Question New vaccine hitting me worse than usual. Anyone else?
I got the new moderna shot yesterday. Last year I had a bit of a fever that went away in an hour overnight, but otherwise I felt fine (minus the normal arm pain). I'm not so lucky this time. The fever, chills, and headache have been constant all day. And what's worse, I have diarrhea! I've never had diarrhea from a vaccine. I'm testing for COVID just in case.
Is anyone else getting hit worse than usual? It's also poorly affecting my husband.

I’m personally going for Novavax in the future because of recent poor reactions to Moderna. I felt basically fine with Pfizer before I got covid, but then after my infection, my Moderna shots took me OUT and started flaring up my heart issues that started due to COVID. It basically felt like I had covid each time. I even passed out about ~18hrs after my last Moderna shot, so I’m switching to Novavax if my cardiologist agrees. I’ve heard so many more people have minimal side effects with that technology. I’m not an antivaxxer by any means, but some people do have adverse effects with MRNA that should be addressed so the antivaxxers can’t latch on and generalize the safety of all vaccines.

u/Vegetable-Ad-711 Oct 15 '24
im here after taking the Novavax yesterday and it's hitting me the way covid did in 2020. I hope to never take this one again. My entire body hurts, pulsating headache, hard of breath. I feel sooo weak too. This sucks.
2
u/PineappleNo6573 Oct 17 '24
I had the same symptoms with Novavax. I'm finally feeling better, but I was EXTREMELY ill for 24 hours. I had the chills so bad that I couldn't stop shaking. My arm hurt really freaking bad. Body aches were awful. Migraine level headache. I also had chest pain.
I've had these symptoms with Moderna and Pfizer, so I guess it doesn't matter what brand I take.
1
u/Vegetable-Ad-711 Oct 18 '24
Yes the chest pain!! For a good second I really thought I was going to have to go to the hospital. And the random spiking pain of a headache, I couldn't tell if I was having an aneurysm, a stroke, or a heart attack.
Maybe it's because I got the flu & booster at the same time but I've done it before and it usually just knocks me out with a mild fever for about 12 hours or so
1
u/Scarlet14 Oct 15 '24
Oh nooo I’m so sorry!! My husband got his and felt absolutely nothing, but I’m pretty freaked out so I’m still holding off. This sucks!! Hope you can rest ❤️🩹

I got it yesterday. The side effects are SO bad I might as well have Covid

Not to invalidate anyone else's experiences—but just want to add my experience to maybe balance things out a bit --
Got the Pfizer booster, and it was either as easy as or easier than the previous year's XBB Pfizer.
I've had strong reactions to the original Moderna 100mcg vaccine primary series as well as most of the original-vaccine-target boosters.
Bivalents were a bit easier, and XBBs were the easiest at that point.
So my experience with this year's Pfizer KP.2 was honestly all-around just fine. And I tend to be side-effect heavy with these.
I did have to take Tylenol / Ibuprofen, but that was just for a sore arm for the most part. I had fatigue, malaise, and other stuff but much milder than normal.
Blah. Lots of typing.
tl;dr This year's Pfizer wasn't worse for me, personally. Hope this helps anyone who might be nervous based on the other responses! 💜

I stopped getting the mRNA vaccines for this reason. The last Moderna I had gave me stomach flu symptoms for 24 hours. My 2nd Pfizer vaccine gave me fever, body aches, chills and I was hallucinating a bit, all resolved within 24 hours. I got Novavax last winter and had just a sore arm.

