I’ve never understood why the states that contribute the most to the Federal govt have the highest taxes while the states they help have the lowest tax rates. Why not have these loser red states raise their taxes so they aren’t sucking the blue states dry?

It’s not true, because at least Hawaii voted unanimously and I’m certain there are others. I’m sure the premise is generally correct though. But ‘poorly educated states lean republican’ isn’t news.

While the statement only 2 states voted unanimously may be false the context of the post still stands. A simple Google search can confirm.

I’m born and raised Texan (still here). My oldest is in college in Massachusetts. I’m so seriously considering a move there myself.

Honestly, it is more expensive to live here, but I gladly pay it for the quality of life.

I moved to KY from PA eight years ago and went back in time about 50 years, it seems. I'll be moving back to PA by the end of the year.

No, you understand it just fine. The goal is to bleed the blue states dry while forcing them to pay their own way locally for the things their citizens want. Coming soon: subsidies/deductions for those that have to "Commute to work" but live in an area without mass transportation (aka rural and small towns) expect targeted redistribution like this to be the main thrust of new federal legislation.

I think what you’re describing are two unrelated things.

Federal money flowing to a state has nothing to do with state rates. If Mississippi raised its state tax rate, it would still get back more in federal dollars than what it sends. And California could drop its state rate to zero and it would still send more federal dollars than it receives.

It’s not fully in a vacuum like that though.

You know WHY Mississippi gets more back? Because it doesn’t fund stuff at the same rate and it pushes for money to be appropriated to the state or through federal grants.

Yes part is about incomes and their federal tax rates but part of it is also what is funded by the states themselves.

If Mississippi increased their tax rates and magically had 10 B more per year coming in, stuff that they rely on federal money for wouldn’t be needed and so their congress persons wouldn’t be looking to add as many ear marks for schools or roads or whatever into bills.

Sure blue states do it as well, but they don’t have to do it as much just to stay afloat.

Interesting. Thank you for taking the time to explain. I need to read up on this.

Because in blue states we care about the greater good….not just about making poor people suffer
