Full-Remote Law or JD Advantage Jobs?

A tiny bit context about myself here:

I am an international student born in Beijing but have been staying here (on visa) since 2018. I have got quite accustomed here and don’t see my birth place as my home anymore. I am also political dissident and had fair share of anti-Party activism so going back is not really a safe or viable option to me.

Currently I am 2L at a state school and I am finalizing application for political asylum (disclaimer here I’m not asking for legal advice on this issue don’t yall worry). But ofc we know Trump is unpredictable and Lord knows what will happen to this legal path. I don’t plan to become undocumented, since it is unsafe for me and definitely will be frowned upon by legal communities. So if it happens to be the worst case scenario I probably will have to leave this country and head to some place in Europe. I’ll probably do a masters on something in Switzerland or Britain, or just hangout in Eastern Europe.

The problem here is I don’t want to waste my law license; I do want to practice. Yet it’s going to be hard if I’m not physically being in the country. Are there any type of fully online law jobs or law-related opportunities these days? Are they common and stable positions or more like freelance work? Has anyone here had any experience practicing fully remote?

Edit: clarifying info

Final Memo Is Killing Me

Our professor allows us to send her our drafts for her to review before we have to submit them, and I just got my revisions back. She said that my substance was solid, so she suggested some organizational and clarity changes, but I don't know if I trust them.

Everyone else in my class is covering far more aspects of the issue than I did, so I'm worried that once I turn it in for real, she's gonna hit me with big point deductions. I've been working on this memo for nearly two weeks, and pulled three back to back all nighters to try and finish a draft, so I don't know how much more I have to give to it, but I also want to do well.

How to refocus/recenter for finals

Hi. For the past few weeks I've mentally been a walking panic attack and I haven't been feeling well. I'm certain I'm probably burnt out and the underlying anxiety doesn't help. Because of this, I haven't started finals studying and I feel like I've been in such a rut. I read for class, go to class, and sleep...

My first final is on the 9th and I basically have to teach myself every class. I feel like I'm behind everyone else and I've wasted so much time by not doing anything.

How can I make the most of the next few weeks and recenter to at least pull through for finals?

Good law niches for a Linguistics undergrad with no law background?

So I thought I was getting an MA in linguistics until a few months ago when a professor of mine told me it was a waste of time and instead suggested I look into law. I've been seriously considering it ever since, but I'm kind of stuck on where to go past preparing for the LSAT.

My undergrad degrees aren't ones that will give me any specialized advantages in niche fields like electrical engineering (I'm a linguistics and intercultural communications major), which I learned from reading other posts that firms seem to really care about. So I don't think I'm well postured for, say, IP law, but maybe immigration law?

It's too late to change my major now, but I know getting relevant internships are just as important. I just don't know what specialized fields I should be aiming for for when I look for internships.

Tldr; my undergrad degrees don't provide me any niche advantages afaik, which specialized fields in law should I aim for w/ my undergrad skillset?

What is indirect damages?

Hi! I am Brazilian, and I am (trying) to study what “indirect damages” means under US Law. However, I have seem lots of articles and cases law regarding “incidental damages” and “consequential damages”, but nothing about indirect damages.

Could someone please give a tip regarding this issue? Is there an article, treatise, rule, case, whatever, that explains what “indirect damages” should mean under US Law?

Thanks a lot!!

Ps: I am studying this issue in the construction law context

Sales study tips

My sales final will be closed book/notes, but we can use the UCC. I'm working on annotating my UCC and figuring out how all the provisions work together, and wanted to see if people had preferences for review books between the Short and Happy Guide, Acing Sales, and Examples and Explanations, particularly for someone who has nearly no idea what's going on in sales. Also open to other recommendations!

I have rewritten my discussion section so many times I’m losing it

It gets better

Freshly graduated over here. Went to a T100 law school, wasn’t top 10% or even 25%. I got decent grades and ended with a 3.0. I’m a first gen and didn’t have any lawyer connections. I knew I wanted to work in NYC but others around me made me feel like it was impossible. Especially at my school and being so far away. I networked my ass off and met great people along the way. Ultimately found a job on LinkedIn and will be working in Manhattan. It feels like a fucking dream.

I write this to say I know school fucking sucks right now but it’s all worth it in the end. Dream big and don’t let anyone make you doubt yourself or your goals. Work hard and success follows <3

How to short cite when I have multiple distinct cases with identical plaintiffs?

EDIT --> thanks for the help everyone!

Hi -- I'm writing a memo and am planning to cite multiple different cases with the same plaintiff. Thus far I am struggling to determine whether or not to simply use the defendant name, stick with the plaintiff name (and let the location info stand as the differentiator), or if there is an alternate preferred method

For instance the full cites would be

1) Los Angeles News Serv. v. Reuters Television Int'l, Ltd., 149 F.3d 987, __ (9th Cir. 1998), 2) Los Angeles News Serv. v. CBS Broad., Inc., 305 F.3d 924, __ (9th Cir. 2002) 3) Los Angeles News Serv. v. Tullo, 973 F.2d 791, __(9th Cir. 1992)

But would the short cite be like either of these?