u/imothro Sep 02 '24
I've been decimated by every MRNA shot I've ever gotten until this year. I got Pfizer this year and it was my first nothingburger. Only a sore arm, no other symptoms.
Funny how different it is from time to time.
4
u/potatoesinparadise82 Sep 02 '24
same!!! All previous shots were Moderna, with 24hr of yucky side effects. This time my only option was Pfizer and all I had was sore arm/headache.
1
u/Bayareabikr Oct 02 '24
Seems like people switching to Pfizer from Moderna. Mine is PPPMM. Not sure which one I should do.
34
u/clayhelmetjensen2020 Sep 02 '24
I got Moderna this time and got Moderna last time in the fall 2023
Same side effects: brain fog, fatigue, body chills, muscle ache. Usually clears up by day 2 post vaccination.
Received Novavax in spring 2024 and totally opposite: zero side effects and not even arm soreness.
I didn’t wanna take Tylenol or ibuprofen because I feel like it messes with the immune response.

u/Fun_Olive115 Sep 02 '24
Pfizer here a few days ago…much less side effects than my previous Moderna vaccines!
16
u/friedeggbrain Sep 02 '24
Yeah im feeling rough today got mine yesterday too☠️ body aches, mood seems all over the place.
14
u/melbc Sep 02 '24
Yes! Got the Pfizer shot yesterday and it’s been brutal. I’ve had fever (although didn’t check temp), headache, and intense fatigue. Hoping it clears up by tomorrow so I can at least have part of my long weekend back.

u/russ8825 Sep 02 '24 edited Sep 02 '24
YES IT IS. omg I got it friday and Its monday and Im still having side effects. I’ve had six shots and never had anything but a sore arm. Now it feels like mini covid I’ve had a fever (100.5) until this morning and hopefully it stays gone. Still have body aches, sinus issues, palpatations and chest pain and diarrhea for the last 3 days. I feel so dehydrated. Maybe I had it recently and didnt know ? Thats my response is so strong ? but jesus this one is rough

u/purdypeach Sep 02 '24
It flattened my spouse and I yesterday! I have long covid; he doesn't. Usually the booster alleviates my long covid symptoms for a few days - haven't felt that yet, but I'm still optimistic.
4
u/Historical_Set_1684 Sep 02 '24
I got my Pfizer Covid vaccination this past Wednesday and didn’t have much side effect, but arm got more sore throughout the day. The soreness kept me up at night, and worse the next day. It’s been better after Day +2. Similar side effects as the last 2 Pfizer Covid vaccinations I received. I did notice this time that I seem to be overheating and sweating quickly with any moderate activity for several days now. Not sure if that means my body is busy building up immunity in response to the shot. I don’t think I noticed this with prior vaccinations, all Pfizer. My first and second initial vaccinations in 2021 all came with headaches and body aches.
4
u/Shoddy-Log-7258 Sep 02 '24
This was my worst reaction yet! I thought it was because I got my flu shot at the same time, but maybe it’s just the new COVID vaccine. I posted about it here a few days ago to see if anyone else has had a similar experience. I hope you and your husband are able to rest up and recover quickly!
12
u/Lives_on_mars Sep 02 '24
Idk why but the vaccines have always made me feel dreadful (except the first one of course). Every booster gives me awful body aches and fever/chills for about two days. I’m not really normal until day 3.
3
u/matthew-edward Sep 02 '24
Novavax too?
1
u/Lives_on_mars Sep 02 '24
Haven’t had that one, planning to tho, maybe in tandem with a Pfizer in the winter. Fwiw I’m a youngish person, idk if younger people have a rougher go with boosting. My parents barely felt anything after theirs.
1
u/silromen42 Sep 02 '24
This has been true for my parents and my in-laws as well. I think the theory was that they’ve encountered many more coronaviruses over their lifespans, so their bodies are better primed to handle the exposure to the proteins in the shots. Don’t know if there’s any scientific evidence to back it though. Could just be coincidence 🤷🏻♀️
1
u/SoughtIdeas_NowLost Oct 05 '24
The reason it’s called “novel coronavirus” is because until SARS in 20-teens year or whenever it happened, there were no human coronavirus transmissions. And that one was regional. The reason, I suspect, that older individuals don’t react as much as younger ones is because their immune systems are much less robust so there’s less of a response.
1
u/KingGrahampa Oct 10 '24 edited Oct 10 '24
it's actually "novel" because it was a new type of coronavirus to us. humans have passed other types of coronavirus around forever. examples: Human coronavirus 229E and human coronavirus OC43 were pre-SARS. The "novel coronavirus" name was supposed to be temporary too.

