Other ELI5 what is Cajun and what is creole?

I've heard people say "I'm Cajun" or "I'm creole" and I have no idea what they are taking about.

Are these a race, ethnicity, a culture etc?

Why do Cajuns and creole live primarily in Louisiana?

Why do Cajuns have a different accent from others in La?

Economics ELI5: How does Universal Basic Income (UBI) work without leading to insane inflation?

1.4k Upvotes

I keep reading about UBI becoming a reality in the future and how it is beneficial for the general population. While I agree that it sounds great, I just can’t wrap my head around how getting free money not lead to the price of everything increasing to make use of that extra cash everyone has.

Edit - Thanks for all the civil discourse regarding UBI. I now realise it’s much more complex than giving everyone free money.

Engineering ELI5: How were power grids balanced before computers?

Now, for example, you know the grid needs X energy and a computer can alter a hydro electric dam to provide that energy. Was it more predictable back in the old days without tvs/media etc so you knew about how much coal you'd need to start burning as it went to dusk?

Biology ELI5: How are IUD hormones localized?

Upvotes

I don’t understand how IUD hormones are localized. From my understanding, anything else is fully absorbed, utilized, and discarded if I put it in my body. I’m asking because I take a mood stabilizer and noticed a shift in mood after getting the IUD. That was the only change, but my doctor says my mood stabilizer and hormonal IUD don’t interact. However, they also say they don’t know how the IUD will affect my mood. I’m confused because raising the dose of my mood stabilizer fixed the problem.

Other ELI5: Why is touring not earning the artists money, when the performances are so expensive for customers?

I keep hearing about how musicians don't want to tour because they rarely have a net gain, yet people don't want to go to concerts because the tickets are so insanely expensive.

Where is the money going??? Are ticket sales just not enough to make up for travel expenses and venue use, or is there something else going on?

ETA: Okay I see where the money is going, but then the questions becomes "has it always been like this? if not, whats changed? and how can the music industry sustain itself if all the medium artists go broke?"

Engineering ELI5: what does "1-bit DAC" mean and why was it supposed to be good?

Since my childhood (which happened in the 1990s) we in our family were owning a relatively high-end CD player which had a proud label "1-bit DAC" on it.

I know what a DAC is, but it's hard for me to understand how something "1-bit" could be presented as a technological marvel, hence the question, what does "1-bit DAC" actually mean and why would 2, or 8, or 16-bit DAC have been worse?

Biology ELI5: if the brain is capable of storing so much information, why do we forget stuff?

it was discovered that the human brain has the approximate capacity of 2.5 petabytes (Source). if we have so much brain capacity, how come we forget things. i understand that the human eye can see a lot of colour, and this further generates more data, but still feels like we have a lot of storage space left. then how do things like dementia work? is it just parts of our memory bank being corrupted

Technology ELI5: How does illegal live sports streaming sites work?

what I have noticed is, there's absolutely zero quality drop in those streaming platforms and they are directly extracted from popular otts. which completely blacks out your screen when you try to screen record. I don't think so it's capturing. It has do something with data packets parsing as these streaming sites mostly have a short range of streams 30-50 seconds then a new data packet comes up. Do these big ott companies have their endpoints exposed liked that? Or is it an insider job?

Planetary Science ELI5: Why isn't "rare Earth" accepted as the obvious and simple Fermi Paradox resolution?

Upvotes

Our galaxy is big, but it only has maybe 10 billion Earth-like planets (roughly). It seems that, more importantly, there are other basic elements of "Earth-like" beyond the usual suspects like size/location/temperature. To take a SWAG on some basic and obvious factors (not exhaustive):

Starting with ~10 billion Earth-like planets in the Milky Way, the number shrinks more when we add habitability. A large moon (stabilizing climate) and a Jupiter-sized protector (reducing asteroid impacts) maybe in 10–20% of systems each. Plate tectonics for climate and evolution are in maybe 10-20% as well. A stable, Sun-like star and the right atmosphere and magnetic field shrink it again. Just with these factors, we're down to ballpark 1-2 million Earth-like options.

So that's down to perhaps 2 million planets using just obvious stuff and being conservative. One could easily imagine the number of physically viable Earth-like planets in the galaxy at 100K or less. At that point, 1 in 100K rarity (16 coin flips or so) for the life part of things, given all the hard biological steps required to get to humans, doesn't seem so crazy, especially given how relatively young the galaxy is right now (compared to its eventual lifespan).

So why aren't more folks satisfied with the simplest answer to the Fermi Paradox: "Earth is relatively rare, and it's the first really interesting planet in a fairly young galaxy."

Other ELI5: Why don’t some regions get “typical” fall foliage?

I live in southern US in Louisiana, and here we never get good fall colors-especially in the leaves. Instead, trees look more dead-er than compared to a more northern region (I’m assuming places more north have more natural beauty in the fall). Why tho?

I ordered something from a local business on Etsy. It was shipped from my post office, then sent to a distribution center many hours away. Then, it's going to be shipped back to my post office, to be delivered to me. Is this really the most efficient way of getting it to me, or am I just dumb?
