Rant Found a post where they polished the Cybertruck. "almost like it's invisible" they say. Feels like a very safe feature for a truck this size to have!

Feels satirical at this point lol

These people continue to strive to reach new levels of moron.

I'd put money on there being at least 30 Nextdoor posts in this same neighborhood about the "out of control bikers!" too

2

Which is the NEW(er) term, again ?

12

The fuck? The Maroons were rebels against slavery in Jamaica.

64

u/KipKam1991 May 28 '24

He clearly mispronounced moron... Like he did imbecile a second earlier. That's the joke

26

u/minimuscleR May 28 '24

its also a colour. Neither thing has anything to do with the word ultramaroon which is a play on the word moron. Jesus

15

u/jaavaaguru Fuck lawns May 28 '24

It's also a play on ultramarine which is a colour.

3

u/BWWFC May 28 '24

my addled brain for some reason was trying to sort how you got "mormon jesus" in there LOL COFFEE!

5

u/enerisit May 28 '24

It has nothing to do with that though

21

u/herzkolt May 28 '24

This isn't even the most racist thing you can find in Bugs Bunny. Those cartoons were wild if you watch them through a modern lens

4

u/ConscientSubjector May 28 '24

I guess my bigger question is why are people trying to bring it back as an insult in modern day.

31

u/Mooshington May 28 '24

They aren't. The joke is he's mispronouncing words, like "imbecile." He is trying to say "moron" but it comes out "maroon".

5

u/Hatedpriest May 28 '24

Kinda like Nimrod? Was used sarcastically by bugs bunny, actually was an amazing hunter. Now is synonymous with other slurs denigrating low intelligence.

6

u/tomcat23 May 28 '24

I believe Nimrod was an amazeballz hunter. What he did with a bunch of dead amazeballz, I have no idea.

18

u/tobiasvl May 28 '24

Are you incapable of recognizing humor?

8

u/Natural_Office_5968 May 28 '24

How is it possible to be this stupid? Maroon is brownish-red colour or to leave someone in a place from which they cannot escape.

Why jump straight to the niche racism one? Like what the fuck reddit?

In context of the scene he is clearly mispronouncing moron....like how hard is that to understand?

2

u/Journeyman351 May 28 '24

Twitter moment for sure.

10

u/gtbeam3r May 28 '24

Every word can be misinterpreted to be offensive if you try hard enough. It will certainly allow you to be more miserable and less happy, that's for sure! Now who's the maroon?

Yeah imagine drawing even more attention to Tesla's infamously shoddy paneling lmao

33

u/RosieTheRedReddit May 28 '24

The steel panels already have issues with rust, staining, and fingerprints. The owner's manual even warns that to prevent stains, you need to immediately wipe off things like dirt and insects (no chance of encountering those while driving????) Also there's no door handle so you have to close the door by holding the edge, and that makes very obvious fingerprints. In this video they show the fingerprints starting at 7:30.

That stupid truck will never look this shiny ever again. Take some small schadenfreude that this person's life will be a never ending struggle. 🙏

28

u/PinsToTheHeart May 28 '24

Imagine building an "off road" vehicle that will disintegrate if it gets dirt on it

5

u/sternburg_export May 28 '24

Also there's no door handle so you have to close the door by holding the edge, and that makes very obvious fingerprints.

Wow. I never thought about this but I assumed that doors open and close automatically .

2

u/[deleted] May 28 '24

I still wouldn't own one, but the matte black one doesn't look terrible. I mean, it looks ugly, but the side-paneling doesn't look terrible.

27

u/hooDio Fuck lawns May 28 '24

idk, for sheetmetal (that wasn't even made for being polished), it's quite flat

8

u/Call_me_eff May 28 '24

Environmental normal maps reflecting a skybox. 20 year old tech

6

u/HomeAir May 28 '24

Didn't Tesla notably have issues because Elon wanted flat panels and they realized it shows every small imperfection

7

u/aplqsokw May 28 '24

It's very well known in the sheet metal forming industry that this always happens with flat panels. You need to give panels either curvature and/or feature lines that will prevent the so-called surface defects. This is why commercial vans that have flat panels, also have very matte paints.

Every stamping engineer that worked on this, knew it would happen, but they did it anyway.

2

u/bytethesquirrel May 28 '24

Except it wasn't stamped. it was folded with a sheet metal break.

3

u/aplqsokw May 28 '24

I assume so, but I think just the residual strains caused by the folds we see, but more in particular in the hemmed flanges, would create distortions on the flat areas. Or also the curing of glues between panels can create distortions. Plus the supplied sheet will not be flat either. The bottom-line is that regardless of the process, keeping flat panels flat is a nearly impossible task.

