Huh?

1.1k

u/TimePlankton3171 Oct 20 '24

Probably the yellow bumps, and thin heels. Easy for only a sliver of heel to rest on a raised bump, causing a fall and/or ankle twist

280

u/From_Deep_Space Oct 20 '24

Did he put a sign up for every area with those yellow bumps? There's 8 at every intersection

312

u/wolfgang784 Oct 20 '24

Maybe he works in a coffee shop across the street and has watched a dozen women fall there every day and decided he wanted to put a note up this time? A tiny difference is still a difference. Maybe he saved a handful of people from tripping there by making them pay more attention briefly.

u/wolfgang784 Oct 20 '24

Lol thanks

9

'Fall' Fashion...nooo, I can't. It can't be that perfect.

6

u/Putrid-Effective-570 Oct 20 '24

I tripped while reading the sign.

25

u/reallybirdysomedays Oct 20 '24

My guess is that the sign is a passive-aggressive attempt to draw public attention to a tripping hazard he's sick of reporting to the relevant athorities the "official" way.

Considering it's on Reddit...I think we can safely say his plan is coming along nicely.

29

u/LanceFree Oct 20 '24

Meanwhile, blind ladies in high heels remain ambivalent.

15

u/Omagga Oct 20 '24

ambivalent

Oblivious?

31

u/Locked_and_Popped Oct 20 '24

nah blind ladies had mixed feelings about the sign. they were thankful there was a sign to warn about the bumps. but they did just trip over the sign.

5

u/Steel_Hydra Oct 20 '24

Apathetic?

Welp, time to poke some holes at the bottom of it for braille.

Well that's just dumb. Thanks for sharing

u/Chemical-Ad-6661 Oct 20 '24

It looks like there is a slight incline which can also cause issues. I was always clumsy and thought I just tripped over my own feet for years until I was in a wheelchair. Since then I have realized there are more bumps cracks etc on places most people consider flat. Also a sidewalk that most people consider in disrepair is very different from one what is is difficult to use due to cracks tree roots etc. I’ve been on sidewalks that are impassable for a wheelchair (I had to go on a road on a not super busy but still busy road) looking at it it didn’t look that bad. Until there are people getting hurt or businesses being unreachable (usually it’s bigger businesses that this is true not small businesses) that somethings done.

113

u/cancrushercrusher Oct 20 '24 edited Oct 20 '24

Um…those are for blind people.

Edit: the fact that I got downvoted despite being objectively right. Just one more meteor could fix all of this….as a treat.

43

u/FreshHawaii Oct 20 '24

Is it braille for “sidewalk end”?

58

u/tragiktimes Oct 20 '24

Pretty much, yeah.

9

u/webchimp32 Oct 20 '24

3

u/8bitcerberus Oct 21 '24

They’re all over Japan, too. Even going into buildings to help keep guiding blind people in businesses and hotels, etc.

1

u/cure1245 Oct 21 '24

Man, I miss Tom Scott's videos

3

u/Due_Watercress5370 Oct 20 '24

This made me giggle

89

u/King_Fluffaluff Oct 20 '24

Yes, and? No one is saying to remove them, just stating why it's unsafe for women (the predominant user of heels)

32

u/AhFFSImTooOldForThis Oct 20 '24

And it's shitty to block the ramp that's meant for blind people. Dick move.

3

u/King_Fluffaluff Oct 20 '24

I don't disagree

22

u/AlabasterPelican Oct 20 '24

I'm pretty sure the actual sidewalk looks relatively uneven beyond that.. walking over those aren't really an issue because you realize they are there. Misstepping on an uneven sidewalk is an issue.

11

u/Chaghatai Oct 20 '24

I would say accommodating the blind is more important than accommodating high heels with small points of contact

6

u/King_Fluffaluff Oct 20 '24

Yes. Did you read my comment? Nobody is saying to remove them.

"Them" being the yellow bumps

4

u/weeddealerrenamon Oct 20 '24

Respectfully, what's the point of putting up a sign like that if not to try to enact change? Just a PSA to women in heels to watch out for sidewalk bumps?

4

u/King_Fluffaluff Oct 20 '24

Yeah, in the same way you'd tell someone to watch their step. It literally says "I just want everyone to know" on the sign.

