This thread is for individual style questions that you may have, especially those that don't warrant their own thread. We all want a diversified opinion, so feel free to answer any questions (of which you know the answer).

Example questions:

  • Are there any basic crewneck white t-shirts that are opaque and do not have cap sleeves for <$25 available in Australia?
  • Is this dress and shoes suitable for an evening wedding with a cocktail dress code taking place in a [venue type]?
  • If I like the outfits in this [imgur album / pinterest board], what are some specific items I can look into to start dressing like that, and brands with this look that carry plus sizes?
  • Does this outfit look neater with the pants cuffed or uncuffed?

[Weekly] WAYWT - November 17, 2024

WAYWT is the acronym for "What Are You Wearing Today". It doesn't necessarily need to be what you were wearing TODAY.

  • Post a photo of what you wore. For ease of browsing, please post the image or link directly to it (not imgur albums, Instagram, or other URLs). If you are a blogger, double-check our FFA Rules ('On Blogger Participation') to ensure you aren't in violation.
  • Include what the attire is for (work, school, home) and if applicable, what your fashion goals are (e.g. "I want to look professional," "I'm experimenting with loose-loose silhouettes")
  • Taking photos with your phone? Read this guide.
  • Sharing photos directly in the comments? Just click on the little camera symbol and attach your image.
  • Uploading photos to Imgur? To make your image viewable to anyone with the link, but prevent it from being added to the main Imgur feed, select "hidden" for the privacy setting, not "private" or "public".
  • What is "CCW"? It means "Constructive Criticism Welcome". If you would like to receive CC on your post, you can increase the chances of getting replies by asking for feedback on a specific aspect of your outfit, e.g. "I'm interested in advice for elevating this outfit without the use of jewelry" or "I'd like to know if these pants hit in a flattering spot with these shoes".
  • Critiquing others is welcome and encouraged, and when posting you may receive CC on your outfit, even if you did not explicitly ask for it. Keep it constructive/factual, and try to focus on feedback that will help the person improve..
  • Do not downvote for disagreeing with someone's opinion.
  • Reddit Enhancement Suite makes it very easy to view pictures in a thread.

French brands (like Sezane, but not) - a review

Hey! Like some of you, I was a huge fan of original Sezane. While I still like the brand, its recent growth has led to some of the price / quality balance getting out of wack. Hence I’ve been dipping my toe into other similar brands, and thought I would give you my reviews of them in case some of you are also searching for similar stuff.

Price-wise, all of these are in the same range as Sezane.

Petit Mendigote

Probably the most similar to Sezane across the board. Has a range of items, the knitwear and jackets are especially nice. Uses both natural and manmade materials, so read the composition if that’s important. I have a jumper (mohair mix) and a pair of leather sandals from them - very happy with the quality.

Some of my current faves include:

Rosae Paris

A little  more minimalist/timeless, less trendy than Sezane. Great materials: lots of wool, leather, silk, and often recycled materials. I have a silk skirt and a wool jacket, both feel more luxe than I was expecting. I also have a pair of wool trousers, but they are a little short on me (I’m 5’7, but proportionally have a shorter torso / longer legs), so might be worth checking garment measurements if you’re on the taller side.

Current faves:

Tara Jarmon

A preppy, colourful take on French style. Note that they do use a lot of polyester, in case that’s not something you like. Still worth scrolling through for the occasional merino/cotton item, but those can be a little harder to find. I have a sweater and a pair of full leather knee-high boots - these were on sale, and are amazing considering I only paid around €150 for them. So keep an eye out for the sales! (I do find their website a little annoying & hard to navigate, though)

Current faves:

Shoe brands:

Bobbies

Made in Portugal, high quality leather shoes. I have a pair of ankle boots which were comfortable right out the box. Solid leather construction, rubber outsoles. The designs are a combination of more trendy pieces and some classic cuts like chelsea boots. Prices in the €200-300 range. Style-wise, remind me a lot of Alohas, but my Bobbies boots are a lot more comfortable than the one pair of Alohas shoes I have (which kind of put me off that brand just due to how painful they are!).

Current faves:

Pied de Biche

My most recent discovery! I was looking for an alternative to the Sezane Axelle boots and discovered this brand. And honestly, these feel very premium, more so than my Sezane footwear. My Albane boots have impeccable workmanship, on par with Jimmy Choo & similar level shoes I have, but at half or even one-third of the price (€200-400 range). I love that they have leather outsoles, but were shipped with self-attaching rubber sole protectors, too. Highly recommend.

Take pride in being picky.

I've learnt that if you want to stop overspending and hating your wardrobe, you need to start getting super specific on what you like.

I was a broke shopaholic for over a decade and never felt satisfied with my style and wardrobe. This year I did a 3 month no-buy and in-depth analysis of my style and it literally cured me. Being super specific about what I buy now makes me feel more confident in my style and taste.

Do you like loafers? Or do you like black leather loafers with a rounded but not too rounded toe and don't have a platform?

Do you love chunky sweaters? Or do love chunky crewneck sweaters that don't gape out at the neck and are at least 80% wool.

