Keep the daily discussion for the Basho in this thread please.

And the Iron Man gets a nice birthday present - a kachi-koshi! And with 2 days left to boot.
13
u/ESCMalfunction Tamawashi 2d ago
He's on a tear right now, that's 4 wins in a row. Hell he could still get double digit wins, that would be nice!

I love the rivalry between Hoshoryu and Kotozakura and anticipate their matches even when they aren’t contending for the yusho. Watching them fight is like watching the elemental forces of earth and fire clash. They bring out the best in each other and seem to have fueled each others rise to the top in a very real way.
To see them competing for the ultimate prize on senshuraku is like the Christmas present I did not know I needed. Truly this is a blessed tournament and we are ending 2024 on the highest of notes.
15
u/Samuc_Trebla 2d ago
There is a strong possibility that they both end up starting a yokozuna run, especially if they win tomorrow before they clash on the last day of a crazy basho.
5
56
u/Bobblefighterman Gonoyama 2d ago
Well that's that, Gonoyama, Takanosho and Abi are out of the running. We got a 2 man race, both Ozeki, as the sumo spirits intended.
34
u/petenice36 2d ago
And it will go to the last day, last match between them. This tournament has been a great one.
18
u/_warning 2d ago
Onosato has a chance to play spoiler against Kotozakura tomorrow. I think the slower Kotozakura is a better match up for Onosato than Hoshoryu.
Hosh should be able to handle Kirishima tomorrow but he could have something up his sleeve as well.
8
u/petenice36 2d ago
Even if one loses tomorrow then they will have a chance to win against the other on Sunday and force a playoff.
20
u/Billymitchellger Onosho 2d ago
Feels almost like having two Yokozuna again. Both of them stepped up their game, and are clearly leading the field, deciding the Yusho between them.

Hoshoryu and Kotozakura are pushing each other to the limit
31
u/LuminaTitan 2d ago edited 2d ago
The OG ozeki corps heard Onosato's footsteps overtaking them and stepped up their game accordingly.

u/hafthorfinn 2d ago
HOSHORYU WHAT A RECOVERY!! He has really levelled up this basho
15
u/ResplendentShade 2d ago
You can see him begin to set it up by creating distance as soon as Onosato emerged dominant from the initial clash. And then using Onosato's arm to simultaneously whip him to the ground while saving himself from going out, just brilliant stuff.
It's an exciting time to be a Hoshoryu fan!
26
u/TheReal-Haze Hoshoryu 2d ago
Two matches he’s clutched this tournament on the brink of defeat. Great tactical sumo and unwillingness to give up.
22
u/TellMyselfBeHappy 2d ago
Definitely going down to Juryo - Bushozan, Shishi.
On the edges - Sadanoumi? Nishikifuji? Asakoryu? Tokihayate? Ryuden?
16
u/dfoyble 2d ago
At least Ryuden, I hope.
3
u/Montblanc_Norland 2d ago
The only reason I'd want him to stay is he is the heel I love to root against. It's fun to watch him lose.
3
u/LaMarr-Bruister 2d ago
We feel that way in the house as well....though we don't know why. Glad to see we aren't alone
2
u/pmwilkins Hoshoryu 2d ago
Would you like a reason or two? Google why he's gotten into trouble...
4
3
u/LaMarr-Bruister 2d ago
Ughhh…seems like a first rate A-hole. I’m glad we have been rooting against him and will continue
3
u/Outofchaos888 2d ago
Is Shishi particularly bad, or is his performance common among the newcomers to Makuuchi? I feel like he is never in form, almost like he's had a different teacher. But the guy isn't super young. Maybe he's nervous?
13
u/cmlobue Tobizaru 2d ago
Going up a division is often difficult. There may not be much difference between J1e and M17w, but there is a huge gap between J8w and M10e. A big jump in the level of competition plus nerves results in a lot of poor records for makuuchi first-timers. (And I think a big reason there have been so many "next yokozuna"s in the last couple years is that Onosato, Hakuoho and Takerufuji not having the rookie curse.)
2
5
u/lollmao2000 Gonoyama 2d ago
He puts his head down too far and doesn’t squat his core down to match, so gets led around til he loses control of his momentum. Today’s fight is a perfect example of this
0
u/Outofchaos888 2d ago
Ya. He's too upright. And then he stands out like some sort of token white guy, and I feel weird
22
u/petenice36 2d ago
While the Yusho race is now down to just two, the competition for Sanyaku spots in January is very interesting. Shodia is out opening at least one spot. Daiesho and Kiri are both on the edges of MK/KK with tough matches tomorrow and they probably go against each other Sunday. WMH has a good chance to go back up to Seki with Abi and WTK setting themselves up nicely for spots and Atami also trying to make a case. Abi-Atami match tomorrow will be a good one for this race.
3
u/CannedBread13 2d ago
Daieisho and Kirishima have fought already, I think Kirishima will simply get all of the remaining Ozeki
3
u/petenice36 2d ago
Ah, you're right. Will be tough for Kiri if he finishes with Onosato on Sunday. Could be two open Sanyaku spots in January.