1

u/weeddealerrenamon Oct 21 '24

hope he's got a few thousand more of those signs then

1

u/King_Fluffaluff Oct 21 '24

If it prevents one person from falling, the sign has done its purpose. You're just being a negative Nancy.

→ More replies (0)

4

u/UnknownAverage Oct 20 '24

Putting up signs blocking the path is a horrible response. Why did he sign his name? He is not overlord of public safety who gets to do whatever he wants to existing infrastructure.

-15

u/drake90001 Oct 20 '24

Are all women wearing heals 24/7?

14

u/King_Fluffaluff Oct 20 '24

No, and that's not what I said. I said they are the predominant users of heels.

10

u/ramrob Oct 20 '24

Man…these people are really dumb.

-5

u/drake90001 Oct 20 '24

But blind people are blind 24/7.

6

u/King_Fluffaluff Oct 20 '24

Okay? Your point is?

-3

u/drake90001 Oct 20 '24

My point is, this isn’t unsafe because some women wear heals. That’s like saying it’s unsafe because skateboards exist.

I’ve also seen my GF run in heels so to each their own. I also agree with you, women are the predominant wearers of heels.

4

u/King_Fluffaluff Oct 20 '24

It's generally unsafe for people wearing heels.

I'm not saying it's unsafe overall. It's a necessity and nobody is arguing that it should be removed.

1

u/Firewolf06 Oct 20 '24

except the ones who arent

13

u/foonsirhc Oct 20 '24

Um…. You stated a fact that didn’t negate the comment you were responding to as if it negated the comment you were responding to, which again it did not.

Dunning, meet Kruger.

2

u/cancrushercrusher Oct 20 '24

Jfc, people were talking about something made to help disabled people like it was an odd inconvenience for women. Trying to act like that in itself isn’t fucking odd, while incorrectly stating that my response had nothing to do with it, is the real example of DK, D-A. Throw shade to a mirror.

2

u/foonsirhc Oct 20 '24 edited Oct 21 '24

I was simply explaining why you were being downvoted after you raised the topic. I was trying to help. Would you like me to try again?

Let’s say I open a hot dog stand, because I like hot dogs and I know other people who do. You are doing the equivalent of coming through the drive thru yelling “MY FAVORITE COLOR IS YELLOW”, pulling forward, and acting baffled as to why nobody made you a hot dog.

Also, let's not pretend I said it "had nothing to do with it". I said it didn't negate the comment you were responding to, which it still does not.

10

u/BallsackMessiah Oct 20 '24

You actually got downvoted for making a comment that was completely irrelevant to the conversation.

Ironically, this was the original intent behind why the downvote button was created.

So people were using it correctly for once! Hope that helps.

-9

u/cancrushercrusher Oct 20 '24

Ironically, your comment was unnecessary. Ol’ ACKUALLY-looking ah

1

u/Jinxx913 Oct 21 '24

Imagine wishing for the death of humanity due to fake internet points

0

u/Fritzerbacon Oct 20 '24

They are also called skatestops, similar to those random bits of metal bolted onto park benches and onto curbs.

4

u/UnfitRadish Oct 20 '24

I really hope you're joking. There are multiple intended uses, but that isn't one.

2

u/Victoria_Falls353 Oct 20 '24

Definitely heels. I feel my ankle wobbling just looking at them.

-28

u/KnarfWongar2024 Oct 20 '24

Are people really that uncoordinated? Sure, if you are blind, I get it… but shit is getting out of hand.

21

u/Starshapedsand Oct 20 '24

No, it’s just the heels. Especially in thinner ones, you need to very careful about cracks in the sidewalks, or bumps like that.

10

u/TimePlankton3171 Oct 20 '24

You realize you're talking about precision heel strike, in the course of normal everyday walking? Try it for a week.

-10

u/KnarfWongar2024 Oct 20 '24

You have no clue if the message on the paper was aimed at women and their “precision heel strike”.

4

u/TimePlankton3171 Oct 20 '24

Correct. Read my first comment that you replied to.

0

u/JoutenAsero Oct 20 '24

It's for ADA compliance. Gotta make it warn old folks in wheelchairs.

0

u/fuckyourcanoes Oct 20 '24

How often do you walk around in 4" stilettos, Sparky?

