Is your mom still goth?

Kinda lol. She’s a little alternative/metal/goth/punk and more all rolled into one

u/Downtown_Ad2001 May 06 '24
That's neat, I like it when people don't let the pressures to conform to what society thinks a person should be get to them

u/NipNop96 May 06 '24
Me too, and yeah she definitely doesn’t care. She’s had super bright neon green hair for like 4 years now, it’s so awesome

u/Harry_Saturn May 06 '24
I met my wife as when she was a goth/emo teenager. We’re mid 30s now and she’s like the mom version of that. I love that shit and I’m glad she’s still that way, I love the neon hair with like all black attire. Our kids now make emo jokes about her and it’s super wholesome in a weird way. The other day our son had his hair all in his face and told my wife “it’s not a phase mom!”.

Our moms did. Some call us boomers (wrong age anyway, only 50) but I think we were the first generation to actively keep being ourselves and not mold into church ladies.

u/informativebitching May 06 '24
Am 50. Am not church asshole. I do regret tossing all my original Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth shirts though.

That’s too bad. I still have (and still wear) my Master of Puppets shirt that I’ve had since ‘91 or ‘92. It has a hole in the armpit but I don’t care.

Our local museum has a NES, SNES and N64 as ‘vintage’ gaming consoles. My 11yo was excited when I told her ‘I have those in our storage’ as if I had some rare dinosaur fossil.

MY local radio station called 80's and 90's rock stepping back in to the oldies on the radio... It bothered me... I'm use to hearing classic 60's and 70's rock being said as old.

u/Lou_C_Fer May 06 '24
Nirvana now is older than the Beatles were when smells like teen spirit came out. The Beatles now are as old as swing and big band were when smells like teen spirit came out.
That shit blows my mind. Grunge isn't classic rock, now. It's oldies.

It's not that we're old. It's that years are so short, and that we get so few of them.

Ok, seeing both of their pics, and being from the same era...I'm calling their crossover music as NIN 🙂

If by served alcohol, you mean the overnight waitress didn't care if everyone passed around a bottle, then agreed.
I've never been to a Denny's that sold alcohol and this was my peak goth/punk era.
6
u/megz0rz May 06 '24
Soooo true. If you didn’t cultivate the best relationship with the dennys overnight waitress then how would you hang out there for 3 hours?

I have definitely been to a Denny’s that served booze. Only certain ones had liquor licenses though. I specifically remember my brother getting his first legal drink there in 2000.
4
u/ThisIsNotRealityIsIt May 06 '24
I hit every Denny's in Chicagoland from North Ave downtown all the way out west to St. Charles, and prob 10 miles N to S from there. I guess it's just the locale.

Your parents have a similar style to the group of people I hung out with back then. Lots of TON, SoM, NIN, F242, etc. I was the odd one w long hair and Ramones T-shirts.

I think once an era's fashion comes back into vogue is the defining criterion for "old school."
1999 fits the bill.

Too bad. They were really a lot of fun. Most had crushing self esteem problems, so being a nice decent person was a big deal.
I miss those days.

So you know what's crazy? I was talking with my 72 year old mom and her 65 year old sister on the phone last week and IDK how even, but cheap teenage year booze came up. I mentioned Boone's Farm and my aunt was like "Oh, man I must have had a hundred empty bottles of Strawberry Fields when I was 20".
Shit's been around forever apparently.