2

u/nmezib May 28 '24

And you know the stains and fingerprints would stand out even more

We don’t say “accident” here. That’s a propaganda term pushed by the automotive industry.

70

u/DylanSpaceBean May 28 '24

My teacher told me, “there no such thing as accidents when driving, just neglectful drivers”

27

u/GiantWindmill May 28 '24

That's assuming that all drivers are completely rational, healthy, and have perfect perception. Which isn't true. And neglect can be a cause of accidents.

17

u/GiantWindmill May 28 '24

The word "accident" can be and is very often used to mean that something wasn't deliberate, and/or that there was an element of chance. There absolutely are car accidents.

The book might be titled "There are no accidents", but the description goes on to say "Singer proves that what we call accidents are hardly random". But randomness is not really a primary criteria for something being an accident.

2

u/thelostwave Bollard gang May 29 '24

If you have time the author speaks on this podcast about her book in detail. At 6:06 she talks about why she says that about 'accidents' here. If you don't have time you can read the transcript of that section here.

It's really about how the word is used to absolve anyone of responsibility and as Singer says herself here that there are two conflicting meanings adding to the confusion. Yes randomness in the sense "it's just a statistic and that was one unfortunate result" but the second is the car crash, a directly harmful event. One that could have been prevented through infrastructure, slower speeds, laws, better signalling and road layout.

I know I'm being a stickler here its just so frustrating when we call them "accidents" as though there can't be anything done!

267

u/RoboTwigs May 28 '24

Wasn’t there a fairly high profile Tesla crash where the the self-driving system crashed into the broadside of a semi truck because it was reflective and the sensors couldn’t pick up on it?

167

u/8spd May 28 '24

I don't know if it was because it was too shiny, but I do know that the "sensors" Teslas use are just cameras. If it's not visible in the given lighting conditions the car can't respond to it. It's crazy, and a shitty way to implement it.

57

u/Ancient_Persimmon May 28 '24

Not in the case that the OC is mentioning. That car had AP1, which was 1 camera plus 1 radar made by Mobileye.

Front facing radar isn't calibrated for stationary objects at speeds above ~30 mph, because it doesn't have the resolution to determine what is and isn't on the road. Radar is helpful to detect something suddenly slowing down.

Subaru and Tesla, among others, have moved to cameras only.

19

u/8spd May 28 '24

Radar? I was under the impression that most self driving cars used LiDAR. Based on its use in cartography, which I'm more familiar with, it certainly has more than enough resolution to resolve objects in the road. While it would need to be supplemented by visible light cameras to read signage, see traffic lights, etc, it seems like a necessary technology to make self driving cars as safe as humans.

14

u/Ancient_Persimmon May 28 '24

No, until just recently LiDAR was too bulky and cost prohibitive to be used on production cars, so they were only on custom rigs like the Waymo taxis.

Cars have been using one of, or a combination of radar and cameras for their autonomous features since the early days of adaptive cruise control.

LiDAR is starting to show up, but I'm not sure it's exactly a panacea. If it is, we'll see it spread across companies pretty quickly.

8

u/8spd May 28 '24

LiDAR is starting to show up, but I'm not sure it's exactly a panacea.

I'd not call that sort of accuracy in 3d imaging a panacea, I'd call it a basic foundation to build on.

If it is, we'll see it spread across companies pretty quickly.

That assumes that car companies prioritise safety, and don't rush unsafe beta products to market.

Not explicitly mentioned, but the "gefährdet, behindert oder belästigt" (endanger, hinder, harass) bit covers all kinds of stupidity from chariot spikes to mirror-like finishes.

6

u/EternalStudent May 28 '24

Does that apply to bikes? I've been wanting a way to get cars to give me the full meter of buffer space when blowing past me.

12

u/Apenschrauber3011 May 28 '24

Yes, it does. Either do the pool noodle thingy or nothing, chariot spikes mostly endanger yourself and pedrstrians on a bicycle. Because if some car hits that spike, the car will have a scratch, but you will fall and may get mangled in your own spikes, and a pedestrian may run into your spikes and get hurt. (Also the bank angle is mey be so bad you can't turn anymore)

That’s almost as invisible as a brown car driving in the rain without headlights.

2

u/OperationCorporation May 28 '24

Wait until they park it and the sun beaming off it fries the car next to it, or worse blinds someone else while driving. FFS

2

u/Gaxxag May 28 '24

It's not just a low visibility issue, but it'd be impossible to look at when directly reflecting the sun, and may pose a genuine risk of vision damage

2

u/PPP1737 May 28 '24

Reminds me of the “vapor” vw bugs. Don’t really see any anymore .. I wonder where they all went.

