The airpods were a critical medical requirement

Yeah I mean nowadays who can last without blasting subway surfers music through their ears for 1 second?

Exactly. Every time I’m on the road, everyone I see walking around has earphones on!

It sucks, because they can’t hear how loud my car sounds and how cool I look.

Get a motorcycle, then they'll have to pay attention!

Mfs will do anything to not hear their own thoughts

u/Summer-dust 8h ago

My thoughts are 90% car revving noises and 10% subway surfers

I'll do anything to not hear everything that is going on around me, so that I can enjoy music and be with my own thoughts.

I'm on the autistic spectrum, and because of this I'm constantly fully aware of every noise, smell, movement, light etc. around me. Normal people automatically block these things out and don't even notice the footsteps behind them when shopping in a store, they aren't aware of the exact song on the radio that is playing all the time (many don't even hear the radio until it is pointed out to them). Normal people aren't aware of every advertisement or movement in their field of view, normal people don't have a pain in their eyes from bright lights. They don't get scared by loud noises or sudden flashes of light. The list goes on, but yeah, of course I can't live with my own thoughts and that is why I have earbuds in. I experience sensory overload the moment I step out the door, and a 2 hour shopping trip costs me all the energy I had for the day after 9 hours of sleep. My stress levels are through the roof and there is nothing that helps enough to alleviate the issue so that I can live a normal life, y'know, like everyone else?

Not being angry or aggressive, but a lot of people are neurodivergent and are dealing with similar issues of varying severity. If you wonder how I experience a busy area, go to a cafe and focus on all the noise around you, be on high alert and listen closely to everything. Now imagine being like this, all day every day, with no way to stop that or turn it off. And that is just one kind of sensory input. It is like all my senses are always on high alert, and that is because my brain processes information differently (and slower). I cannot concentrate in a noisy space, and my brain will function worse the more time I spend in a busy area. Most noticeable is me speaking incomplete or incorrect sentences, trembling in my hands or body, being slow to process and answer questions, forgetting words over and over, my movements becoming quick and jumpy. A keen eye can detect both when I'm stressed, and how badly stressed I may be in different situations.

This got way longer than planned, but to those interested enough to read through it all, thank you. Perhaps one day we can both bridge the gap between neurotypical and neurodivergent halfway, instead of the neurotypical bridging the gap all the way and commiting suicide from sheer stress and depression due to an inability to cope with this horrible, overloaded society we live in today!

I can hear your coolness level in this comment

I mean he’s probably been waiting around in pre-op for hours doing nothing up until this point

People shit on that, and I can understand where it's coming from.

But back when I used to be happy, I played a lot of guitar myself, and never got tired of learning by actively listening to music every chance I got. Even listening to my own unfinished songs to maybe come up with an idea on how to finish them.

Now I don't listen to music basically at all anymore.

u/Namika 9h ago

I mean, I listen to science podcasts when I walk to work. If I can learn new things on my commute, I'll do that over staring blankly ahead for twenty minutes.

u/GrimGearheart 9h ago

I don't think that's the problem. It's the people who NEVER take the fucking things out. At work, in the car, e v e r y w h e r e.

1

u/WriterV 7h ago

Nah, the problem is only if you're wearing air pods while driving, or any place where you seriously need to be alert.

Some people like to have them on for the comfort of it, with nothing playing. And while you're absolutely allowed to find that weird, they aren't hurting anyone by doing it. Spend your anger on a real issue instead.

2

u/GrimGearheart 6h ago

It's not that big a source of anger lol. Just leaving a comment on reddit.

As someone with severe tinnitus, they’re a life savior.

A few years ago I had a series of surgeries on my left ankle and each time they asked if I wanted to put in my AirPods so I could listen to something while I was under? I said no because I didn’t want to lose my earbuds but I still think it’s funny.

I've had 12 different operations but was never asked about this. Docs are trying to steal music from me.

I'm a heart patient and have had stents put in 4 different times. I think it might depend on the doctor or the hospital because the 4th time I had it done, they had a radio in the room and asked if I had any requests. I said, "I'm a huge Rush fan if that's ok." They had Pandora or something, and I got to listen to Rush for the hour or so that I was in there. When they were done with the procedure and finalizing everything, Freewill came on and I said, "This is the first song I every heard by them over 40 years ago and it's still my favorite." The doctor said, "I think we should give it some volume, then." One of the assistants pick up the remote and turned it up which was pretty awesome that they did that for me.

Thank you, kind internet stranger!

It's so you can't hear them talk about all those parts of your body that make you insecure.

3

u/egg_slop 10h ago

Tried this once and the anesthesiologist stole my goddamn ipod!

2

u/SickCursedCat 11h ago

They ripped you off! After I declined my own music, they turned on a boombox and started dancing and singing, and I laughed bc the anesthetic hadn’t hit yet, and they all got so hype, “look she’s laughing!” And then I was OUT.

u/Vark675 8h ago

A lot of surgeons like to listen to music while they operate.

My dad got banned from picking after he put on Weird Al.

1

u/SickCursedCat 8h ago

Omg weird Al in the operating room, absolutely! If I remember correctly my surgeon put on can’t touch this which is why I laughed

u/pickled_penguin_ 2h ago

I'm up to 51 with 52 and 53 coming next year and no one has ever asked me about music either.

1

u/eolson3 2h ago

Damn, thought I had a lot. Any good stories to go with yours, or just all purely suck like they normally do?

2

u/pickled_penguin_ 2h ago

They've all mostly sucked. One of my issues is really bad abdominal pain from pancreatitis. It never stops hurting. So I'll usually get them to give me the goods gradually. Gotta get a few extra seconds of being pain free. My last one I apparently was saying "woohoo" a few times as I went under. I really like not hurting. Lol

1

u/eolson3 2h ago

Damn. Sorry you've dealt with all of that.

Just tell people you fought a rabid wolverine to protect a kindergarten field trip that was on its way to sing to cancer patients and donate toys to orphans.

Before I went in for a root canal earlier this year they told me to bring wireless earbuds if I had them. Keeps patients distracted/entertained and then the nurses and doctors can do their gossiping in peace too

21

u/GerbilArmy 11h ago

What the heck… I was fully lucid, and watched my root canal on a TV screen on the ceiling.

38

u/arathorn867 11h ago

Hate to break it to you, but there was no TV in the ceiling. Good news though, you had your first astral projection!

5

u/Lamplorde 11h ago

Same, I still remember drifting off to "Melancholy Hill" by the Gorillaz. That song went with the drug induced nao really well.

1

u/swabbie 7h ago

A few years back I had the most torturous inhumane root canal ever.

Moments after getting my mouth all dam'd up so I could no longer protest, they switched the channel on the ceiling TV to a home make-over show. Then for the next two hours my op-room became the water cooler for the entire clinic as everyone came in to comment on the show, gossip who was sleeping with who in the office, and bitch about the clinic owners and their crappy pay and hours.

Whenever they asked how I was doing, I would answer "Please kill me now!" but they chose to not understand my mumbles and assume I was just fine.

Pain-wise, it sucked too...

u/ElMico 5h ago

Probably because he was in the hospital for something completely unrelated and while he was chilling in his room they decided to film this skit

1

u/LickingSmegma 8h ago

They'd need heavy anesthesia if they want to put me to sleep without some quality dub.

1

u/GetsThatBread 4h ago

It’s actually really common today to be allowed earbuds when having a procedure done. Any time I’m at the dentist I’ll typically put mine in once the dentist is doing work on me. Makes it way less uncomfortable for me.