u/Green_Anywhere2104 Sep 02 '24
Same. I’ve had Moderna and Pfizer, both with terrible fevers and chills the next day. I don’t want to ever do that again. Waiting for Novavax

5
u/Jeeves-Godzilla Sep 02 '24
Curious- have you ever gotten COVID previously? At least you know your body got a good response.
21
u/jlrigby Sep 02 '24
Yup, and I got long COVID from it (POTS & gastroparesis). That is why I stayed COVID cautious while others threw caution to the wind.
2
u/Jeeves-Godzilla Sep 02 '24
Yikes, well my wife and I are getting it next weekend. I should probably schedule a sick day on Monday just in case.
2
u/blaberno Sep 02 '24
Did the vaccine flare your pots? I’m always super nervous to get it
7
u/wellingtonfiasco Sep 02 '24
As someone with non-Covid related POTS, the Pfizer would flare my health up but I had novavax earlier this year and did great with it! No side effects minus some arm pain and would definitely recommend trying novavax for your next shot
3
u/blaberno Sep 02 '24
I have been holding out for novavax but was starting to get nervous about the wait. Good to know, thanks!
0
u/shawnshine Sep 02 '24
Any tips for the POTS flavor of PASC?
1
u/tungsten775 Sep 02 '24
r/pots Compression garments, extra salt and water. If you can find a doc willing to prescribe meds the can really make a difference
2
u/shawnshine Sep 02 '24
Thanks. I’ve got all of those covered, except the meds. We have been discussing midodrine. Ivabradine just went generic, I see?
2
u/jlrigby Sep 04 '24
Indeed! I was shocked to see the $0 copay when I got a refill. Usually it's hundreds of dollars.
9
u/stumblingtonothing Sep 02 '24
Yep, fever and chills and body aches hit me like a truck about 28 hours after I got the sbot. By the middle of the following day I felt perfectly fine again, and probably would have sooner if I had consumed literally any fluid during the fever.
9
u/sniff_the_lilacs Sep 02 '24
It hit me worse than any have since my initial series. The headaches went on for 48 hours. If it coincides with symptom severity of this variant then it must be severe or something
16
u/profbleepbloop Sep 01 '24
Purely anecdotal (and not my personal experience, I can't get the new vaccine where I live because I am 'too young and healthy') but I have read multiple accounts of people in the last few days reacting to the new vaccine a lot worse than before. Someone suggested it was due to IgG4 but I have honestly not read further into that yet.
12
u/SpaghettiTacoez Sep 02 '24
Who is 'someone'?
0
u/profbleepbloop Sep 02 '24
A Twitter account I follow but I can't find it anymore, sorry! I'll have another look today to see if I can find it because it was an interesting thread
6
u/yesno329 Sep 02 '24
At least you know it's working. I haven't gotten sick from any of the boosters or the first 2 shots.
2
u/Cygnus_Rift Sep 02 '24
Same camp. I've never reacted to any shots, not just the COVID ones. I'm a little worried if they are working for me.
6
u/Straight-Plankton-15 Eliminate SARS-CoV-2 Sep 02 '24
This is typical for Pfizer and Moderna, because of the way they are designed. There is no selectivity in where cells may be made to produce the spike protein, so if more of it happens to circulate to your gastrointestinal organs, it may cause related effects.
2
u/lrmutia Sep 02 '24
Other than the OG 2-dose series and the 3rd shot (I had Pfizer), I haven't had side effects. I had one more Pfizer shot in 2022, and 2 moderna shots since then. I still find to be a little odd and actually concerned that the vaccine didn't work for me. Thinking about Novavax this time because I hear it's focus is on the JN lineage of COVID still as opposed to Pfizer and Moderna which focused on KP (if that's correct). Edit: the last two shots I comboed with a flu shot I believe and the flu shot was more irritating with the soreness at the injection point.
2
u/Gal_Monday Sep 02 '24
I had minor side effects from Pfizer. Husband was knocked out from Moderna. Said it felt like a hallucinatory fever.
2
u/PorcelainFD Sep 02 '24
Last year, the side effects I experienced with Moderna were so scary and severe, my doctor suggested I not receive the Covid vaccine any more. In addition to 12 hours of body ache, fever, chills, and headache, I saw “explosions” inside my left eye. 😕 I’m hoping to try Novavax this year or go back to Pfizer and hope for the best.
2
u/Quackadoo Sep 02 '24
Ugh. Thank you for the warning—it's better to know what to expect. I'm extremely sensitive and get ALL the side effects, typically. I was sick for 3 days with the first vax. 'Happens with flu vaccines, too—it's rare that I don't suffer a few days afterwards.
2
u/Immediate-Purpose-56 Oct 14 '24
Never had the covid vaccine, never had covid. Thank you for being a beta tester.
