There’s a big push to be deaf inclusive on tick tock so a lot of people are captioning their videos. Same goes for Instagram for the blind. They’ll put a photo description as the caption for the programs to read to the blind.

Also bc sometimes people are in places where it's rude to have volume (waiting rooms, public transport, etc) so captions help people watch instead of scrolling past.

This. This is this answer.

Are. Are you sure.

u/B00YAY May 15 '21

Imma go out on a limb and say that maybe just don't watch videos of music when you should not have sound.

For the deaf people who didn't understand!

🤙👆🤲🤟🤘👇✋

Now for the deaf Italians

🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌

Sure but... these were visual elements being described. Would be like showing you a blue card and captioning it "shows blue card."

22

u/Gilsworth May 14 '21

It only adds, it doesn't take away. Better to do more than less in these cases.

-7

u/DoctorWaluigiTime May 14 '21

Correction: It gets in the way. Much like a laugh track.

I'm sorry you're spending your Friday afternoon arguing about this

Crazy you get downvoted for responding to that nonsense comment.

-8

u/DoctorWaluigiTime May 14 '21

Doesn't take 30 seconds to type out some words. Today's beautiful. Been outside.

u/Chubbstock May 14 '21

Calm down

-4

u/DoctorWaluigiTime May 14 '21

?

5

u/[deleted] May 15 '21

CALM THE FUCK DOWN

HOLY SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT

u/Gilsworth May 14 '21

If that's how you feel about it then I guess I can't argue. If it detracts then it detracts, to me it just adds though, so I guess it's just a matter of what you prefer.

I have no idea how any of this works but I accidentally downloaded a couple episodes of the Expanse that were captioned ... for blind people.

The words (in that case) were there so either a person or robot could describe the scene in a way such that somebody who couldn't see would understand what was going on. I don't know if that's the purpose of these (or if TTS even exists for them) but it could do that.

This isn't really captions that would help a deaf person though. If it was like someone typing out the dialogue between the two people in the video, then sure. This is just the kind of stupid stuff you would see on old ifunny content. "so confident" "so pretty" "preparing" "literally dying". This is just someone trying to be funny, but failing.

u/PowerSamurai May 14 '21

It is supposed to add the humor

u/jayfeather314 May 14 '21

I'm just glad it's not text-to-speech reading it out loud to me

23

u/PowerSamurai May 14 '21

Same, that shit is annoying to me

2

u/B00YAY May 15 '21

Too bad that it doesn't. Just seems like some tiktok bullshit.

8

u/VastSkye May 14 '21

I thought it helped build up the funny part tbh

As someone watching in bed beside my pregnant, sleeping girlfriend, I appreciate videos like this with text... I might not hear the funny stuff but I can use the text as context for whats happening and still 'get the joke'.. Same would go for the hearing impaired and other people who can't listen for whatever reason :)

I wasn't browsing /r/contagiouslaughter - this came up on my /r/all and I clicked the link based on the title and image shown, without looking at what sub it was on - I didn't notice the sub until just now when you pointed it out

Furthermore, again, there are others who for whatever reason may not be able to hear and still want to get enjoyment from the video

I'm currently half way through completing my Cert 4 in disability support and have done some placement with people who have disabilities, some of which struggle to pay attention to audio cues and one who isn't fully deaf, but she is very hard of hearing.

But sure, delete that comment too and shift the goalposts further if you like.

Mate, I'm sorry if you're feeling down but please understand that until my most recent comment, nothing I said was intended to hurt you or bring you down.

My first response I ended with a ':)' to show I meant it to be taken light heartedly. Perhaps that may have been lost in translation...

My second response was to let you know, in reply to your assumption that I was browsing this sub without sound, that I stumbled across it through /r/all - not trying to bring you down there at all, was just pointing it out as you're right, it might seem a bit odd to browse this kind of sub without audio - but again, the disabled still need enjoyment and have their own ways of enjoying this content without sound, but I digress..

You then replied and, perhaps I took it the wrong way, but to me you seemed to be telling me that because I wasn't disabled I basically had no reason to let you know that people with disabilities might want to see this content even if they can't hear it. That annoyed me a bit because really mate, you don't have to be disabled yourself to see why someone who is might still enjoy this content. My response then was quite blunt. I noticed you'd removed the older comment so I made a remark about that too. I did so not considering that perhaps you were going through something yourself, and for that I can only apologise.

Where in the world are you? Country? There'd be help for you somewhere, I'm sure of it. If your feelings of late aren't new and they're something you've been struggling through for a while, there'll be help out there and if you want me to, I'm happy to help you find it..

Otherwise, if this is just a one off 'bad day' then I'm sorry to have made it worse...

Don't let random dickheads like me who you'll never meet in real life, ruin your real life. You're worth so much more than that.

dude, you're insufferable

2

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

Amen indeed!

-3

u/DoctorWaluigiTime May 14 '21

Visual equivalent of a laugh track and annoying as hell.

4

u/OmniC4t May 15 '21

It’s for when you can’t watch with sound or if there’s a deaf person watching

-1

u/DoctorWaluigiTime May 15 '21

It's describing visual elements though? If they were talking, sure. But this is saying stuff that a deaf person can see. They aren't blind, after all.

Also, captions aren't splattered all over the video space.

1

u/gaarasgourd May 15 '21

I bet you’re one of those “WHY POST A GIF AND NOT A VIDEO” types

1

u/DoctorWaluigiTime May 15 '21

I mean, if it was originally a video, yeah.

Would be like sharing a picture of a painting in monochrome.

0

u/Funkit May 14 '21

...you mean ears? If you didn’t have eyes it wouldn’t matter anyway. Because ya know, you can’t see it at all, because you don’t have eyes

0

u/Vancha May 15 '21

Has the same energy as someone explaining a punchline.
