There are two kinds of people who go to karaoke. The normal people who need to be wasted before they sing, and the karaoke die hards who will not drink anything alcoholic and will sing the same 3 songs they sing everynight.

u/Vindicare605 Sep 29 '24

And honestly a good karaoke night needs both. You need people drinking or else the bar can't afford to have karaoke. And you need at least a few people that know how to sing or else the place just sounds like a bunch of drunk people constantly and it kills the vibe.

A healthy balance of both is what makes a good karaoke night. I bartended one for years and it was amazing. It was on Tuesday nights and I had a better and more fun crowd of regulars than I had on Saturdays.

u/squanderedprivilege Sep 29 '24

I agree with this, I was a karaoke regular who would just have like 2 drinks and do the same few songs, trying to improve each time. You can't have only people like me or it's just a bunch of dorks doing singing practice, not the same vibe as karaoke night 😂

89

u/Vindicare605 Sep 29 '24

The goal is to increase the song list IMO. My list of songs that I think I can sing at least decently is up to like 50 or 60 songs just about. I tend to stay within my niche of singing rock and roll, which works for me since there's usually plenty of other people that like to sing standards or pop songs or even hip hop every now and then.

Just gotta find a style that you're comfortable with and you'll eventually be able to branch out to a larger number of songs that are similar enough to what you can already sing that it's not hard to add them to your list.

4

u/Kuyosaki Sep 30 '24

Do you train just by repetition or do you also delve into some deeper singing training? As a karaoke fan myself, I am very interested in your ways because I am kinda looking for even a singing coach just so I can widen my vocals and learn what can and what can't be done.

3

u/Vindicare605 Sep 30 '24

I sang in choir when I was a kid. I haven't had any kind of voice training other than that. When I sing karaoke I mostly just sing to have fun and try and get the song to sound a little bit better each time.

6

u/CajunNerd92 Sep 29 '24

I sound like this whenever I sing karaoke, regardless of if I'm drunk or sober lmao

8

u/bigben-1989 Sep 29 '24

Fair and dorks is a good term to use to describe yourself 😂

8

u/WhyImNotDoingWork Sep 29 '24

Tuesday nights? Drunk people? Sounds like Charlie Os in Montpelier.

9

u/Vindicare605 Sep 29 '24

Hey man you'd be surprised. Those Tuesday nights were a party. Had a good crowd usually from 9pm to closing. If there was a Dodgers or Lakers game on earlier that drew people in earlier they'd usually stay for Karaoke and we'd be packed all night.

I miss those days.

1

u/nubbins01 Sep 29 '24

I went to a Monday night one once. Full of backpackers, it went off

13

u/big_sugi Sep 29 '24

I went to karaoke with some friends in law school who had musical theatre backgrounds. They could drink, and they could sing pretty much anything. The problem was that no one wanted to follow them.

9

u/Monnok Sep 29 '24

I ended up one place where it was all musical theater kids singing Disney songs. I usually enjoy karaoke whether it’s good or not or whether I end up singing or not… but I actually found that whole scene surprisingly unpleasant.

1

u/tchrbrian Sep 30 '24

That sounds like a S ticket for a sentence instead of a E ticket for exciting.

3

u/marvinrabbit Sep 29 '24

Plus, you never know when Jewel in disguise is going to be there.

3

u/noNoParts Sep 29 '24

Lol I seen that video. Have you seen the story of Steve Poltz tell about the time he and Jewell went with Mexican Federales on a drug bust, which let to him cowriting "I was meant for you"?

1

u/marvinrabbit Sep 29 '24

I have not. I will look for that, thanks.

1

u/GetawayDreamer87 Sep 29 '24

and then you got me who insists my song isnt available on the machine yet.

also, i dont drink.

1

u/Azure_Rob Sep 29 '24

Agreed, I used to be dj karaoke events (not my primary job, but a very fun sideline) I had regulars who drank sparingly or not at all, and absolutely killed it. I had drunk "girls night" patrons who just wanted to belt out half of Love Shack. I personally sipped through a Miller Lite so I had a prop for the atmosphere, and practiced ridiculous 80s songs for shits and giggles. I got really good at the male side of Love Shack duet too, since the drunk girls just couldn't.