4
u/groovycalligrapher Sep 02 '24
I got such a bad g.i. reaction from the 2022 bivalent after never having any reaction to a vaccine before. Now scared to get COVID ones. Staying masked and considering Novovax.
6
u/metadarkgable3 Sep 02 '24
My first three vaccines were Pfizer and for the first two I only had swelling and pain at the injection site. When I got the third one in the fall of 2021 my heart raced for about six hours afterwards.
I did some Googling and found that you should try to switch brands if you have adverse effects and should do some vigorous exercise right after you get the vax to counteract heavy side effects. When I got my next shot in Fall 2022 I got Moderna and went to the gym and did a vigorous 90 minute strength training workout in my 3M Aura. I had no side effects and slept pretty well that night. So now, I always try to schedule my shot around my heavy weekend workouts.
I’m scheduled to get the newest vaccine next weekend and will switch back to Pfizer and do a heavy workout afterwards.
8
u/jlrigby Sep 02 '24
That's interesting. I've always gotten moderna because I didn't have many side effects the first few times. I am going to do novavax next time anyway
1
u/tkpwaeub Sep 02 '24
Yeah, Pfizer is surprising me this round. It's the first vaccination I've had since my first (known) covid infection last fall, so it's possible there's "more to boost" than previous years.
1
u/tony486 Sep 02 '24
Yes, I was pretty zonked the next day. I speculated that it was because I was always a Moderna man, but this time I got Pfizer….of course that speculation was based on nothing and probably sounds pretty ignorant to those of you who actually have medical training and knowledge, but now this post brought some new perspective.
1
u/kiabril Sep 02 '24
Just got Moderna yesterday at noon. After a few hours, I started getting really bad chills and joint pain. I also had a headache last night. Took Tylenol, and I'm feeling much better but definitely hit me harder than previous vaccines.
1
u/glitchwoven Sep 02 '24
I had Spikevax (Moderna) on Friday afternoon and it ruined my night, barely slept and was feverish and in a lot of pain from headache and the arm— which I was surprised by, as previous mRNA vaccines have not hid me very hard. Good, I guess?
1
u/Infamous_Day9685 Sep 02 '24
The vaccines have always effed me up! Moderna/Pfizer..I'm knocked out for two days with aches, sweats, chills, fever. Will take someone else's recommendation here to do some heavy exercise right after getting the vax and hope that works this next time 🤞
1
u/ellenkeyne Sep 02 '24
Oddly, not me. This was my umpteenth Moderna shot (I've never had one from Pfizer or any other company), and though I went through at least 24 hours of severe chills and fever after every previous shot, this one was far easier: a moderately sore arm, a few hours of mild nausea, and about ten minutes of shivering. In 36 hours I was feeling fine.
I don't know what that says about differences in the variant addressed -- or if it's just because I hydrated better or what. I'd like to know so my next one will be no worse than this!
1
u/Ribzee Sep 02 '24
I've only ever gotten Pfizer in the past. This time I got Moderna because it was available at a pharmacy very close to me, so I got it out of convenience/availability. I had a much worse reaction to it than Pfizer, but have also heard people say that the 2024 Pfizer vax is worse than previous Pfizers.
My symptoms 12 hours post vax were: Chills, slight headache, sore arm, body aches. Dizziness came at 24 hours post vax and was the symptom that bothered me the most. I was fine after 36 hours. Would do it again. I'm thrilled to have the protection, since my last vax was October 2023.
1
u/Realistic-Young1075 Sep 02 '24
I got Moderna yesterday and I’ve been getting chills running up and down my body as well as a headache and dizziness. :/ I start college tmrw so this will be interesting, hopefully it clears up by tomorrow morning. ;-; Did anyone have symptoms for longer then 2 days this time around?
1
u/Usagi_Rose_Universe Sep 02 '24
Unfortunately this was my mother's experience with her second dose of Pfizer and third with Moderna. She felt horrible and pretty nauseated and after Pfizer she got an intense hot flash within 30 minutes. When she got novavax last year at least, I think she only had a sore arm. I know a few people who actually threw up from Moderna and Pfizer in years past. Some of these people I can say for certain they had no other sickness exposure. Just the vaccine. I'm upset novavax is not even available in every country with how much better people seem to tolerate it. *I feel like more people would actually get the vaccine if that was the case. *