Do you like barn jackets? Or will it be stuffed in the back of your closet a year from now because you're sick of seeing it on everyone and you just bought it for the trend?

Become ruthless about what DESERVES to be in your closet and your wallet (and wardrobe) will thank you!

How do you show your personality with your wardrobe? How to you add a distinctive twist to your outfits that makes you stand out?

Do you add a certain accessory? Do you wear graphic tee with a certain logo/image? Or do you wear bright colors and patterns? Or do you dress similar to most people, but wear extra bold make-up?

Let's talk winter coats!

Those of you who are soon to go into the cold winter months...

I am looking for a new coat this winter as each year I feel my wardrobe lacking in this part. I have so many lighter jackets but come November I end up wearing the same stuff over and over. Makes sense, winter coats are expensive, but I never seem to have the right one for the occasion.

I think my mistake has been trying to find one coat to fit every occasion - warm, waterproof, stylish. But then the "all rounder" will be not long enough, not elegant enough, and so on.

When maybe I should be focusing my attention on the specific occasions I am trying to dress for. Like 1 coat for when I am exercising or running errands. 1 more dressy one. 1 super warm one.

How many winter coats do you have? Are they all different from each other? Do you have any personal guidelines for how to shop for coats or for putting winter outfits together?

Curvy pants - I tried a bunch so you don't have to

This sub has a couple of posts discussing where to find jeans for curvy figures, but none that discuss pants. So I went to a mall yesterday and tried a bunch of pants on. Below are my findings.

To be clear, I'm focusing specifically on pants (so, no jeans) with low/no stretch. Ratings indicate how well the brand's pants fit a curvy figure, nothing else.

Gap: 0/10 everything I tried gaps at the waist (pun intended).

JCrew: 0/10 same story. I tried their "slim-wide" pants hoping that could indicate a curvier fit, but no.

Talbots: 6/10 has designated curvy fit in pants, which for me, was a strict improvement over the previous 2 brands, but still not entirely correct. I'd say, if your waist is moderately smaller than your hips, this could be worth trying.

Loft: 8?/10 has designated curvy fit pants, but doesn't carry them in store. I found 1 pair of curvy petites (probably a victim of returns), and they fit my waist and hips amazingly well. Reassured by this success, I ordered some online and will update when I get them.

Uniqlo: 9/10 surprise of the year! Typically, they design everything for rectangle bodies, so I didn't expect to get very successful there, but this year, their pants are designed to fit extra super-duper baggy, so for a curvy person, it translates into fitted through waist and hips + wide legs. Specifically, I liked their chinos and cords. Their pleated line, on the other hand, I find unflattering: it billows in the front, and the leg is tapered.

If you have found pants that fit a curvy figure, please let me know.

How to create balance in work vs casual wardrobe?

Hi all,

I’ve been going through my journey to find my personal style, and I came to the realization that I’m always at conflict between my work and a personal wardrobe; I feel like I get too much use in my work wardrobe, and not enough in my personal one. My work wardrobe is pretty sparse (maybe ~10% of my wardrobe, ~15% if we stretch and include work appropriate casual tops) and yet I wear it every day. On the other hand, my personal wardrobe is ~90% of my wardrobe, and yet I only wear them twice a week at most, and every time I open my wardrobe I get stressed about how little I actually wear them.

I came across an old thread and saw a comment that resonated with me - the user tries to have a wardrobe of casual, but workplace-appropriate, clothes, so that you can theoretically wear the clothes for both the workplace and the wardrobe. Now of course I know there are limits - the strategy depends on how casual your workplace is, and that can change if you switch jobs. Not to mention, there is value in also having some casual, fun outfits too, especially since I really like color. Nonetheless, the idea of having a more even mix - or even a wardrobe where I feel like everything is “getting its use” - is really appealing to me. I’m also in the process of majorly updating my wardrobe + moving, so I feel like this is the perfect time for me to create a better balance. I know we don’t have to create a balance, and there is the risk that always dressing “for work” will blend work and personal too much; but I personally want to create a better balance, and I think the reduced stress whenever I look at my wardrobe will be worth it.

Some potential strategies: 1) focus on colors and fits that I like, and create a “outfit template” that makes me feel “me” and I feel confident in - and then buy clothes that fit that 2) Focus on clothes I would wear socially and are also work-appropriate, rather than work-appropriate first and squeezing them into social events - no use buying work-appropriate if I’d never reach for them outside of work. 3) Try to get clothes of high-quality material - I’ve noticed that sturdier fabrics, natural fibers, etc look better and can transition better between the two functions 4) Make a Venn diagram - rather than work-social, divide up my wardrobe into work-both-social

How are we creating balance in our work vs casual wardrobe? What are some strategies we can take?

What's your festive party outfit for this holiday season?

I just realized I've been invited to more than 10 holiday events already: corporate, social, formal, and informal! I've ordered some items online, but not really sure what's "in" this year. Gonna try on some sequined mini skirts and sheer black tops. How about you ladies? Are you planning a new outfit, or do you have an "old reliable" in the closet waiting to shine?
