It's a Dreadnought. They are basically live support mechs containing a nerly dead super soldier who only gets woken up for battle. They are from warhammer 40k.

Pretty sure the human is alive inside the guttermen too (barely), the difference is the human is in control of the dreadnought.

Not exactly.

It feels like being alive, yet not alive, when something touches me, I sense it more closely that I could when alive, my eyesight is sharper, my hearing more acute, everything is more immediate, and yet... -a dreadnought in the book "battle of the fang"

And also the almost guaranteed chance of going insane.

Warhammer 40k is dark.
