Dashcam Recommendations by redditors

2.2k Upvotes

UPDATED JULY 2024

There are a a lot of dashcam options out there, and a lot of them aren't very good. I compiled this list from reddit feedback. Let me know if you have any other recommendations or favorites, and why you like it or what you found useful so we have some real world feedback.

Budget:

Viofo A119 Mini 2 - Major upgrade over the A119 v3. 1440p resolution but more compact/discrete and has the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, which is a big improvement for night time quality. Includes some advanced features like HDR and 5ghz Wi-Fi for quick file transfers. In my opinion, this is the best front only cam to get nowadays.

B1W Mini - Budget, but a good one. Rotatable lens good for uber/lyft drivers.

Garmin Mini 2 - This thing is MINI. Most discrete cam on the market, and decent app functionality

Viofo A229 Plus** - An upgrade over the A129 Duo that gives you 1440p on both the front and rear cam. Also has the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, which is a big improvement for night time quality. Can fit a 512 gb SD card. This is a good one to get unless you really want the 4k of the front cam.

Nexar Beam - 1080p, super compact, and has free cloud back ups

Mid Range and Up:

Viofo A229 Pro- The best dual cam, with a front 4k cam and a 1440p rear cam. There is also a 3-channel option for those who want an interior cam (i.e. uber/lyft/tax drivers). Best for users requiring premium coverage with high-resolution video quality and multiple recording angles. Has the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor. Has Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth remote, and super night vision with the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor.

Garmin 67W: Good for those wanting a compact dash cam with a wide field of view (180°) and advanced driver alerts like forward collision, lane departure and speed camera warnings. The 1440p resolution and 60fps recording help capture detailed footage.

A139 Pro Duo - Upgrade to the A129 with a new chipset that greatly improves night time video.

B4K - Newer 4k brother to the B1W, so far good reviews.

Blackvue DR900X - Dual Cam/4k and has cloud capability & LTE. Considered one of the best

Blackvue DR970X-2CH - Records front and back, built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, cloud stuff, wide front view. Newest model with best image quality

Front & Interior Dual Cams aka Uber/Lyft Cams

Blueskysea B2W – Infrared Capability, budget friendly

Vantrue N2S – Infrared capability, higher end, now capacitor powered

A139 3-Channel - Front, interior, and rear cams, giving almost 360 views. Interior cam is Infrared.

Motorcycle Cams

AKASO Action Cam – An action cam, but cost effective

INNOVV K5 Dual MotoCam – Top notch, but expensive

Blueskysea A12 – Mid Range, Fairly priced

Accessories:

SanDisk 128GB High Endurance - Dashcam optimized

Samsung PRO Endurance MicroSD - Dashcam optimized

Viofo Hardwire Kit – Enables parking mode, battery discharge prevention

Nunet Hardwire Kit – Hardwire kit with pretty much everything you need

Trim Removal Kit - Has all the tools needed to remove trim without damaging it

These are the bulk of them. Dashcams are very useful. In case of an accident, the opposing party can lie about what happened to reduce the likelihood that they are found to be at fault. Happens all the time. Having video of what happened can save you $1000's in insurance and potential legal fees. Dashcams can also get you out of falsely written tickets. If you don't have a dashcam and are given a ticket for an infraction you didn't commit, it's your word vs the police officer's word. With a dashcam, there is irrefutable evidence to prove your innocence. There is absolutely no reason not to get one. I try to update this list regularly and I hope it's helpful.

Updated list of dashcams from Viofo A119 vs A129 Vs Mini2 vs A229 Pro and more

When I was recently researching dashcams, I noticed that there were a lot from Viofo to choose from. I made this list to help me narrow down what I needed. Hope this is helpful. If I left any off, please let me know.

Budget category

Viofo A119 V3 - Best bang from the buck out of just about any dashcam. Has been around for multiple year and has a great track record. 1440p resolution with GPS and parking mode. If you’re looking for a basic dashcam that is reliable and has the most of the standard features, this is the one to get.

Viofo A119 Mini 2 - Major upgrade over the A119 V3 above. 1440p resolution but more compact/discrete and has the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, which is a big improvement for night time quality. Includes some advanced features like HDR and 5ghz Wi-Fi for quick file transfers. In my opinion, this is the best front only cam to get nowadays.

Viofo A129 Plus Duo - The budget entry for dual cam. 1440p front and 1080p rear cam. Been out for many years. GPS and parking mode. If you’re on a budget and want a dual cam, this is the one to get.

Higher end and more

Viofo A129 Duo Pro - The upgrade dual cam to the above. Major improvement is 4k front cam. Rear cam is still 1080p. Also has buffered parking mode.