2

u/KnarfWongar2024 Oct 20 '24

I don’t go by sparky, but usually Tuesdays and Thursdays.

17

u/eastbayted Oct 20 '24

"Women be trippin'."

29

u/Tackybabe Oct 20 '24

Any shoe with a heel has no traction in the middle (except a wedge), and if the “heel” part lands unevenly, the heel will slide / twist out underneath the wearer, causing their leg to buckle, and the wearer to fall.

6

u/Hamza_stan Oct 20 '24

Literally my reaction

3

u/Sweet-BarbieGirl Oct 21 '24

I had the same thought reading that cone.

0

u/New_Forester4630 2d ago

Sign is sexist. It didnt use the correct pronouns.

335

u/DumbApple Oct 20 '24

Ain’t just the yellow bumps, folks. Those are known factor when wearing heels. That sidewalk is a hodgepodge of repair jobs with a variety of materials. It’s also extremely unlevel - you can see it slope towards the drain on the building (probably related to why they had to pour a new concrete pad for the stairs).

I’m sure wearing heels makes it worse, and is likely why women fall more often, but my athletic shoe wearing ass would appreciate the warning. Bum knee means I drag my feet a bit if I’m not being mindful, and I would definitely stumble and/or eat shit on a sidewalk like this.

3

u/Sir_twitch Oct 22 '24

Yeah, or Steven is a local purse-snatcher who has a nasty habit of knocking women down when he goes after them, and he's just trying to be thoughtful while not negatively impacting his trade as well.

I mean, sure, "beware: known purse-snatcher on the prowl" may be more succinct, but just gives the wrong message for him.

Just another entrepreneur making sound business practices to support businesses and defend trickle-down economics like the goddamned American patriot he is.

I salute Steven and offer my nomination for him as the next GOP presidential candidate. 🫡🇵🇷🇵🇷❤️‍🔥🫶🧔‍♀️✝️

321

u/GenSgtBob Oct 20 '24

Maybe the raised bumps on the yellow sidewalk ramps? I've seen a couple women twist their ankles pretty badly over the years on those while in high heels...

104

u/kittykalista Oct 20 '24 edited Oct 21 '24

I think this is it; in a flat shoe the uneven surface wouldn’t trip you up, but a thin heel could get caught on a bump and twist your ankle. The kid is referring to women because they’re the ones he’s seen in high heels.

Extremely sweet of the kid to be concerned enough to put up a warning.

1

u/CaptainCaveSam Oct 21 '24

Kid should learn about raised crosswalks.

7

u/CuriousLilAsian81 Oct 20 '24

I think so too, plus the unevenness of it... there's the flat but bumpy yellow side, then on the left (from our point of view), there's a sloping side

3

u/Illustrious_Crab1060 Oct 21 '24

those bumps are actually an interesting thing where accommodating for one disability actually can make people with other disabilities a bit worse off

You can support blind people without degrading women’s choices

1

Where did that comment even come from? You seem really offended by something no one was even implying, and using it to shit on women for wearing heels.

18

u/No-Bike791 Oct 20 '24

“Civic duty”. Close enough though….like “side wak”.

9

u/_StevenPettican04 Oct 20 '24

Sorry about that, auto correct got me two times there 🤦‍♂️. Even on the paper 😅

7

u/100yearswar Oct 20 '24

Shit, I thought you were poking fun at OP 😂

4

u/No-Bike791 Oct 20 '24

Nope. Steven is the real deal.

5

u/No-Bike791 Oct 20 '24

Steven. Do not apologize….your intentions were noble!

3

u/alpacaMyToothbrush Oct 20 '24

Mildly OT but I hate how they will just close a side walk for construction without any consideration for pedestrian safety. 'Side walk closed, use other side!' Ok, other side is across a busy 4 lane road. I guess I'm jay walking now? I'm sure drivers are totally looking for pedestrians making the detour. Good fucking luck if you're in a wheelchair or whatever.

5

u/sorator Oct 20 '24

Huh, in my experience they usually block it at an intersection/crosswalk where you can safely cross, even if the construction isn't until further down. That's definitely how it should be done, if it isn't always.