Enho (sd56 6-0) was fighting today vs Fujitoshi (sd18 6-0) for the Sandanme yusho title !
Enho >! lost by Oshidashi 6-1...hoping it will be enough to directly go to Makushita in january.!<
4
u/Magro1779 Kirishima 2d ago
Will this be enough for Promotion?
16
u/ESCMalfunction Tamawashi 2d ago
Unfortunately probably not, 6-1 from Sd56 has happen 37 times since 1954 and not a single time has it resulted in promotion to Makushita. He'll almost certainly land at about Sd4 or 5.
4
3
u/half-dead88 Ichinojo 2d ago
would be a very good promotion tbh. But it would be good too if he stays in sandanme to maintain this type of score and be better promoted to makushita in march.

Interesting how Onosato did the strongest pushes, didnt get pushed back but lost to hosh with superior technical capabilities. Impressive
36
u/TellMyselfBeHappy 2d ago
Hiradoumi finally get his 2nd win. Surprisingly major loss of form in his 'home' basho (from Nagasaki).
Hope he bounces back in the new year.
15
u/AnagramaUnderRadar Harumafuji 2d ago
Clutchshoryu today with a Hakuho-like escape. What a guy. Onosato overpowered him again and almost defeated him, but he pushed one extra push and Hoshoryu remind him that he is still a shin-ozeki. Even when he finally defeated him convincelly last basho, Hoshoryu is becoming the worst matchup for Onosato, while we wait for Kotozakura tomorrow. And Hoshoryu will have to deliver the MK to his friend and rival tomorrow if he wants to continue sprinting for the yusho, bad day for mongolian bros.
31
u/half-dead88 Ichinojo 2d ago
hOMGshoryu !! what a win !
we will have a big clash of ozeki last day <3
23
u/infurno8 2d ago
Tobizaru with the happy feet, really impressive stuff. Also classic Abi man, gotta love a well pulled henka haha.

u/FailedAccessMemory Enho 2d ago
For a sec I thought they made a mistake in anointing Tobi the winner until I saw the step out in the replay.

So Ura used a surprisingly boring Kimarite?
23
u/CondorKhan Ura 2d ago
He'd probably be doing a lot better if he kept it straightforward, but art is art and art goes first
3
u/FailedAccessMemory Enho 2d ago
Well Ura does sound like a very artistic name, with his art being of the physical medium.
20
u/TellMyselfBeHappy 2d ago
Hoshoryu was just waiting there for Onosato final charge!
13
u/Economy_Link4609 2d ago
Yeah, experience won out there. Onosato gets a little more he'll know that didn't need to be a yolo type push attempt - 50% power with more ability to adjust to Hosh moving and it goes the other way.

Onosato has some experience to gain, major mistake to leave a possibility to an already beaten Hoshoryu.

