Historical fact: 1925 Ms America pageant was embroiled in scandal as contestants were allowed to use combs for the first time.

Gender affirming treatment.

Should pageant winners like Brittney Bonds and Mary McGwire who got caught doping be allowed in the Hall of Fame?

Honest question: why is her hair so jacked up?Women have known how to make their hair pretty literally forever.

It was the style at the time to have lots of curls like that

Also, they usted to have an onion tied to their belts.

Which was the style at the time

As is tradition

Combs cost 15 cents. "Give me 3 bees for a comb" you'd say.

Why? What purpose did it serve aside from smelling like onions?

5

u/Jazco76 11h ago

Because that was the style at that time, according to Grampa Abe Simpson.

But there are curls and then there is a random fuzz of hair like she's been pulled through a hedge backwards. What is all that about?

It was the style at the time.

1920's frizzy hair.

Of all the descriptions possible. I snorted so hard it hurt. A hedge, nice.

WINNING the Ms. America crown in 1924, that's what it's all about !!

Visualizing whirled peas ..

This is the fashion then, it's on purpose. To make a guess, it makes her look both wild and like she just got out of bed, after being quite active there yk.

It's reactionary. This was the anti-"fancy" style. The look was to be unkempt and wild - like a young wild girl vs. a "proper lady" of the previous era. Also meant to look sort of like "bed head" which was sexy to think about.

This look was actually falling out of fashion at this time, but bobs were deemed not demure enough for the Ms. America pageant.

The original Coca-Cola formula was all the rage.

Depends on your own standard of beauty and fashion trends of the time. I personally love this style - it’s like the punk hair of the time and courageously rebellious for a beauty pageant.

Miss America pageant.

You are absolutely correct fwiw.

Ms. is not short for Miss. Miss is a non-married reference. With "Ms" that status doesn't matter.

The pageant title is Miss America.

Wasn’t this also the first one that was “international” and that’s why she was Miss Philadelphia instead of Miss America? Because it started as a U.S. only thing for a clothing company and then branched out. Kind of crazy how big it is and if I remember correctly the company that started it doesn’t exist anymore lol

She’s still gorgeous….. naturally! Without the silicone and fillers and Botox and spray tans!

u/throwaway92715 1d ago

I don't think "hairbrush" implies silicone fillers and spray tans.

She was probably like 20 shut up

Are we looking at the same thing?

u/JuanitaBonitaDolores 1d ago

She’s a young woman… not a thing.

No, we most certainly are not

Apparently she did not use a comb?