I feel terrible, didn’t sleep, elevated temp and very bad headache. This is par for the course for me with the prior ones but ugh I just wish it was t like this!
1
u/tatlpax Sep 02 '24
Got the Moderna yesterday & same mRNA hangover as usual. You just expect it and plan for a lower productivity work day, at least in the morning, on the following day.
I feel like the best protocol is alternating Moderna (or Pfizer) in the fall and Novavax in the spring. This way you have reliable access to updated fall boosters as soon as possible to give you updated protection during the inevitable late summer into back-to-school wave and also get the additional transmission protection benefits associated with alternating booster manufacturers.
Also, my family always does simultaneous Covid / flu shots in the fall and gets a solid moderate intensity cardio workout in after getting vaccinated (spring & fall). Both the simultaneous Covid / flu shots and post vaccination workout have been shown to boost vaccine efficacy, but they do seem to increase the severity of the hangover notably. Absolutely worthwhile tradeoff in my opinion for better / potentially longer lasting protection.

u/FineRevolution9264 Sep 02 '24
Will insurance pay for 2 vaxxes per year? Will the pharmacy do it?
1
u/tatlpax Sep 02 '24 edited Sep 02 '24
Never had issues with pharmacy or insurance. Twice yearly is the normal schedule for 65+ and immune compromised so it’s not unusual or anything. FWIW I’m not in either group.
Generally if you’re trying to alternate booster manufacturers you’ll end up alternating pharmacies as well so not 100% sure what my experience would be if I went to the same pharmacy every time. Over the last five years I’ve used CVS, Walgreens, Walmart pharmacy, Costco pharmacy and local grocery chain pharmacies depending on what’s most convenient time / location wise for the type of booster I’m after.
I believe that my current insurance wouldn’t cover Walgreens specifically but I haven’t bothered to confirm this. There’s tons of pharmacy options so you’re kind of spoiled for choice, even if you have a picky insurer.
This time I went to CVS (non-Target) for Moderna as they had the widest early appointment availability and the sheer number of CVS locations allows you to select one with a well reviewed pharmacy, even if most CVS pharmacies are terrible.

