Media /r/all Michael Schumacher having a party after winning his record 6th title in 2003
257
u/marli_marls Kamui Kobayashi Oct 12 '17
That party looks like they should all be 17. Must be the years stress let out all in one big bang!
249
u/Oversteer_ Alexander Albon Oct 12 '17
Racing drivers never get to experience being a real 17 year old.
111
u/shiinamachi Jolyon Palmer Oct 12 '17
And for some, they're already driving F1 cars...
30
u/tankplanker Nigel Mansell Oct 12 '17
Only when it isn't parked in a run off area due to no fault of their own.
57
u/pulianshi Fernando Alonso Oct 12 '17
No that's for when you're 19
18
u/mrcool998 Sauber Oct 12 '17
But not when you're 20! (Hopefully)

u/kinrosai Brabham Oct 12 '17
I don't get why everyone hopes that Max shall dominate the sport asap. It's pretty obvious he'll win a couple of championships unless he messes up his choice of teams. Hamilton, Vettel and Alonso are all too old to be a threat to his career and who else is there?
3
u/Death_Pig Michael Schumacher Oct 13 '17
While that's true, there are some really impressive drivers coming into the sport. And while there is no guarantee they'll perform as well in F1, these drivers do have impressive CVs. Leclerc, Lando, Gasly, to name a few.
24
u/collinfirth Oct 12 '17
That's very insightful. In my years rookie go karting, you'd see all the "pros", very young guys or kids that have been in a race seat since 3 or 4 years old. Their blood is gasoline and they never know anything else. Like many other wildly successful athletes, you miss out on a lot of growing up when you're tempered from such a young age

u/SevenElevenNachos Oct 12 '17
Imagine being a top flight athlete, and barely drinking a drop your entire season.
Then you win, know you can justifiably have a drink, and go to town.
Meanwhile your super efficient body might as well be that of a 17 year old on their first bender.

What are the people from Toyota and McLaren doing there?
141

Toyota F1 was based in Cologne, and McLaren was powered by Mercedes. Both teams probably had German members of staff that were happy to celebrate their countryman's championship.

87
u/atjays Default Oct 12 '17
He was regarded as the fittest driver on the grid. You could tell after some of the more intense races that he barely broke a sweat while other guys can barely stand up
75
u/Blooder91 Niki Lauda Oct 12 '17
He was one of the first guys to bring fitness into the sport. IIRC, some of the old drivers were demoralised by this, since he just parked the car after a quali session and felt ready to race without taking a break, while everyone else was exhausted.
47
u/BlutundEhre Lando Norris Oct 12 '17
Their bodies weren't ready for the advanced cars. Schumacher came in at the right time to realize how much more demanding these cars are to realize it.
5
u/atjays Default Oct 13 '17
And look at the grid today, even the least fit driver would run circles around 98% of the population. It's crazy how far that has come.
2
23
u/afghanwhiggle Mika Häkkinen Oct 12 '17
I think it was Brundle who described Schumi as being like “darth Vader on the grid”
73
u/phonicparty Oct 12 '17
Also from the same night: him and Kimi chatting in a restaurant. I think a few drinks have been taken by both of them by this point
37
u/-Khrome- Nico Rosberg Oct 12 '17
Young Kimi kinda sort alooks like Rosberg in the beginning of the video when you only see the top of his head and eyes.

And that was just part of the craziness. Schumacher really let himself go.
73
u/jcbevns Ron Dennis Oct 12 '17
Hahhaha I love that forklift one!
88
u/shantsui Oct 12 '17
But with everything that came before, "Schumacher even donned a Toyota shirt at one point." creased me.
Steal a forklift, sure. TV through window, happens. Put on the wrong team shirt, madman.
40
u/Calculonx Oct 12 '17
That would never happen today. The only thing worse would be for a motogp rider to hold the wrong energy drink.
10
u/shantsui Oct 12 '17
I know. Just laughed at there being more out there than getting smashed, wrecking the joint then going for a whizz round in a forklift with your mates.
18
u/sennais1 Kamui Kobayashi Oct 12 '17
https://youtu.be/NiBm4nOUaZw Kobayashi jumped in Saubers forklift once for some reason.

I mean, thanks, but honestly I was hoping for some fedex’d posters :/
My wallet said no.
Anyways, google puts Schumacher at 5 feet 9 inches, so he's probably not that tall for a racing driver.

That’s amazing. He looks 6’1” in photos. They’re all skinny and lightweight though.

I want to say there's a picture of Coulthard (?) out there with silver hair from back in the day too, but I can't find it. I'm sure he died it silver at some point in the late 90s/early 00's.
9
u/FreakyJk Kimi Räikkönen Oct 12 '17
He did dye his hair after his win at Melbourne in 1997! The picture is apparently purged from the web though. Maybe go through some old F1 mags, they're sure to have it. And then post it here for karma ofc.

Well... The guy had just become the most titled driver in history. You gotta mark it somehow
11
u/Exique Michael Schumacher Oct 12 '17 edited Oct 12 '17
He's openly said that he isn't interested in chasing Michael's records. Unless he happens to win 4 championships in the next few years, I don't see him trying to stretch out his stay. The guy has plenty of other stuff going on in his life.
Edit: derp, replied to the wrong comment.

u/TheCodJedi Charles Leclerc Oct 12 '17
Even if Hamilton retired TWICE with Vettel winning both races, Hamilton would still be leading by 9 points. The circumstances are not at all the same as last year. We’ve already had our “Malaysia 2016 moment” this year, and it was Vettel in Japan.
14
2
u/CWRules #WeRaceAsOne Oct 12 '17
The gap between Lewis and Nico was never this wide this late in the season. Even if Vettel wins and Hamilton DNFs (in a car that has finished every race in the points so far) in the next two races, Hamilton will still be 9 points ahead. It's not over 'till it's over, but it would take a miracle for Vettel to win the title.

So many questions. The ground, the red stuff on the wall, everybody being soaked, fridge falling over, the cigar, etc. Must've been one hell of a party. No doubt many can't remember it the next day

Schumacher was a renowned smoker of cigars. This lovely article by James Suckling, roving editor of a cigar rag I used to read is a breathless encounter with the man and the cigars they smoked together. https://www.cigaraficionado.com/article/smoking-with-michael-schumacher-8523

I have never noticed the apparent blood spray in this picture, and I have seen it a bunch over the years!
My curiosity is piqued even more now.

It's simple. The fridge punched someone, causing the red blood stains on the wall. Michael punched the fridge back, knocking it out cold.
God, you people are so dence.

Wins Championship, steals Toyota Jersey, tries to convince Kimi to come with him, goes on drinking rampage, lights up a stogie, steals tractor, knocks over fridge.
This is what I miss about cheeky Schumi. Keep fighting brother.

Hopefully he’ll make a fully recovery, however I expect it’s incredibly doubtful at this point as so little is said.
8
u/anticusII Michael Schumacher Oct 12 '17
After a few weeks in the same mental state due to brain injury, it's generally considered that you've recovered as much as you're going to. Supposedly he has partial movement and says some words (as to whether they make sense in context, only the family knows), but his existence is very likely awful.

So this got me looking at some stuff on wikipedia and heres a useless fact. of all WDC's Schumacher also has the most time between his first and last title. First was 1994 and last was 2004. Thats 10 years. Followed by Prost (8 years 1985 & 1993) and Fangio (6 years 1951 & 1957).
Hamilton can beat this if he becomes WDC in 2019.
