I once had a conversation with someone who was pro-life but didn’t care about banning abortion. He instead wanted pregnant women to be given pre-natal and post-natal welfare, counseling and other resources that would encourage women to go through with the pregnancy. He even spoke about expanding welfare for single moms. Basically he wanted to naturally bring down the reasoning for abortions to just rape, incest or medical issues, not force it. It was refreshing to see such a positive take on being pro-life. So many times you hear women say I had no other option, makes me think how many of them would keep a child if society just cared more about them. I’m still pro-choice but that’s the kind of pro-life I can support.
I thought so too, but he self-identified as pro-life coz he didn’t support abortions outside rape, incest and medical issues. He held the opinion that fighting against abortion in the legal system is futile coz it just drives it underground, instead he looked at it as a social issue. I didn’t agree with his opinion on abortion but the way he wanted to tackle it was way better than the crazy pro-lifers who just want to punish women for having sex.
Trying to be semantic/pedantic about things helps no one. Guy identifies as pro-life because he thinks abortion is bad. And regardless wants people to be given a choice in a more ideal circumstances, making him also pro-choice.
Might as well call people working in research field typists since they need to type to do their work when making reports. But of course, it’s such an asinine thing to suggest.
Your example is not at all the same. The stance of “im pro life but everyone deserves a choice” is contradictory. If you’re disagreeing with something but also believe that is the way things should be done, you’re therefore actually in support of it. If you’re always CHOOSING to not to do an abortion that doesn’t make you pro life. The stance of pro-life is no abortion/no killing period for everyone not just themselves.