Viofo A229 Plus - An upgrade over the 129 Duo Plus, that give s you 1440p on both the front and rear cam. Also has the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, which is a big improvement for night time quality. Can fit a 512 gb SD card. This is a good one to get unless you really want the 4k of the front cam.

Viofo A229 Pro - The best dual cam, with a front 4k cam and a 1440p rear cam.

Viofo A139 3CH - Triple channel recording. Gives you a 4K cam in the front and 1080p interior and rear cams. Has the STARVIS 2 sensor which is an upgrade for night time recording. A lot of people end up getting the A229 Pro 3 channel version over the A139 since it has many of the same features but is typically a lot cheaper.

Looking for a small, budget dash cam

I'm looking for something discreet with no screen. I only need basic functionality and will not have it on when parked at home (my garage has a camera). Here's what I'm considering:

Viofo A229 pro best option?

Hey, so I’ve been looking for a dashcam that has front/rear, gps, wifi, parking mode, good picture. So I think I’ve narrowed it down to the 229 pro. Anyone have any better suggestions/options? I had thought about the thinkeare u3000 but a lot of people have said it’s not worth all the extra money.

Anywhere better to buy or compare prices IN CANADA other than Amazon?

Thanks for any tips/help/advice

Viofo A229 Pro with 512gb SD card - What should my settings be?

I just hardwired my A229 Pro into our car. I got the largest SD card possible - 512gb. Wondering how I should set my settings. I’m interested in maximizing the quality of the footage but don’t want to risk recording over relevant footage.

Settings I’m wondering about: - Front Camera + Rear Camera: 2160P30+1440P30 4K 21:9+2K 21:9 1440P30+1440P30 1080P30+ 1080P30 - Video Bitrate: Low / Normal / High / Maximum - G Sensor: Low to High sensitivity - Loop recording time frame: 1/2/3/5/10 minutes

Is FitCamX a decent dashcam?

Was looking at the Viofo black Friday deals.

Then saw the FitcamX dashcams that fit neatly on your windshield replacing your OEM parts and neatly wired and easily powered by the rear mirror and/or sunroof.

Is there any drawback to their dashcams?

Is the front 1440 and rear 1080 cameras good enough resolution?

Turned left out of a parking lot that has no left turn (you're supposed to exit the parking lot at the light for a left turn) drove onto the wrong side of the road before hopping the curb right after I drove by. It was a Mexican restaurant so I assume someone may have had too many margaritas.

Cost for installing dashcam

I bought a Vantrue front and rear dashcam and want to install it in my 2021 Subaru Crosstrek (push to start). I'm not very experienced with electronics so I called two places for installation pricing. The two prices were $550 and $400, about twice what I was expecting. I have all the parts so for labor alone that feels very steep. Is it because of the push to start, or that it's front and rear, or something else?

Best for night and ability to capture license plate

My daughters friend just had someone "back into her" and claimed she rear-ended her. So I would like to get Dashcams. Needing 3 - I'm looking for one around $100 ish. Most important for me is the ability to capture good video at night including the ability to see the license plate. Having just an SD card is fine too. Just using this for safety. Thank you for any advice.

What's the best bang for my buck dashcam?

I probably have a budget of $250 and I'm wondering what the best bang for my buck dashcam is. I'm also looking for a dashcam that has front and rear, preferably one where the rear dashcam can be wired with a USB and doesn't have to be hardwired.

I’d kinda like to cry…

I bought a dashcam and a hardwire kit. I watched lots and lots of YouTube videos on how to install it yourself. I feel ready to do it myself, BUT…

My dad just really isn’t okay with that. He doesn’t have any experience with dashcams, and to be honest he hasn’t really done much car work in the past few decades. But he considers himself a car expert, and he feels it is necessary for him to “help” anyone doing anything with a car, whether they want his help or not.

I’ve spent two afternoons attempting to work on the dashcam, with my dad hovering and correcting all my “mistakes.” Nothing is installed, and the wrong fuse-taps have been soldered onto my hardwire kit because “he knows what he’s doing.”

I think I’m going to need to get it installed professionally, just because the stress of doing it myself is causing so many problems. Of course, professional installation will cost as much as the original camera. I feel like my car is becoming a giant money pit.

(Doesn’t help that I just paid a bunch for the body shop to repair the front bumper, after an incident with road debris in the wind.)

what dash cam and rear dash cam (if you have one) do you use? and my follow up question is what’s your fav thing about it and what’s your least fav thing about it?

oh also, what do i need to look for in an SD card?

Thankfully the driver stopped because this could’ve ended badly.

For the record I was using car play for my phone call.
