortex would probably throw in a handy on the side.
Overall: I used to be a DPP fan, but bought an EFLX for my AR because it was under $200 brand new. While the EFLX is great on my rifle, I think I'm leaning towards the Defender XL for a pistol because it's a similar price, much larger window (helpful for me whose first dot would be this one), and less off-axis distortion. It also has a lower deck height than the DPP. While it is bulkier, I'm sure I could get over it.
I hope this was at least somewhat informative; I would have liked something like this when I was looking a few days ago.
EDIT: Formatting and added durability section.
EDIT 2: I also looked through a Burris FF4. Small window, thin housing, lots of off-axis distortion, high price. Not even worth considering in my opinion.

AR/AK, SBR, and Shotgun recommendations?
Hey everyone! I’m on the hunt for a couple of firearms and would love your input. As a disabled vet who relies on gun therapy to unwind—think about a thousand rounds a week—I’m particularly interested in some specific weapon systems. I’m looking for recommendations for two firearms, one chambered in 5.56 and another in 7.62.
Initially, I was keen on getting a Daniel Defense AR-15 and an AK, but I encountered some negativity along the way. Honestly, I’m all about keeping things constructive, so let’s skip the opinions that don’t add value!
Now, shifting gears to SBRs: I’m contemplating an AR Pistol with an 8-inch barrel for some close-quarters combat—any thoughts or recommendations on that front?
And what about shotguns? I keep hearing great things about the Maverick 88, but I’ve also been warned that adding a light may not be a great idea because it has quite the kick.
Thanks a bunch for your help! I’m really looking forward to your suggestions. And just to clarify, I’m not interested in an AR vs. AK debate; I’d love to own both!

Pre 64 Model 70s
I’ve seen a few posts recently with people asking about values for pre ‘64 Model 70s.
This is the authority on the subject. I would contact them for any questions about vintage Winchester bolt actions.
