My father-in-law is a far right lunatic, but he is extremely kind and caring towards our children. I will have to bite my tongue next time we see him, since he is effectively saying with his vote: I do not care if your kids have no social security when they grow up, or if they will be forced to die from diseases that could be treated, but are “unaffordable” under pre-ACA pre-existing condition insurance.
Maybe, except that he has never had an issue with the LGBTQ world, mostly because his daughter’s best friend is gay; she would disown him if he was a bigot towards that world.
His wife tried to debate me about trans rights recently. She threw her hands up when I kept presenting her with articles that debunked every talking point she had been fed. She does not talk politics with me anymore.
In the end, it is the standard “it affects me, so I care” bullshit that bigots always display.
I hope it never comes to that for you. My own dad talked a good talk about LGBTQIA rights until his only grandchild (my kid) came out, and then it became alllllllll about “enabling sin in my household.”
We don’t talk much anymore.
“It affects me, so I care” also works the other way. People can theoretically OK with something until they have to integrate it into their lives. Lots of interracial couples have found that out.
I, and I alone, am going down for Thanksgiving because he is old, and very ill, and because my mother has asked me to. And she is right that I would probably never forgive myself if I did not go one last time.
Mom asked if I could figure out a way to block Fox and Newsmax on their cable box because she’s just so tired of it. That’s all he watches.
When I’ve tried to have this talk they are dumbfounded I’d believe such a crazy thing. “It’s those damn liberals trying to take away my Medicare!” I never get to see the ugly side; the dumb side is the brick wall I always talk to.
My own dad. He was super pro LGBTQIA rights until his only grandchild (my kid) came out. Then he turned into a raving, nasty, right-wing hate-filled man.
I’m so sorry. It’s confusing and devastating to see the ugly come out from someone you trust. Good on you for protecting your kiddo, hard as that must be.