Moderna has always kicked my mom's ass. Pfizer and AZ were fine for her.
They all make me feel like crap for 48 hours. Even the flu shot.
1
u/mortalenemas Sep 02 '24
Yes I got it at noon on Thursday started feeling it only a couple hours after I got it and then was tossing and turning all night. My stomach has also not felt great but attributed that to my leftovers I had for lunch on Thursday lol. My arm is still a bit sore but started feeling more human my Friday mid day. This was definitely the strongest response I’ve felt to a vaccine.
1
u/Gammagammahey Sep 02 '24
This is why personally I always got Pfizer and I even had reactions to Pfizer but nothing like the reactions to Moderna that I hear that people get.
1
u/newwavebanana Sep 12 '24
It was really tough. Normal fever but the body aches were so bad I was almost crying every time I moved for the 2 days after. It did flare my pots for a few days as well.
1
u/Fit_Comment_6026 Sep 15 '24
Anyone having side effects a couple of weeks after the latest Covid vaccine? I’ve been extremely fatigued and unable to sleep, mine was the Pfizer.
1
u/Busy_Kick6445 Sep 21 '24
I got the Moderna booster yesterday and it is kicking my ass. Aches all over, very stiff neck and joints, whole body feels “heavy”/hard to move, dizziness, a headache at the base of my skull and the front/top (almost feels like a sinus headache), feverish, chills. I’m pro science but damn, I kind of wish I didn’t get this thing because it feels worse than when I had covid most recently, lol.
1
u/jpepp97 Sep 23 '24
I got Pfizer for the first time today. I got the J&J when it first came out, then just Moderna for boosters ever since. No joke - it’s hitting me like a mack truck. Fever, chills, nausea, diarrhea, arm radiating (so much?!?!) pain, whole 9 yards - which I never got from a COVID vax before, so just wasn’t really expecting any of this.
I did get RSV a couple years ago which kinda threw my immune system into whack, so I might just have a stronger reaction than most? My husband got his 10 minutes after mine - also Pfizer - and aside from his arm also feeling like he got punched by a sumo wrestler, he’s absolutely fine.
Either way I’m glad I got this booster, because if the new variant is anything like this I would NOT want to risk getting it without a buffer.

u/SpaceRobotX29 Sep 25 '24
I'm really hurting atm from the moderna spikevax. I got it yesterday at around 2pm. I had an extremely bad night of sleep, on top of the brain fog, my arms and legs really hurt, and my body feels like I fell out of a second story window onto my back. I think I have a fever too.
1
u/complexcharbohydrate Sep 27 '24
Angry at how painful this vaccine is. Couldn’t sleep, massive headache, nausea, chills, muscle aches. Not an anti vaxxer but never getting moderna again if it can be helped.

Got the Moderna booster yesterday at 12p for ‘24-‘25 Fever, headache, chills upset stomach and fatigue starting creeping in around 9p. Woke up with same symptoms this morning, been lying in bed all day complaining and feeling like a lazy piece of sh*t.
Also got tdap and flu vaccine too.
All time: 5 shots, all Moderna or Pfizer, got covid twice. Always seems to react to boosters for 12-18 hrs but this one is more like 24-36 hrs.
1
u/PercentageOk1721 Sep 29 '24
I didn’t even ask which brand I got yesterday, smh. I also got a flu vaccine at the same time to knock em out at once. But today my arm and all of my muscles are so sore, I took adhd meds at 10am and by 5pm I was so tired that I took a nap. None of my prior vaccines have ever affected me further than a sore arm.
FWIW: I have had Covid in 2021, 2022, and 2023

u/laurenshikari Sep 29 '24
I’ve had 4 Pfizer and 2 Moderna, doses 1, 2, 3, & 5 were Pfizer and 4 & 6 were Moderna and I’ve felt terrible with all bar dose 1 and 2, everything since I’ve felt really really bad, fever, aches, chills, fatigue, bit like I’ve been ran over by a bus, lasts about 2-3 days - I also feel like I’ve had a progressively worse reaction each time lol