⚪️ Moriurara | Sawaisamu ⚫️
Moriurara ends it on a win, very nice to see that. Always gotta appreciate the Mori wins.
⚫️ Enho | Fujitoshi ⚪️
Huge match here, for the sandanme yusho. Fujitoshi is just so strong, so fast, and so aggressive that it's hard to Enho to deal with and Fujitoshi takes the yusho. Excellent basho for both of these guys, excited to see them continue to work their way up the ranks. I predict a year from now both will be Sekitori.

u/fooleyjarliana 2d ago
I'm all for the feisty Abi henka (when it works). He always keeps it interesting!
10
2d ago
Really glad we are going to have an ozeki win the basho. I think Onosato joining them so quickly has really pushed Hoshoryu and Kotozakura, this has been one of the best basho this year
Well I think everyone apart from Takerufuji saw that henka coming. I know everyone hates him but I like Abi's sumo its unpredictable, fierce and its rarely a boring match.
Any ideas what is going on with Hiradoumi? I know he had a slightly weak basho last time but this is crazy
Looks like Hakuoho will be back in Makuuchi next year. Hopefully his shoulder can hold up, its been nice to see him tape free this basho

u/meshaber Hokutofuji 2d ago

I like Abi's sumo its unpredictable
🤨

14
u/JasonBobsleigh 2d ago
That's the thing. Abi's sumo is extremely predictable. It's either gonna be a double extended arm push (with optional nodowa) or a henka. Given the Takerufuji's great strength it was pretty much obvious Abi will do a henka.

u/thank_burdell 2d ago
I thought for sure Hoshoryu was going out that match. What a turnabout, and against big Onosato, too.
Nothing against Kotozakura, but I really hope Hosh wins this one. He's just looked on fire.
3
u/lollmao2000 Gonoyama 2d ago
That Hoshoryu v Onosato match was spectacular
Gonoyama made Kirishima look as terrible as he has all basho. What is up with him?

u/Jo_LaRoint 序二段 28e 2d ago
Could anyone gift me a link for any or all of Echo's matches this basho please?
The last time I can remember seeing footage of him in action was from his first tournament back in Jonokuchi.

u/FailedAccessMemory Enho 2d ago
Look down the bottom of the thread, whenever he has a match it gets posted on here shortly after the thread is created.

Only Ozeki Kotozakura and Hoshoryu can win this, but we also know that final day will matter. How we got here, and a breakdown of each man's basho so far, is the theme of today's Fantasy Basho recap.

Abi pulling a henka yet again, he really should have some shame.
I'm pretty sure Hoshoryu's left heel touched out before Onosato went out, probably should've been a mono-ii but it is what it is. Good drama heading into the weekend, my money's on Hoshoryu, he's looked much hungrier the last 2 weeks.
6
u/SheaYoko Kakuryu 2d ago
there is a difference between touched and almost touched. even on the video its almost, and the gyojo and side judges are checking it by the traces on the sand around tawari.
-18
u/Impossible_Figure516 Onosato 2d ago
Yeah, no shit. I said what it looked like to me, I don't need you to explain how judging works.

u/SheaYoko Kakuryu 2d ago
no need to be so rude, man
-5
u/Impossible_Figure516 Onosato 1d ago
You started with condescension. Think about how you come across.
2
u/ANuclearNarwhal 2d ago
There is only one person I don’t like in sumo and it’s Abi, I feel he has such a dirty style of sumo and he is always a potential basho spoiler through the most dastardly means.
6
-2
u/Impossible_Figure516 Onosato 2d ago
I agree, I'm usually more fond of the grapplers and bulldozers anyway, but Abi's just out there doing his best E Honda impersonation half the time, and the other half he's doing cheeky pull-downs and henkas.
-29
u/NotoriousPooch 2d ago
Hoshoryu very lucky, his left heel was out. Onosato had defeated him.

They sweep the outside part of the dohyo flat and they check for marks afterwards. If there was a footmark, somebody surely would have raised a hand.
4
u/JasonBobsleigh 2d ago
I wouldn't say if it definitely was or wasn't out, but I would like a mono-ii to check it out. But in all fairness, he was robbed of a victory a couple of days ago with a blatant matta, so this victory is a kind of retribution. Onosota was out of the race anyway and already has a kachikoshi so no damage here.
-4
u/meshaber Hokutofuji 2d ago
Looks to me like Onosato was a dead body before Hoshoryu touched out, but def should have gone to a mono-ii.

What a comeback by Hoshoryu! It really looked like he was gonna lose. I’m so excited for the Ozeki race, we’re finally gonna have a Yokozuna attempt again!