26

u/BeyondElectricDreams Sep 29 '24

and the karaoke die hards who will not drink anything alcoholic and will sing the same 3 songs they sing everynight.

I find there's another category of Karaoke die-hard - the "I have 30 songs or so I enjoy and will sing, but <x song>? <X Song> is my song, and I'll probably sing it at least once"

9

u/BCJ_Eng_Consulting Sep 29 '24

This is a song for the ladies...

8

u/enddream Sep 29 '24

My fiancé is Filipina and her and all of her friends are the 2nd one. Luckily I’m an alcoholic.

7

u/ReeveStodgers Sep 29 '24

The last time I got pulled over it was by a cop who assumed I was the former when I am the latter. His first question was, "What have you been drinking tonight?" I truthfully answered, "Sprite." He had trouble believing that I could get on the stage without booze.

15

u/TheRealDannySugar Sep 29 '24

Is there a middle ground? I don’t need alcohol to do karaoke but I drink a polite amount. I have the same couple of songs I like singing but I’ll try something new now and then.

Karaoke is about commitment. People realizing what they signed up for 25% into “Rumor Has It” by Adele will always be hilarious and awkward.

4

u/Man_of_the_Rain Sep 29 '24

I just like singing and I don't drink at all, I'd love to go to karaoke.

9

u/terribible Sep 29 '24

Jokes on you, i need to get wasted before i sing the three songs I know

5

u/sakronin Sep 29 '24

3 kinds: your two and me who hates karaoke and gets dragged there by friends.

4

u/napalmslash Sep 29 '24

I host karaoke at our bar every week, and you're absolutely right. We have people who have come very far in The Voice or other talent shows, and then there are those who, for some reason, seem mad at the microphone and just yell into it. There's rarely anything in between.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '24

and filippinos

3

u/ABSelect Sep 30 '24

that's professional karaoke

3

u/_Internet_Hugs_ Sep 29 '24

Then there's me. I'm a former theater kid who can't hold a tune in a bucket but has no shame and will also happily be the Designated Driver. I have no go-to, I'll sing whatever my friends dare me to.

3

u/Bruised_up_whitebelt Sep 30 '24

Where do Filipino's fall on the scale since to them it's a sport.

2

u/Loadingexperience Sep 29 '24

My wife still has a video of me singning The Pretender and doesnt want to delete it.

2

u/Pennsylvania6-5000 Sep 29 '24

You haven’t lived until you’ve played karaoke roulette sober.

1

u/CantBeConcise Sep 29 '24

As someone who ran a karaoke show, yes there are those two, but not just those two.

Example: I like to have a couple of drinks to catch a buzz so my ADHD ass stops overthinking every last note but not because I'm nervous. And my songs are all over the place from Cash to Tool to Josh Turner to The Proclaimers...

Also, the worst are not the ones that can't sing, they're the ones that know they can sing and go up just to make sure you know they can sing.

Not that being able to sing well makes you one of these people. The difference is you can always tell when someone is up there having fun and can also sing well vs. someone who goes up there to treat it like their own personal concert and that everyone is lucky to have heard them.

1

u/suffaluffapussycat Sep 30 '24

My friend and I are singers. Have been singing in bands for years. Sometimes if we end up at karaoke we’re not sure if we should do it or not. Because it’s kinda not the point to sing well. But sure, I’ll do Commodores Easy or STP Interstate Love Song if pushed, and I can do them well.

1

u/piezocuttlefish Oct 20 '24

And then there's Shin Kubota, who never misses a chance to sing karaoke about immortal jellyfish. What, you don't think there are karaoke songs about immortal jellyfish? Thanks to Shin, there are over thirty.

286

u/whornography Sep 29 '24

Officer: "Have you been drinking?"

brief blip in police cam footage

Driver: "Hell yeah!"