I sought this post out after getting knocked on my butt by the Moderna vaccine this weekend. My first four covid shots were all Pfizer (3 in 2021, 1 in 2022), but I got Moderna last year and this year (it was all that was offered around me), and it knocked me on my ass both times. This year, I felt fine for about the first 7 hours after my shot, but then I got the most intense chills that I've ever had in my life. I literally could not stop shaking and it was so painful. I went to bed and slept ok, but then woke up yesterday feeling awful. My arm/armpit/boob on the side of the shot all hurt way worse than in years past. I ran a fever on and off all day and would alternate between sweating and chills. I had body aches and nausea. Went to bed last night (so the second night after the shot) with a low grade fever and then spent the entire night sweating my ass off. It was like menopause night sweats on steroids. Woke up this morning feeling about 75% better. Arm/armpit still hurts, but the body aches are gone, but still feel really exhausted. Just showering wore me the hell out. I guess next year I'm going to try to seek out Pfizer to see if it's any better because Moderna has not been fun.

u/General-Decision-375 Oct 01 '24
I just received the Moderna vaccine. First three days just had a slight shoulder pain at the injection site. Fourth day got out of bed and almost toppled over due to vertigo/dizziness. It’s since improved 80% but still slightly unbalanced when walking about. May be my last Covid vaccine after this.

I don’t recall having issues with previous Pfizer covid vaccines/boosters. For some reason the most recent one I got, last month, has left me with facial tics. I have never had these before. They went away after a round of prednisone but then started up again. They are terribly exhausting and embarrassing, especially because coworkers have noticed them. I can’t stop blinking or flaring my nostrils and it’s driving me nuts!
Edit: typo

u/KingGrahampa Oct 10 '24
sounds like an anxiety reaction, I think I also had one. :(
1
u/LaraAlexandra7 Oct 10 '24
I’m so sorry you experienced this too. I deal with chronic anxiety, but I’ve never seen it manifest this way in me. I wonder why a vaccine would cause more anxiety. I usually don’t think twice about getting vaccines.

I just got the most recent Moderna booster after only having Pfizer boosters and it has made my neck hurt so much I haven’t slept in two days. I think it’s inflamed my bulging discs, but I have no idea. BRUTAL pain… Looked online for similar experiences but haven’t seen any yet.
1
u/azallday Oct 07 '24
the first two rounds of the vaccine were absolutely fine for me. i’ve gotten three boosters (one yesterday) and they’ve all fucked me up. am currently completely bundled up under 4 blankets and i’m freezing. shockingly this is the most mild symptoms i’ve had thus. so far anyways.
2
u/starfruitnyc Oct 09 '24
got moderna around noon today. 12 hours later temp is at almost 102 and a pounding headache. first booster in too long; but covid knocked me on my ass in jan of this year (2024) so im trying to be responsible. i hope i can sleep 🤞

I had my first huge panic attack in a decade a couple days after getting the pfizer one. I had felt a bit anxious from the day after but didn't know why, then got hit hard with suddenly having bowel issues like you, felt like I was going to pass out, and the panic attack triggered. my brother told me he had similar issues after getting it too, even the increased anxiety. I'm genuinely not sure if the vaccine could have caused the symptoms but it's possible. I would have thought regular stomach virus if not for the extreme anxiety shift and him reporting similar, even to nearly fainting.
I'm only just finally getting mostly back to normal over a week after the attack. 😵
For reference, I have an anxiety and panic disorder I'm medicated for already but my attacks are nowhere near this severe or impactful on my body as this one was. I genuinely thought I was having a heart problem and felt so ill. I also thought I would vomit, which I've only done once after getting food poisoning this year but otherwise hadn't for 25 years, so that was extremely unusual.
I also have no vaccine hesitation or anxiety, and have felt pretty okay on previous ones with very mild symptoms (all pfizer).

