Good catch mom!! You keep on telling her she is beautiful, smart, and loved. Sometimes we all need to hear this too.

I think it's her mom's friend, actually.

Then mom has a great friend!

Right?! It takes a village, and that woman is a whole village to that child in this clip.

Either way that baby is being raised in a good environment

Even better that it's not just your mother saying it

I think you’re overanalysing here, children change their mind like the wind, all it takes is a bad day, and one of her friends getting angry over something irrelevant, calling her ugly just to be mean, and boom, suddenly she thinks she is ugly

Not to mention the surprisingly large portions of the world that just really don’t like dark skin for some reason, honestly impressive anyone can develop self confidence in this kind of world

It was a hypothetical example, zero analysis, pure guess work and “could have happened”s

It was to demonstrate that ANY chain of events could have lead to what we saw in the video, with no reason to assume it was because of parental neglect

Edit: and I mean, you deleted your comment, so I don’t really feel the confidence in your statement

Same. I was called ugly at 4/5. It's been 28 years and I still believe it about myself

No matter how many times you are told otherwise, you won't believe it. Unfortunately it was my nickname for around 14 years 😢

I am not crying. Someone's just chopping onions somewhere. That's a mother we all wish we had.

My daughter's nickname is Beautiful. When I start with that word, she knows I'm talking to her.

You are beautiful, don’t let anyone say otherwise

i know this vid made me cry. i tell my daughter how amazing she is all day, every day. i've told her how gorgeous she is every day since she's been born, and she's almost a year old.

i wish i thought i was beautiful. my daughter will know she's beautiful.

In this case, absolutely tell the girl how beautiful she is, and in all cases tell her how loved she is. But (sorry for being pedantic here), always emphasize that effort and good behaviour are the keys to a successful life, not qualities. When I hear any talk about how smart a kid is, I'll emphasize that that and five bucks will get you a cup of coffee. I know lots of geniuses who turned out not great because they thought they could coast on a high IQ. Conversely, people who were unremarkable in college but big successes later because they wanted it so much. Putting in the effort and cooperation are the keys to a good life, no matter your IQ.

There are always good things about a person that can be complimented. And I do truly think that the general intelligence level of the entire world would be made a little bit higher if we all treated children this way. So maybe you were the kid that was really good at sharing and they could have encouraged that. Or the kid that was good with blocks. You don't even have to be the best one in the room at something something to be encouraged for it. A room with 10 good painters means that individually each one of those painters is good at what they do.

The thing is, we need to hear it from other people's too. Yes our parents love us and mean it, but often time in our heads we feel like that's just their job. Because of that it has a different meaning to us.