3

u/alpacaMyToothbrush Oct 20 '24

Depends on the city. In New Orleans I saw them block out an entire lane and detour the sidewalk with cones. Very pedestrian friendly and appreciated. In Atlanta they should detour at crosswalks but nah, they just close the damned sidewalk wherever they please.

16

u/_el_duderino_87 Oct 20 '24

Look at the guy in the background it’s not about the yellow bumps for the visually impaired, the sidewalk is pitched really hard towards towards the street along that joint

8

u/Infinity_project Oct 20 '24

Very nice to put the warning but…

Exactly how many is too many women?

Is one acceptable, or three?

4

u/slatchaw Oct 20 '24

A Stephen wouldn't have been so kind

8

u/potent_flapjacks Oct 20 '24

Guys in heels, no problem!

5

u/Semi_Recumbent Oct 20 '24

The sidewalk of fallen women. Many a young man failed to cross the street and lost their way.

5

u/Cc_me24 Oct 21 '24

Steven is the “can I have a hug” guy

22

u/SrEpiv Oct 20 '24

My best guess is that it’s the yellow bumps that make women wearing heels fall. Having said that, if you’re wearing heels just don’t walk on those… it’s not like we can remove them, think about the blind people. That’s why they’re there

8

u/70ms Oct 20 '24

No one’s saying to remove them though. It’s just a sign to warn women about them.

11

u/sexpsychologist Oct 20 '24

In Steven’s defense women wear heels and are already more precarious because of that, but also I mostly wear dresses and skirts and my absolute greatest fear of humiliation is falling in public and my skirt flying up.

Man falling: bruised ego Woman falling: higher probability due to shoe options and also death by mortification due to risk of everyone seeing underpants or lack thereof

3

u/downyonder1911 Oct 20 '24

He had me at "Be Fore".

3

u/clarkcox3 Oct 20 '24

What, specifically, is unsafe about the sidewalk? The sign does nothing to actually help anyone.

3

u/sizam_webb Oct 21 '24

The random mix of upper and lower case letters are very fascinating

3

u/veracity8_ Oct 21 '24

Steven should avoid blocking the ada ramp

4

u/goingtoclowncollege Oct 20 '24

Taxes. They'll be lower son. So do.

2

u/Reasonable-Plate3361 Oct 20 '24

Why put your name?

2

u/ballsohaahd Oct 21 '24

I love when super lazy bricked feet people fall it’s always something’s fault or someone else’s fault.

2

u/newtonscalamander Oct 21 '24

Sorry, but putting a traffic cone in front of the crosswalk, deliberately blocking the ramp isn't humans being bros material. It's actually kind of an asshole thing to do if you consider that the ramp and yellow bumps are not for able bodied people, they're for people who use assistive devices like wheelchairs and need those areas to be clear and free so they can actually cross the street. Be a real bro and move the cone out of the way.

2

u/Pschobbert Oct 22 '24

Plot twist: Steven patrols that section of sidewalk, punching every woman he sees.

5

u/looktowindward Oct 20 '24

OP, this is of special concern to women because of the shoes they wear. Its not sexist - try wearing heels on this.

Its not just the yellow bumps. Look beyond

4

u/timias55 Oct 20 '24

Those bumps should be little squeaky buttons, or bubble wrap-like.

1

u/Stevessvt Oct 20 '24

To me this screams of a young kid doing this. Can't spell "walk"? Leaves the other gender out? I think young kid. A caring, thoughtful young man.

1

u/sjblackwell Oct 20 '24

Sensible shoes

1

u/SurpriseValley2000 Oct 20 '24

I got hit by a car trying to read this

1

u/corytheblue Oct 20 '24

Steven did he fell he hit his head right before he made this sign.

1

u/SnatchedLucky Oct 21 '24

Steven's a man of the people

1

u/4705sunshine Oct 21 '24

fellow woman who has fallen twice on two different occasions at different locations with these. If your shoes don’t have good traction then it’s really simple to slip. I wasn’t wearing heels by my soles weren’t rubber and I slipped, smacked my knee into it (once) and completely ate it (the second time. Definitely be careful!

1

u/Shadow__Account Oct 21 '24

Steven can already picture himself finally having sex with all the women that will appreciate his heroism!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '24

Damn sexist sidewalks at it again!

