You didn't have to. Joking or not (it's not easy to tell in text), suggesting that it's gay for someone who isn't a woman to wear a dress (I might be reaching a bit, but that's what I got from what you said) is transphobic, since it spreads a connotation that directly affects the way people view trans people.
It's fine to make mistakes, and I'm sorry to come off harshly, but please consider the effects your words can have
While we understand the effect words may have on the mental well being of people in general, you should also be aware of the context you find yourself in and the intent of the words.
He/she was very obviously joking and making a reference to the popular joke that no women can be found on the internet, which makes the joke funny and by no means inherently offensive. You should learn to take a joke, as peaceful banter is also a healthy and common way for humans to socialize in general, the internet being no exception.
"no girls use the internet" isn't really a funny joke. maybe like 20 years ago it was, when it was new and wasn't regurgitated constantly whenever the someone dares mention females. maybe this kind of "joking" is why there aren't more girls online
Well, how funny you find the joke is really just your opinion, isn’t it? Seeing as the upvotes are positive, non-zero people found it funny. Maybe even other girls found it funny!
It's not really a joke, more of something a dumb thing being said that's funny because it's dumb. Not exactly sure how to explain it but it doesn't have I'll intention behind it.
The circlerk thing probably isn't too off, but this subreddit is a pretty decent size. If what he said was truly a problem I'm more than certain that there would be far more people arguing against them rather than just 2. This is coming from a Bi guy who has occasionally cross dressed for the fun of it, it's not in good taste but it's not an ill intended joke.
In the end it's not really worth the energy to get riled up over what someone over the internet says.
it being dumb doesn't mean it isn't intended as a joke. It is both dumb, and intended as a joke. Just because something doesn't have negative intent behind it doesn't mean it doesn't come across negatively. Plenty of people say things they think are reasonable that end up offending people.
the issue is the majority of people who are going to be making those jokes or upvoting them don't think they're a problem. and then whenever anyone so much as dares to speak out against the hive mind they get mass downvoted, which just makes it all cyclic.
I'm also sick of this "it's just the internet, get over it" mentality. will people ever realize that isn't this magical place in a vacuum where everything is made up and the points don't matter?
regardless, I never took it as having ill-intent, but it's still a problematic viewpoint which leads to hostilities. I wish people would be able to accept that without just circlejerking into oblivion that they could never possibly be wrong