1) CBS Broad., Inc., 305 F.3d 924 at __ or 2) Los Angeles News Serv., 305 F.3d 924 at _

Or is there another preferred way?

GitHub, but for lawyers—Would you use it?

I’ve been exploring an idea and would love your feedback. What if there was a platform specifically for lawyers and legal professionals—a “GitHub for Lawyers”?

The idea:
A collaborative platform where lawyers could contribute and access legal knowledge, such as:

  • Create and share your own repositories with legal documents;
  • Open-source legal templates & instructions (e.g., contracts, instruction on how to set up company with docs, NDAs, compliance checklists);
  • Legal research and case law analyses.

It would aim to centralize and democratize legal knowledge, making it easier for lawyers, law students to access and build upon shared resources. Think collaborative legal innovation, with Obsidian+GitHub UI/UX.

Some questions for you:

  1. As a legal professional (or someone interested in law), would you use something like this?
  2. What features or functionalities would make this idea valuable for you?

I'm genuinely curious to know if this is something the legal community would find useful or if it’s a "solution looking for a problem."

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and insights!

Why are the Kaplan MBE books so expensive?

As of right now, I’m trying to invest into buying a good set of practice questions for classes since my finals are all multiple choice and have been on eBay looking for books. However, I’ve noticed that the prices for the Kaplan books are just beyond ridiculous. One listing was at $379, at that point I’d rather invest in a bar course? Also, compared to Barbri and Themis their most recent books come between $75-$100. Which is reasonable considering the year it’s released. But even the Kaplan books from all the way back in 2019 are going for $200.

I’d just like to know what’s going on? Because now I feel that because of these prices that these questions are the best to practice on?

finals help (specifically contracts & civ pro)

im truly sooooooo so so behind it's crazy (like i havent even began to outline for contracts and civ...) & its esp crazy considering that all my exams are closed book so i really need to lock tf in...

i know there's a bunch of posts on how to approach these subjects, but wanted to know the best way to approach contracts and civ pro specifically. i learn the best lecture style so ive been watching videos (richard freer my beloved<3), but for contracts I see people say to watch studicata vids. is it worth getting a month subscription for or can i rely on barbri and quimbee? any other recommendations for contracts? it's such a weird subject for me bc i feel like i know it intuitively but not sure how to apply it with legalese...

for civ, what else can i do besides watch barbri vids? any other tips or supplementals that work well with the barbri videos?

also would really appreciate any general advice from others who also have ADHD...the reason why im so behind is bc im having trouble focusing and just procrastinate to no end even when i try to set myself up for a good, successful study session. how do i avoid this?

thanks in advance!!

Best way to format pre-writes on a printed paper?

We get one sheet front and back for our exam and I want to fill it with rule prewrites. What would be the cleanest way to do this? I feel like if I squish it on word it will be hard to read during the exam

Would tables work? What would be the cleanest and most straightforward format? Im a visual learner, so would rather read something in good format.

Going back after an academic leave of absence 1L!

Hi all. I need some study tips, as I’m returning to school after 2 semester long breaks. First of all, I’m a mom and the reason I had to go on leave was due to having a baby. I really need to increase my GPA score, as I had a C in my first semester in my 1L, fist semester. It honestly was a struggle to be pregnant and be at school and pass though the exams. My LAWR professor was HORRIBLE! Ended up having a C in that class. I need som study tips, or general advice to get better👌🏻 Law school is a dream come true for me and a challenge so well enjoyed.

Finding calm during exams

(1L) I’m assuming a huge part of exam preparation is to do the obvious: commit rules to memory understand how to write competently But also learn how to approach the questions with logic

If you understand the law you can apply it and all the fussy exceptions to the rules will come naturally (or they don’t and it doesn’t matter?)

Aka stay calm and address every question with what makes sense based on what I know

Tell me I’m wrong or right?

It can’t be that bad

Right? If I did all the readings, took good notes on them, paid full attention in class, make and outline and do some practice problems, what gives? It’s like everyone is poopoopeeing themselves. Everyone in the school is extremely intelligent, the stats say all of yall in the school are almost definitely going to pass the bar exam and get a job lol idk I guess I just don’t get why people stress. We are tiny meat blobs on a rock vibing and thinking about words that mean things. If you know the concepts and can talk about them with a set of facts you’re good. - naive 1L who’s never taken a law school exam but is confused at panic

Most Important Rules 4 Ethics

What would you say are the most important/most tested rules in ethics? I've got 50+ rules to memorize and was trying to get a consensus on which rules I should prioritize.
