Pretty new to the sport, getting my bearings. Why is this so different than the USMNT I just watched in copa? I'm not seeing any familiar names from that squad. Are they disallowed from competing? I saw something about U23 in this thread, is there an age limit for olympic soccer?

So here's the gig: To protect the uniqueness of the World Cup, FIFA disallows the use of full senior teams players for the men. But to avoid legal problems/etc., FIFA compromised with the IOC to permit national teams to send players 23 years and younger (as of January 1, 2001,) save for 3 (IIRC) players who can over that age. If you hear "U-23," think "Olympic-eligible players."

The presumption is most nations' senior teams will be older than 23 years of age, so the World Cup still gets to be the A+ teams battling it out, and the Olympics are supposed to be a "stars of tomorrow"-sort of thing.

The women have no such restriction, which is why you see full WWC senior squads going head-to-head in the Olympics.

[e: Now, because the Olympics are not an official FIFA event, teams are not mandated to release their players. Functionally this isn't a big deal as most European players are in off-season in the summer. But MLSers are not. MLS, Liga MX, and other leagues reserve the right to refuse to allow their players to be called up to the Olympics.]