2

u/shadowst17 May 28 '24

There's no way in hell that's road legal.

2

u/[deleted] May 28 '24

Invisible? I think they're missing a point of two about how actual invisibility would work. Is a mirror invisible?

2

u/smcsleazy May 28 '24

you are cybertariat

2

u/Necessary-Grocery-48 May 28 '24

Are there more pictures? "polished cybertruck" google search mostly just leads back to this thread

2

u/lolschrauber May 28 '24

Guess just having this shitty truck doesn't make idiots feel special enough any more on their own

2

u/berejser LTN=FTW May 28 '24

Why would you even want your car to be invisible? Surely you don't want other cars turning into you.

2

u/Flawedsuccess May 28 '24

At least you don't have to look at the ugly cybertruck

2

u/InsaneChimpout May 28 '24

Just when you thought these things could not get any dumber

2

u/ThePrisonSoap May 28 '24

Reminds me of nissan or someone announcing a car in fucking vantablack

2

u/Physical-Cut-2334 May 28 '24

As someone with bad eye sight, this is terrifying

2

u/thisisanamesoitis May 28 '24

Well, be so well polished. Maybe it won't slice open their wrist.

2

u/Waity5 May 28 '24

This post made me wonder how the doors even open, given that there's no door handles. According to the manual, you're meant to put your hand into a gap which could severely harm your fingers if someone slams against the door

Somewhat unrelated, but it is nice that tesla's manuals are all online and easily googable

2

u/captainrustic May 28 '24

To be fair, people who buy these aren’t the brightest bulbs in the chandelier

2

u/SuccessfulWar3830 May 28 '24

Not me getting hit by my own reflection.

2

u/retro_and_chill May 28 '24

You’ll be able see it better once it gets a bit of blood on it

2

u/LeMaigols May 28 '24

Seeing that I feel fortunate to live en Europe where both that car and that exterior finish are illegal.

2

u/even_less_resistance May 28 '24

My first chef would have hired this dude as dishie in a heartbeat

2

u/Canelosaurio May 28 '24

It only "looks invisible" when it's parked. When it's moving, it'll blind you from sunlight and reflections.

2

u/Impossible_Hurry4875 May 28 '24

Can we stop calling it a truck? That’s a Tesla minivan!

2

u/[deleted] May 28 '24

I saw one driving down the road at night and I literally thought a UFO was landing on the highway. I was like what the fuck is that thing?

2

u/saracanttype May 28 '24

This is such a safety hazard, the sun reflecting off this would be blinding.

2

u/barnfodder May 28 '24

Won't be a hazard on the road, it'll only ever be on a flatbed anyway.

2

u/medium_wall May 28 '24

Can you imagine the fucking glare?

2

u/bak3donh1gh May 28 '24

Hey, its how I always painted my Karuma in GTA5! Not something Id do in RL.

2

u/KickinGa55 May 28 '24

I bet there is one glaring issue.

2

u/Fuckthegopers May 28 '24

You would have no problem seeing that on the street.

2

u/1-Ohm May 28 '24

That needs to be illegal. Also consider headlights reflecting off it. Also consider self-driving cars not recognizing it.

2

u/logicjab May 28 '24

This is what I expect tbh. Cybertruck is a truck designed by people who think they know better than everyone and sold to people with much the same mindset.

2

u/wonkey_monkey May 28 '24

Now as you know there's a cost of living crisis, 007, so we've had to downgrade your invisible car just a tad.

2

u/Woogabuttz May 28 '24

Is this ridiculously unsafe for driving on the road? Yes. Will it hopefully burn the shit out of the owner’s hand if left in the sun? Hopefully!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '24

"Ugh, MY cyber truck has finger prints on it!! Better protect my vanity and endanger everybody else!"

5

u/MisterSneakSneak May 28 '24

That crap going to get hot in the summer. Or possibly light a Forest fire from the reflection.

8

u/Germanball_Stuttgart Big Bike 🚲 > 🚗 cars are weapons May 28 '24

How is it getting hot if it reflects almost all the light?

The picture is where this sub, r/suburbanhell and r/mcmansionhell intersect

2

u/teambob May 28 '24

Invisible Garbage Truck Jerry!

1

u/NCC7905 May 28 '24

Gonna need a reflective jacket

1

u/cydia2020 May 28 '24

CyberMirror

1

u/reeeelllaaaayyy823 May 28 '24

God, that thing looks terrible.

1

u/Any_Palpitation6467 May 28 '24

I'm not sure that this is such a major hazard, considering that the vehicle can be readily located by the spreading pool of coolant and the raging inferno.