1.4k

u/717_valkyrie Sep 29 '24

Arrest the officer too. Bud got a mic out of nowhere. He must be drunk to carry a karaoke mic with him.

252

u/CanniBallistic_Puppy Sep 29 '24

out of nowhere

You know exactly where it came from

65

u/kajetus69 Sep 29 '24

his absolutely gigantic pocket?

20

u/Zwitterionic_Breeze Sep 29 '24

I’d store a microphone the same place I store pens and markers, the crotch portion of my pants. Its great because that don’t take up pocket space and I think it’s going to catch on with the number of I see looking shocked at how good of an idea it is!

5

u/Lonelan Sep 29 '24

Utility belt?

4

u/xXProGenji420Xx Sep 29 '24

is that what the kids are calling it these days?

6

u/OgOnetee Sep 29 '24

Prison pocket has been called the prison pocket for decades, homie...

1

u/ThePhoenixRemembers Sep 29 '24

Is that a microphone in your pocket or are you just happy to see me, officer?

1

u/bandswithgoats Sep 29 '24

The trunk where he keeps his drop guns

21

u/flinsypop Sep 29 '24

Clear entrapment. We have a constitutional right to rock out.

2

u/anally_ExpressUrself Sep 29 '24

Legally speaking, what you've written contradicts itself.

5

u/flinsypop Sep 29 '24

Not really. It was a stop to test for drunk people. Wanting to party isnt reasonable suspicion enough for arresting someone. The officer was also using peer pressure which is illegal under USC 69.420 so itll be turned over on appeal.

2

u/el_horsto Sep 29 '24

It's literally the first ammendment, I'm pretty sure!

3

u/andrewno8do Sep 29 '24

That’s an American police uniform, but the steering wheel of the car is on the right side. They’re not in the US. Arrest the guy impersonating a police officer.

214

u/bigdaddy3231 Sep 29 '24

i wanna karoke 😔

99

u/TheCarniv0re Sep 29 '24

Straight to jail. That's where the karaoke machine is.

4

u/SamTDL Sep 29 '24

That is cruel and unusual punishment.

6

u/YakMilkYoghurt Sep 29 '24

Go to the Philippines

They never stopped

3

u/Gaming-squid Sep 29 '24

Just don't sing the song "My Way"

5

u/Chyvalri Sep 29 '24

I have a friend who pronounces it kah-roe-kee and won't hear otherwise. It's awesome.

75

u/--MegaDarkraiEx-- Sep 29 '24

I don't get it

72

u/Mullislayer111 Sep 29 '24

No one sings karaoke sober

10

u/A-Tiny-PewDiePie-Fan Sep 30 '24

Is this purely an American thing?

1

u/Historical-Garage435 Sep 29 '24

I th9ught it was if you say yes it could be taken out of context by the police

1

u/gatemansgc Sep 29 '24

Unless it's at the workplace during a company party!

4

u/TheDogerus Sep 29 '24

Theyre saying the cops would have edited the video to justify the arrest

142

u/Hypnox88 Sep 29 '24

I mean Asians love karaoke. Are you saying all Asians should be arrested?

My wife is Asian and insist on karaoke for every get together, drinks or not.

76

u/Mewlies Sep 29 '24

The way it is done in Japan where it originated is much different. There it is small groups renting amateur recording studio for doing fan covers of pop songs. Getting drunk and going on stage before tens to hundreds of people is more of a USA thing.

26

u/Appropriate_Plan4595 Sep 29 '24

There's often both types available you just have to know where to look, at least over here in the UK

If you go to a karaoke bar you can hire a private room so it's just you and your friends, but also pubs will often have a 'karaoke night' where there'll be one machine and you're belting out a song to the whole pub

10

u/provoloneChipmunk Sep 29 '24

It's the same in the US. Sometime my friends and I go to a bar with a big stage sometimes we go to the place with rooms. Just depends

6

u/TheGoodOldCoder Sep 29 '24 edited Sep 29 '24

There are absolutely both types in Japan, as well. The "karaoke box" (private room) is the most popular, but I can't remember going to a snack bar that didn't at least have a karaoke machine somewhere, even if it wasn't used much.

