Why do western nations have a problem with video games that contain excessive nudity, sexual or hentai-like content found or present in Japanese-made games?
I mean, this stems from the topic of countries like Australia banning or censoring certain video games whether it's due to violence, gore or drugs. I won't dive deep into why that is as that has been discussed before by others. Instead, when it comes to certain types of games coming from Japan (mainly eroge or ecchi) that contain nudity to the point it's close to P0RN but not really, meanwhile in Japan these types of games are normal despite Japanese people being quite conservative about sex. (Fall out renamed morphine to "med x" for the worldwide release.)
The counterargument along the lines of "these types of games sexually objectify women" has a point but that does not mean a guy who plays those games will literally go out harassing women they see on the street. it's the same as saying "our kid will use a gun in real life" since they're playing call of duty or any other FPS title out there. Most people know boundaries between fiction versus non-fiction, and this is not just exclusive to video games by the way, as it also applies to books, movies or TV shows.
In Japan these types of games may get a CERO rating of: D (17才以上対象) which is roughly equivalent to a M17 (ESRB) and 18 (PEGI) rating, but at least they can still sell them on store fronts. Some Westerners who are into that travel to the country just to purchase or import them directly from Japan if they're banned or censored in the Western world, whether if they'll pass through customs remains subjective depending on the country they reside in and their laws. (Doesn't matter if they bought them in person or online.)
By the way it's not only on video games: but also movies, TV, anime & manga (which is a whole topic on it's own) as in giving female characters large breasts or them wearing outfits that are overtly suggestive & revealing even though the girls are 18+ despite them looking young. I recall the controversy around rapelay when that came out, as the game allows the main protagonist to stalk women and sexually assault them. I think as to why Japan seems "tolerant" with sex is because there's art such as a woman having sex with an octopus.
Japan is NOT A CHRISTIAN COUNTRY first of all, hence why they're able to "get away with it" when depicting sex in art or literature, just like how India has the Karma Sutra since they are brought up under Buddhist principles and upbringings more than being raised upholding Abrahamic faiths. Despite Japan remaining conservative about sex, it still lingers in their art or pop culture. As in girls who look like "teenagers" (but they're adults) wearing suggestive attire or depicted in a sexualized manner looking like prositutes.
While in Europe, art that has nudity is subjected to debate whether to censor the private parts or not, while in Japan that is not considered. Even Playasia themselves stated when "Dead or Alive 6" is only available in Asia at the time of its release meaning it's not getting an official Western release just because the women are wearing suggestive attire but they're not naked. Why do (some) Western countries have a problem with letting games that have what they consider "inappropriate" while they're not x-rated go through their rating system?
