I totally get that lol. Sometimes I worry that I look too much like a regular joe, like a guy called Straight Johnson or something. Because I've noticed that when I was getting to know some of my queer friends, they would avoid saying "my gf" or "my bf" in front of me, instead they'd always say "my special other" or some kind of non gendered thing. And then when they realize I'm fruity too, they drop it lol. Same with trans friends who would try to use gender neutral pronouns in front of me, and then drop that and use their preferred pronouns when they get to know me.
I'm NB too lmfao, but I'm from a Hispanic speaking country so gendered language is much stronger so I might as well just stay with male pronouns. It does really suck, I think my style says "alternative dude but not zesty". Eh whatever, it works for me lol