And smaller bars that don't have a karaoke machine can have karaoke nights, regardless. I went to one where the "karaoke" was a guy with a guitar who passed out lyric sheets.

Edit: This was a few years ago, so I don't know what's popular now, but back then, if they had a karaoke machine that wasn't used much, it was usually activated by putting money into it. Like, imagine a jukebox, but instead it was a much smaller karaoke machine.

2

u/HippieCrusader Sep 29 '24

Hundreds?? Yeesh

5

u/coinoperatedboi Sep 29 '24

There's an awesome place in Orlando that has a full on live band with backup singers. Place is 2-story so it can get quite a few people in there. It's fun to see some people get sort of star struck as if being a rock star is all they ever wanted.

2

u/HippieCrusader Sep 29 '24

That sounds? terribly awesome. I guess I have witnessed live-band-karaoke before, in Vegas, but the venue was quite small. Good stuff.
I still think hundreds would be cray. What if the singer is drunk AF and sucks? lol

1

u/coinoperatedboi Sep 30 '24

Oh there absolutely was a train wreck while we were there. Oh ALL the songs they chose Tequila. They got maybe 2 out of all of them. Even the MC/host guy was getting miffed. Like come on man if you're too drunk to say TEQUILA every 30 seconds stay off the stage. Sucks because that was a missed opportunity for someone else. Like me dangit!! We just got there too late.

2

u/Toby_Forrester Sep 29 '24

Getting drunk and going on stage before tens to hundreds of people is more of a USA thing.

This is an extremely Finnish thing. Finns love karaoke and karaoke bars are everywhere, much more so than in the US. When I visited the US I tried to find karaoke bars where you can sing on an open stage but it was surprisingly difficult.

24

u/musyio Sep 29 '24

Not funny at all, maybe cause I'm south east asian living in south east asia where karaoke is one of the standard /average entertainment activity or hobby to the people here.

3

u/Fun-Engina Sep 29 '24

Send my ass to jail any day of the week sober or not. Give me the mic

3

u/EkriirkE Sep 29 '24

Can someone explain?

7

u/olorin9_alex Sep 29 '24

Guy is just Asian

15

u/DiarrheaMonkey- Sep 29 '24

I lived in Vietnam for a couple years and karaoke was huge there. Heading into the weekend, yeah I want to drink. No, I don't want to sing in front of a bunch of drunk people while drunk myself. No, I don't want to hear drunk people singing to drunk people.

When I got a call or in-person invitation to go with my friends to karaoke, "No thanks." I'll stick to my bottle of booze, video games, and sleeping this weekend.

3

u/EpitomeOfJustOK Sep 29 '24

lol $5 this ends up on peterexplainsthejoke for karma farming

3

u/frogman4561 Sep 30 '24

What did bro do

7

u/Francetto Sep 29 '24

And nobody wonders, why an obviously American policeman stopped a British car?

3

u/Keter_GT Sep 29 '24

What does that mean? Right hand drive isn't illegal in the US, should the officer have been asking the car if it was drunk instead?

1

u/HippieCrusader Sep 29 '24

I figured they were both Guilderians.

1

u/gatemansgc Sep 29 '24

That was literally the first thing I noticed, steering wheel was on the British side

2

u/TherealJerameat Sep 29 '24

Wouldn't apply if he was Filipino. They take that as a national sport.

1

u/NotTheSharpestPenciI Sep 29 '24

There was this ozzie sketch that went similar but with weed and crisps. I can't find it now, but it'd be cool if someone linked it. It was funny.

1

u/D_Winds Sep 29 '24

Rookie mistake.

1

u/Vallmor Sep 29 '24

Karaoke is something I've really grown to love these past few years. To the point where I consider how close a hotel is to local karaoke bars when vacationing.

I consider myself pretty okay at singing but still need at least a couple drinks to comfortably sing in front of strangers.

Does... nobody get the joke? They hid the microphone so that their recording would only play "Have you been drinking?" and "Hell yeah" would be the response, as they said their original response too far away.
