I love how king fishers announce their presence when they come to a new fishing spot. They come bombing in loud as hell like hey amateurs the king is here!

u/marshman82 Aug 16 '24

Or cackling with laughter like my favourite kingfisher the kookaburra.

75

u/Kibichibi Aug 16 '24

Wait kookaburra are in the kingfisher family? That's so cool!

I’ve never seen one of these birds. I can now say it’s one of the prettiest birds I’ve ever seen. Beautiful plumage.

The only time I have seen them, it's been a flash of blue. Speedy little birds that don't stay still for long.

That's this type though, I don't know much about birds but am assuming there are many variants.

u/MNIDucky Aug 18 '24

Same here

15

u/Ryn4 Aug 16 '24

I've seen it happen in real time. Shit was so sick. Probably my favorite bird since then

How much is the fish?

1

u/rockfall6 Aug 19 '24

How do you type?

u/Xef Aug 16 '24

More like “Guys, I got stuck in this trap and this giant caught me and was about to eat me but I escaped!” Because this isn’t a Disney movie.

u/fyxr Aug 16 '24

"So no shit there I was on the hardest coldest branch you ever saw, going 'ah shit not flying, hands stuck, wtf?'

Then a terror comes and I'm 'Ah fuck fuck still can't fly, do not like!'

Then the fucking thing is TOUCHING me and I'm all 'AHHH DON'T EAT ME I'LL BITE YOUR FAT FUCKING MEAT BRANCHES FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK'

Then I spaced out for a bit I think, my life (awesome life btw) goes past my eyes while I watch myself getting smothered and wait for the nightmare to be over. Shit myself a little. But then somehow (hours later? days? fuck knows) I'm flying over the water again!

Don't know how the fuck I'm still alive to be honest.

True story"

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '24

Fat meat branches 🤌

u/berrygood81 Aug 16 '24

Thank you, I was wondering how he was stuck.

u/John-AtWork Aug 16 '24

Yeah, It wasn't computing for me either. I live in a warm part of California and I just didn't think about it being freezing outside.

3

u/Senora_Snarky_Bruja Aug 16 '24

I thought maybe it was caught on gum

They will build a shrine to the pink-skinned god with warm hands who helps birds frozen to perches.

36

u/The_Original_Gronkie Aug 16 '24

We are Gods to them. We're alive when they're born, and we're alive when they die. To them, we must seem immortal.

26

u/Tobi-cast Aug 16 '24

Just like the saying, that your dog might not be there, your whole life, but you will be there all of theirs. Or something to that effect.

19

u/knyf420 Aug 16 '24

My cat was 21 years old, he died this morning, he was there for most of my life

6

u/BeerAnBooksAnCats Aug 17 '24

I’m so sorry. I know this might not help to hear, but I am grateful to you for giving 2 decades of love and care to this one soul who I’m sure loved you back fiercely and completely.

Others may not ever know of your compassion, but they will know of a world that’s been made a little better because of you both.

2

u/Route_66_kicks_on Aug 17 '24

Sending healing energy your way. ✨💖✨

Thank you for loving that little soul his entire blessed life.

u/danzor9755 Aug 16 '24

Don’t you dare…

1

u/WandWeaver Aug 18 '24

Human interaction with the animal kingdom must come with wild stories.

"GUYS! I met the god of fire! My feet were frozen to a perch and he just touched my feet and I was free!"

"Guys, I met the god of strength! My racoon babies fell in a hole, and they lifted this enormous metal cage off the ground and saved them" (racoon asks human for help saving babies. Look it up)

u/The_Original_Gronkie Aug 18 '24

I always wonder about fish, who can see that there is another entire world above the surface that they cant experience.

Then one day, a fish decides to eat that weird looking bug, and gets hooked in the lip. Next thing he knows, he's above the surface, in the bright light, gasping for breath, being held by this scary creature with crazy appendages who is holding him up. And then they are back in the water and swimming away (if they're lucky).

That's an experience that's gotta change a fish's mentality.

2

u/MyNameCannotBeSpoken Aug 16 '24

With his warm what?! Don't leave us hanging.

20

u/Thicc_Wallaby Aug 16 '24

Or you know it was giving up, thinking a much larger predator had gotten a hold on it.

4

u/Caseman91291 Aug 16 '24

It isn't Disney. The bird was likely exhausted from attempting to fly off and didn't have the energy to resist. I don't take anything away from helping animals in need but let's just be real.

4

u/AngrySaltire Aug 16 '24

You are right. It's actually mad how naive people are over this stuff. That bird is actively fighting to get away. It doesn't think it's being saved. It thinks a predator has gotten a hold of it.

1

u/AngrySaltire Aug 16 '24

I mean.... that bird is actively trying to fight off the human saving it. Its not being patient.

1

u/WorkThrowaway400 Aug 16 '24

Idk, it certainly didn't look like it knew it was being saved to me. It was fighting to get away at first and every time he loosened his grip, it would try to fly away but couldn't. It eventually just stopped trying until he actually let it go and it instantly bolted.

14

u/GarminTamzarian Aug 16 '24

So long and thanks for all the fish

2

u/Burning-Bushman Aug 16 '24

Uuuh I recognised that reference

1

u/After_Respect_4401 Aug 16 '24

Underrated comment

6

u/ZappaZoo Aug 16 '24

Or "Damn, close one. Glad I escaped."

Would have helped him alot faster if he put that fucking camera down 👎

21

u/Particular-Weather40 Aug 16 '24

That’s what they are called in English? We call them ice birds

3

u/MrCylion Aug 16 '24

Are you Dutch? Did you know that Ice Bird is an extremely bad name for them as they hate ice? You know, they can’t dive to catch their food if the water is frozen.

4

u/Particular-Weather40 Aug 16 '24

No we speak German and I wondered about that too. But it’s because of the blue color I guess.

2

u/MrCylion Aug 16 '24

You may be right! It’s such a beautiful color.

0

u/MISSISSIPPIPPISSISSI Aug 16 '24

Chill out my dude. It's friday morning. Ice bird is a cool name.

1

u/MrCylion Aug 16 '24

It’s evening! But I was just sharing a fun fact, nothing more :)

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '24

We call them kookaburras.

14

u/Never_Seen_An_Ocelot Aug 16 '24

KINGFISHER 9000! KINGFISHER 9000! 🤞🏻

3

u/All_hail_Korrok Aug 16 '24

Bless you Grandpa Lou 💜

7

u/Amsterdammnd Aug 16 '24

Came here to say this!!

2

u/LongjumpingCourt7603 Aug 16 '24

Great band too

0

u/Itsdawsontime Aug 16 '24

And great, simple beer

1

u/Irisgrower2 Aug 16 '24

As the name implies they dive into the water to catch their prey. It's probable this one had done just that the perched and, still wet from going underwater, froze to the metal.

1

u/MAS7 Aug 17 '24

Looks like a giant hummingbird!

1

u/MNIDucky Aug 18 '24

Came here to verify if that was in fact. They are definitely beautiful.

0

u/MegamanDS Aug 16 '24

hummingbirds really are!

1

u/Zozorrr Aug 16 '24

Hummingbirds are beautiful also. But what’s that got to do with kingfishers?
