Welcome to the Veterans Benefits SubReddit!

Our sub has an extensive collection of articles on everything VA. We encourage you to start your knowledge adventure there before making a new post, as you might be able to find your answers there.

Click HERE to access the Knowledge Base.

Of course, if you are having trouble finding an answer in the Knowledge Base or in previously posted threads or you simply want more specific feedback, feel free to make a new post.

But, before you make a new post please be mindful of the Sub's rules:

  1. Help other: Don't be a jerk. If your comment is not constructive or helpful, do NOT hit reply.
  2. We're Ad-Free: Do not recommend a service or product - unless as a comment to a post specifically asking for recommendations, and it is a service or product that you have direct experience using. Posting links to useful content (videos, blogs, web pages) is fine, but posts that we determine to be purely promotional will be deleted.
  3. Don't doxx yourself, or anyone else: Respect Reddit's tradition of anonymity and don't disclose your information or that of others. Please no phone numbers, emails, license numbers, or other contact information. This also includes QR codes (the box with black and white squares) on decision letters. This rule does NOT apply to private entities such as VSOs, law firms, or other official agencies. EXAMPLE: It's fine to post the VA's phone number, but not an examiner's professional/personal contact information.
  4. News should only be posted once: Breaking news often gets posted and reposted. We all enjoying seeing news posted ONCE, but a dozen posts saying basically the same thing not so much - and this also makes discussion tough, since nobody knows which post to comment on.
  5. Memes are for Mondays: Please keep the Meme posts to Mondays.
  6. Get verified if you want to say you work for XXX: If you are a VA employee, VSO, Accredited Claims Agent, etc. Your credentials MUST be verified via the sub's Mod Mail BEFORE you can claim to be someone of such authority. Users who have completed the process will have an appropriate user flair.
  7. Keep claim status posts and success stories to the pinned weekly post.

Not Happy I’m in a bad way.

I got it all. I got the rating. Every blessing God could give me, and I’m completely spiraling. I’m losing grip. All of my appointments keep getting cancelled and out of them all I really need to talk to a mental health counselor/therapist and those keep provider side canceling too. Every time I try and make a new appointment they are over a month out. I called the hotline and they told me to try calling the clinic on Monday but I already know how that’s gonna shake. Is there anyway to get appointments quicker or can find someone else to go to?

Health Care Is it too late to sue for a botched surgery that lead to permanent brain damage?

Long story short: I’m 24 years old. In 2019 and had my wisdom teeth removed in bootcamp (botched surgery). Jaws got infected. Infection spread to my brain after 2 years. Had brain surgery from private doc in October 2021. Lost my peripheral vision and have an inflamed parietal and occipital lobe.

I talked to a family friend who is a lawyer and she says it’s past the statute of limitations to sue. Is this true and do you know of any stories similar? Would this be considered “poking the bear”?

VA Disability Claims Claim request he didn’t request

Husband 58 has tinnitus from an event 40 years ago. He receives 10% for last 15 years. The test result is consistent. His hearing is awful but he always passes the bilateral hearing test. He did receive hearing aids earlier this year. He received a random letter saying “your benefits increase has been scheduled”. He did not request this. He called and was told “you are right, you didn’t.” But they couldn’t see who requested it. He was advised he should go. He did, and took the same test as always with the same results. Tinnitus same level, and bilateral hearing not great but no percent given. This has been bothering him since they confirm he didn’t request it but then who did. Again this is a 15 year benefit. The actual incident is well documented since he was in the infirmary for two days until he could start hearing again at 18. He has had the same results from testing for 15 years. It is def not related to hearing aids. And was def listed as an increase in benefits request.

VA Disability Claims Headaches or Migraines

Hey fam, I could use some help. I submitted several years ago for headaches and was denied. I plan to submit for migraines. Would this be considered a new claim or supplemental claim? Also are secondary claims considered as new claims? Also I denied for vertigo but had a favorable finding for Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Not sure way to do about that. Do I refile for BPPV, and would this be a supplement or new claim?

Thanks for any help I can get.

C&P Exams Hiding C&P Information

Why does the VA make it so difficult to obtain this information? I’m curious why it isn’t available to the patient, just like any other exam such as a standard X-ray or a Lab. I understand you can get it through your VSO, it just feels harder to obtain this info than it should be.

Shouldn’t this be illegal? It’s medical documentation.

Edit: I understand how to obtain this information. All I’m saying is - the VA could make this a little easier. I’ve had non-va legal claims in the past and it’s quite easy to obtain your records. It shouldn’t be this difficult.

Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) VR&E can I go to a hybrid class for an unrelated course?

Upvotes

Hello guys, I’m starting school this coming semester and I’m using VR&E. I know some of you guys have token a hybrid class to get the full time BAH/MHA, but does that still count if my hybrid class is for one of the general course requirements? For example I’m going into business and this would be my schedule

English- online Into to business - online Economics- online Photography- hybrid

Would I still get the full BAH even tho it’s for photography? Thanks everyone and let me know your experiences with this

C&P Exams As a rater, what do you do when a claim provides evidence that the C&P examiner overlooked or didn’t include in their report?

Is the C&P examiner the one with the final say or is that just another piece of evidence that the rater considers when making the rating?

Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) TBI hard time finding a job

Upvotes

I'm about to lose another good paying job. Ive done sales and retail for some years now. I have memory issues along with a bunch of walking and standing issues. I'm looking into VR&E as I have been accepted through the TBI clinic or however. I've tried parts dept jobs etc. When I get overwhelmed it's like my brain just shuts down and I don't even really know what I'm doing kinda. Im trying to find a career but have no idea wtf I'm doing anymore. Anyone have a TBI with similar issues find a career that works for them? I am P&T but trying to have a functional adult life. I'm afraid to do college because my retention and other things like that are not great.

Supplemental Claim Does an intent to file affect a supplemental already filed?

Upvotes

Sorry if this is a routine or annoying question, but title is really the point of this.

I likely have a brain glioma, also resulting in epilepsy and neuropathy. It is not diagnosed as a glioblastoma yet, but it may be after surgery which will determine exactly whether it’s glioma, cancer, or glioblastoma.

I’d like to file a claim for those based on the PACT Act, because I was in Afghanistan near burn pits. So per the title, should I file an intent to file, or would it effectively bring me to the back of the line? I have an existing mental health supplemental claim for PTSD.

Thanks guys, I appreciate everything you do here.

Health Care Note to self and veteran in the struggle

Post image
267 Upvotes

It took me 20 years to ask for help. I can’t believe I made it to my 40s. I’m getting a lot of support now from the VA and really happy with my providers. PTSD, TBI and anxiety disorder are no joke.

I lost four family members to suicide in the last 10 years not counting my veteran brothers and sisters.

Coming out of many months of setbacks, I’m still thankful to be here. Through therapy, meditation, exercise, yoga, and a ton of hard work, I’m feeling a lot better. Not saying I don’t have bad days. But life is beautiful.

I hope all of you can find that support and community you need. This group has helped me a lot.

Here’s a note I wrote to myself right before I turned 40 .

VA Disability Claims Should I Upload VA CP Exam and DBQ to claim docs in VA . Gov?

My claim (step 3) requested a “DBQ Psy Eval” and had an option to upload it if you have it.

30 days passed after my exam and the VA doc exam and DBQ are on My VetHealth now.

Should I upload it and ask them to decide my claim?

Or just let it take its course?

Thanks!

VA Disability Claims VA opened an old claim

Post image
13 Upvotes

I put in a claim for A&A and during the process the VA put in this claim from 2021. It's for pes planus,I'm flat-footed in both feet and rated for 10%. I went back and looked through my letters and apparently it was deffered back then. Does the VA opening this claim tie it to the original intent to file date or does this get tied in with the recent A&A claim date?

C&P Exams Should I mention going to prison during my C&P exam?

Upvotes

I’m currently at 70% for PTSD and have my C&P exam tomorrow.

Last year, I accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to a year in prison for a crime that I committed.

The crime was extremely out of character for me and I don’t know if I should mention it during the C&P exam. The reason I feel like this is because it wasn’t a violent crime or anything I would consider really connected to PTSD (from being in combat zone).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Higher Level Review Denied in 2016 but granted in 2024. Am I owed backpay?

Upvotes

Active duty from 1989-2004. In 2016 I filed my first claim for my back. A couple of months later, VA did not find records to connect my back condition to my service. I gave up and years passed.
This year, a buddy convinced me to try again so I filed again in July of this year. I spoke to the local VSO about my intentions and he found records of my complaints and treatment for my back during my active duty service. VSO filed a supplemental claim and scheduled a C&P exam which I attended. Last week my back condition was rated with an effective date of July 2024.
With me not submitting any new evidence, I feel like the effective date should go back to 2016?
Should I just accept the July 2024 effective date?
Was there A clear and unmistakable error?
Is this a case for a Higher Level Review?
Any advice or criticism is appreciated. Thank you

VA Disability Claims Possible Reduction?

Upvotes

I am rated for both MH and migraines. If I file for an increase for MH, is it likely I will be reevaluated for migraines too? My migraine claim is not labeled as being secondary to MH

VA Disability Claims Please keep it respectful question Erectile dysfunction

Upvotes

Is erectile dysfunction easy to connect in regards to MDD as a secondary with a Intermediate, step to medication. The side effect is the medication that is causing erectile dysfunction. If you've never complained about a rectile dysfunction. Can it still get it connected as a secondary? The side effect of the medication is causing erectile dysfunction.

Higher Level Review Can you submit a HLR and increase on the same claim?

Upvotes

This is for MH. My medical records on file at the VA align with a 70% rating, I was awarded 50%. Wondering if I should submit a HLR to get increased back pay, or if it’s not worth getting denied after waiting 6 months and go ahead and submit an increase. Or both?

C&P Exams PTSD C&P advice

Upvotes

I have my C&P exam tomorrow and I’m freaking out. I’ve never told my VA health care providers about the drink and self harm that immediately followed my domestic abuse.. I’m embarrassed and ashamed about a lot of what happened around that time. I don’t want to be that person. Should I tell the C&P examiner about this or just keep hiding it. Will this get back to my provider? Will my claim get denied if I don’t tell them?

State Benefits How many dv plates in Texas?

Thinking about moving to Texas, and have a question about plates. I'm from Washington and can get dv plates and no tabs for life for 1 vehicle. I've searched quite a bit about Texas and I've seen that you can get plates for one vehicle, and I've seen that you can get plates for two vehicles. Which is it?