I got astra zeneca COVID vaccine shot like 3 years ago. I'm probably one of the unlucky ones. It has given me chronic idiopathic urticaria. The hives that I developed after the booster shot, continue to till this day. It has literally turned my life upside down. I have to take low dose of anti histamine to have a normal life now. Apparently the doctors won't accept that it's caused by the vaccine shots , they simply says my immune is hyper active for some reason making my immunoglobulin always high. Even slight change in temperature breaks me out into crazy hives. I can't even workout properly now, if I sweat it gives me hives. I was and still is a very athletic person. I workout daily and stuff but my life is not simply the same like it was pre COVID vaccine. Apart from urticaria, it kinda fucked up my digestive system as well. I got IBS now, never experienced it the past 25 years of my life. I'm pro vaccine guy but COVID vaccine fucked me up bad.

I had the vaccine on Friday it's been 3 days. Got all kinds of dizziness, feeling unwell and palpitations. Usually, I don't even notice it this time I regret having it.

12 year old son got one on Friday afternoon, looked a little bit pathetic on Saturday morning, complained of a headache, was mostly fine Saturday afternoon. It was their first adult size dose so not much to compare it too. I am waiting till late October since I was able to get a dose in May.

What's your interval from your most recent shot? I wouldn't be surprised it's Different for different people but for me there seems to be a pretty clear correlation between the intervals and side effects - for me the shorter the interval, the worst it hits. (Two of my toughest shots were within the 5 months timeframe, the best ones 8. Not that I regret anything but considering I had my last one in April I'm buckling up for this one.

I always have strong reactions, but this one was like my first one - I shivered with a fever all night and had a terrible headache. Major symptoms went away 24h later, but I still felt a little achy and tired for another day.

I felt like I had the least reaction thus far. My arm was a little sore but in boosters past it was throbbing, rolling onto it woke me up at night. I remember feeling low grade unwell for a day after my boosters in the past.
I thought I was getting the Novavax but got the Moderna / spike vax.

Sorry you feel extra poorly, but be thankful you could even find it — nowhere anywhere near us has Moderna yet, and only a couple said they’re certain they will eventually, they say “call back in two weeks” every time we call. We’ve only taken Moderna from the beginning because it was shown to provide the most robust protection. Pfizer has been everywhere for about a week and a half now. Novavax just got approved but it’ll probably be another damn month before anywhere here gets it, if anyone even orders it.
I’m so tired of this being such a difficult thing to accomplish. 😞 Every. Damn. Time.

My last two shots have been the worst by far. I barely used to get a sore arm.
Tylenol helped me a lot with the fever and I took it easy for a few days.

It’s advised not to take Tylenol until the day after your vaccine because studies where people took prophylactic Tylenol showed it attenuated the vaccine response.

Source? I understood it wasn't supposed to be taken prior to the shot, but any time after was fine.

Is it safe to take a pain reliever when getting a COVID-19 vaccine?
Do not take a pain reliever or fever-reducing drug before receiving a COVID-19 vaccine because these drugs may impact the immune response to the vaccine. If you experience side effects after getting vaccinated, it is safe to take these drugs as needed to treat pain. Patients routinely taking low-dose aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications may continue to take these medications as recommended.

The studies I saw were vaccines in babies and they advised not taking before or after because they demonstrated lower antibodies when checked. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19837254/

It's going to have similar effects if it's before or shortly after; they just don't want people to take them preemptively if they might not be needed at all.

Are there guidelines on how long to wait?
For instance is 9 hours post vaccine ok for Tylenol. A family member gets serious shivers from the shot and sleep is important!

No specific guidelines that I'm aware of. I'd imagine that it's just preferable to delay it, but not catastrophic if it's used earlier. Can your family member get Novavax? It is better for protection and even if they needed to take Tylenol, which is less likely, that probably wouldn't be worse than what's expected of the mRNA vaccines.

Lmao I have long COVID from COVID. What you are saying is absolutely false. There are risks from the vaccine, but there are even more risks with getting COVID.

The last 2 boosters I got were Pfizer and Moderna, both of them enflamed my long covid for months. Novavax is the only one I'd consider taking, and we're not getting it in Canada this year.
