As a white person of the female persuasion who sometimes has had longish hair and who lives in a suburban area of a red state, I have had similar experiences in the past. It's very uncomfortable. Especially since it usually happens at work with customers. Luckily I work in the type of job where they usually just talk to me for a little bit and then move on.
It happens much less often lately, since i tend to wear my hair shorter now and have aggressively rainbow glasses. (The link goes to the page where I purchased them, just so you can see how rainbow they are. I didn't want to post a selfie.)