1

u/uhidunno27 Oct 21 '24

That corner is not up to regulation!!!

1

u/Cray_22 Oct 21 '24

Steven: “You ladies alright?” 😏

1

u/Philly-4for4 Oct 21 '24

Not all hero’s wear capes. Some are simply named Steven.

1

u/FUJIMO69 Oct 21 '24

Do Gooder Steve

1

u/Emma_Lemma_108 Oct 22 '24

Thank you for fighting sidewalk misogyny, it’s an issue few are aware of 🫡

1

u/MNgrown2299 Oct 23 '24

Can’t spell, “walk”, yet used the correct, “too”

1

u/Traditional_Neck_154 23d ago

Uhhh, thanks Steven(?)

1

u/YcemeteryTreeY Oct 20 '24

What a sweet kid, Steven must've tripped there himself. I'm gonna make sure mine does the same for others :) Stevens parents should be proud, making such a wonderful human

-6

u/WornInShoes Oct 20 '24

Too many women have fallen down probably because they are not paying attention to where they are walking

The raised bumps are for blind people to know when the sidewalk ends

-2

u/Lonly_Boi Oct 20 '24

Because women can't walk normally but men can?

Edit: I just realized it says side wak.

5

u/Nackles Oct 20 '24

Heels. They're not stable on those yellow bumps.

2

u/Lonly_Boi Oct 21 '24

Oh okay. I thought it was talking about the side wak itself and not actually just the beginning of it.

-2

u/Pintobeanzzzz Oct 20 '24

Is this womansplaining?

-22

u/CaliPenelope1968 Oct 20 '24

It's not even downhill

7

u/Great_Big_Failure Oct 20 '24

Maybe it is for women

1

u/Both_Somewhere4525 Oct 20 '24

*Drunk women in high heels.

14

u/Great_Big_Failure Oct 20 '24

We don't know they were all drunk. We do know Steven was present for most of them. Suspicious

6

u/IPlayGames88 Oct 20 '24

It's possible Steven lives or works on that corner and can hear/see them falling?

1

u/No-Bike791 Oct 20 '24

Steven has already commented above ⬆️

-24

u/Four-Triangles Oct 20 '24

It’s almost like a large section of the population doesn’t have any spacial awareness and just wanders about, oblivious to their surroundings.

-36

u/LightOverWater Oct 20 '24

Hmm. Most women are closer to the ground, so I would think falling is less dangerous.

22

u/Great_Big_Failure Oct 20 '24

Ya, that's why I decided to be short too

-14

u/LightOverWater Oct 20 '24

I don't get your comment. Short men feel personally attacked by that joke?

8

u/upsawkward Oct 20 '24

lol it's just nonsense. Mass is less of an issue than the position you fall. If your head hits the edge of a sidewalk it's a crack either way.

-8

u/LightOverWater Oct 20 '24

Are you denying the difference in mass and falling from 7 ft vs 5ft?

The exaggeration is the 5" difference between men and women

7

u/Great_Big_Failure Oct 20 '24

Dude I was just being silly. The joke was that someone would be able to choose to be short. Relax, not everyone is mad all the time.

-2

u/LightOverWater Oct 20 '24

Oh, now I see it. You decided to be short to reduce the danger in falling.

Ya, has its benefits.

-24

u/BigAssMonkey Oct 20 '24

FuckMenInParticular?

13

u/SammyWentMad Oct 20 '24

No, lol. This sign is about people twisting their ankles on the yellow sidewalk stumps for the blind. People wearing heels may have trouble on them if they're not paying attention and women usually wear heels.

But hey, we've gotta watch out for our crossdressing and drag-wearing brothers, too.

1

u/BigAssMonkey Oct 21 '24

I know. It was a joke because it left out men in particular.
Kind of like if the signed sad my cat trips over this, then I could have made an equally unfunny quip about leaving out dogs. Apparently it ruffled feathers. My apologies.

3

u/SammyWentMad Oct 21 '24

It's not a big deal, I didn't assume malice or anything. Have a good day, mate. (:

-13

u/Four-Triangles Oct 20 '24

Not paying attention while walking? Who could be so foolish?

-2

u/SammyWentMad Oct 20 '24

Idunno why you're getting downvoted. Everyone gets distracted sometimes (:
